Alaska fish and game has decided that we need to kill 70 brownies this spring in the unit I live in, they also decided to let us take them off of black bear bait stations, what a chance to get real close!!!!
What and opportuninty!
Good luck. I cant wait to see pics this spring!
wow. you need a long, lost cousin Luigi from Wyoming to come take one as well?
lucky dog!!
Yessir, that would be an AWESOME hunt, for sure! Makes me wish I had the trade bait you mentioned in your PM!
I hope you get a crack at one of those bruisers!
Bisch
Don't know about you, but sitting in a tree watching a brownie at the barrel would be a WHOLE LOT different than a blackie. Post pics when you do it!
ive been watching them take over baits every year, some times you cant get out of the tree for a while, but this year we can kill em
there is also still chances at blackies
"some times you cant get out of the tree for a while"...Kinda makes me glad I live in Texas. Best of luck to ya. Just don't become scat.
I heard on KDLL today that the Kenai Wildlife Refuge is not participating in the bear or predator hunting of any type including lynx. The Feds want a healthy bear and predator population. The state wants a healthy moose population that is low on the peninsula for reasons far more complicated than bear numbers.
If not mistaken I also believe there is a salvage requirement on the carcass. A brown bear carcass is bait for another brown bear and could get an unexpecting person in a world of trouble. Called a cache...and ranks right up there with getting between a sow and cubs.
~CB
That prob the only way I would hunt brown bear with a bow. That be awesome to get on video. Wink wink!!
you are right about the refuge but the state land is still fair and possibly national forest, salvaging the meat is a must, get it done quick, probably cant just drag it out whole, but you do have the right to defend yourself and property,
I hadn't read about the lynx yet, that seems strange as lynx traping on the refuge starts jan 1
been thinking about doin it from the ground, ive done it before with brownies on the bait, I usualy make a blind with a chainsaw and heavy wood
almost like a cabin
Good luck to you, hope you get a big one.
I wouldn't think of going, I don't hunt things that hunt me back!!!!
Outstanding! That is a great opportunity. I had a couple instances, when I lived up there outside of Fairbanks, where a Griz would come in on a Black Bear bait. Increases the pucker factor, considerably! i would imagine it would increase again with a Brownie, especially a 10-12 footer!
Good Luck, Hope ya get a good one!
Man and u have some monsters !!!!! Need a camera man?
I will be cook camera man bow carrier arrow retriever just tell me what to do.
That is awesome.
Man what I wouldnt give. Good luck!
more than a camera man some one to watch through some open sights
had this one in range a while back (http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg211/jrchambers/1476306_10201878648980933_1601920639_n.jpg) (http://s249.photobucket.com/user/jrchambers/media/1476306_10201878648980933_1601920639_n.jpg.html)

Hey Jason, sounds nice, just some friendly advice.....last year I spent nearly 20 hours up a tree when our pit around Glenallen was taken over by a mama with cubs brownie. Stupid sow acted like she owned it or something,,,,of all the nerve!! Anyhow they will act very different than the blacks, but you probably already know that. Wish the unit I'm in would adopt such a plan, I'm jealous. Do they want you to go through the special orientation for browns like they did in Fbx??
Upside to hunting brownies out of a tree is that they don't climb well. But get one mad and he might try to shake you out of one!!!!!!!!! :scared:
Wow! Happy hunting.
bill there is no orientation as the rules state you can kill brown bears over black bear bait stations, so they are incidental harvests.
I don't go to a bait around here not prepared to spend the night, I also set up where I don't have to go past the bait site to enter the stand or blind, and I leave myself ten of fifteen mins of good daylight to get out and see down the peep sights

Ok...now you're making some sense! :D
That sounds pretty neat. I look forward to your updates. It seems to me 70 bears will be taken pretty quick, especiaslly if they havent been hunted before.
Do they close the season once the quota has been met?
Had four brownies within 25 yards when I hunted them several years ago. No shots taken but the most adrenaline filled hunt I have ever been on. Guide had a borrowed shotgun and didn't carry a round in the chamber because he had trouble with the safety.Only added to the excitement.
Jason, good luck, take lots of pictures, and be sure to share them here.
Hi Jack how you been doing? I haven't seen you around here much lately.
I am headed back for AK Brownies this spring. However, I'm not as smart as Jason, my hunt will be spot & stalk with my selfbow Pigger.
Charlie,
They are actually very very keen animals to hunt and many are wounded and lost to poor shooting. Of course adding a bait station changes that equation considerably, but there are issues with that too. You can't shoot a sow with cubs so you could be there a while.
2013 there was a quota of 70 brownies and I think they came in somewhere in the mid 60's on harvest numbers. 2014 will bring another 70 bears. This is a highly contentious issue up here and there are several schools of thought. Personally, I have hunted my entire life and cannot fathom the idea of killing a brownie for a rug, skull and claws, but have plenty of friends and family who have.
Here is a pretty good article from our local paper. Alaska Dispatch on Peninsula Brown Bear hunting (http://www.alaskadispatch.com/article/20131019/some-70-kenai-peninsula-bears-may-die-winter-snows-fly)
Hi Walt, slowing down. Bought a rest home in northern Michigan for aging bowhunters. So far I'm the only occupant.
Good luck to you and Jason this spring!
Amazing hunting prospect and on my bucket list. Good luck! I actually just sold a Marlin 45-70, you could prolly have used it! LOL
ive chased them many times with my bow spot and stalk to no avail, sure baiting is a whole other monster, the most tense situations with brownies ive been in were at baits or caches. they have something to defend and loose.
chomebuck ever eat on a spring brownie? tastes just like a blackie, still not that good, but I think pep sticks or sausage.
Sounds like a dream hunt that's for sure.
Now I don't blame a person for having a back-up firearm. I will admit though that when I read Glen St. Charles' book his point about carrying such back-up on a bowhunt changed the character of the hunt. Made me stop and think about what I'd do if I had to choose back-up or not on dangerous game.
Of course I realize a Brown Bear hunt gone wrong for a bowhunter could change a lot more than the hunter's character without a "Plan B"!
I think I have enough of that kind of character, no more wanted haha.....
I've brought home brown bear meat from spring hunts and it is as good a moose, not quite as tender but it is a little bit more sweet,(as meats go). Good stuff. I will pass on fall brownie meat tho.
For your broadhead, consider a single bevel A Bowyer 2 blade. I've only used them once ( on hogs ) but I like them. Woodsmans are my usual BH of choice other wise. Plenty of pass throughs and lots of blood trail.
Looking forward to hearing about your hunt. I will be hunting Point of Sand Point in May (for brownies).
W O W ! What an opportunity! Good luck. I can't wait to read the thread on that one. That's ample opportunity to become VERY proficient with your digital camera/video equipment, that you then post a very pic heavy said thread!!!!!
Tim
I don't agree with fish and game on that decision but nonetheless good luck with the hunts!
QuoteOriginally posted by jrchambers:

I can do that as well.
as for myself I agree with adfg in their decision in the last five years I have been seeing bears in our subdivision a lot, there are areas that you can always count on seeing bears, for example around skilak lake where hundreds of thousands of fish spawn. fish and game are not trying to eradicate, they just want to nock them down 20%, I think hunting them over bait increases the boar to sows killed, as that is all I will be shooting
I think hunting over a bait makes it a bit more dangerous for you. . coming and going. As was brought up, a brownie may be protective of the bait area. Otherwise... good luck.
ChuckC
I have this picture matted and framed in my shop, but it seems particularly appropriate to this thread, minus the bait station stuff. Mods might delete, but it is in my oppinion specific to traditional bowhunting just with an Alaskan flare.

ditto Mickeys comments! I can run down after work, have 3 and 4 days off a week. holler if Mickey chickens out :D !
Dan
I live right in the midst of all these brownies. They are out of control in this area and desperately need this thinning. We will be hunting bears in a one year time period that should have been maintained at a reasonable level over the past 15 years--and weren't.
We have bears in the yard and routinely walking down the powerline that sides our property. I live in a community called Moose Pass. I haven't seen a moose here in well over a year and yes the bears hammer the few moose calves each year.
I think the brown baiting season ends early, May 15 is what I remember, is that correct? Those dates in itself will greatly reduce the sow kill.
Black bears in this area are top notch table fare but I suspect many never eat fish. If I kill one I will definitely experiment with some canned "Griz" which always makes ANY meat tender.

I hugely agree with this statement! I now have a .458 SOCOM (big-bore AR15) that hangs from my belt off a carry handle, ready for battle!
I thought I read somewhere that the brownie baiting part ended May 15 BUT I can't find it in writing anywhere I have looked. Anyone else see that part? Looking at my notes from past years shows only one time being hit a couple days before May 15, all other first time hist were nearly 2 weeks later.
Grizziler Bear, it's whats for dinner.
Steve,
It goes thru May 31.
I'm sure it depends on where you are at but in most places on the Peninsula the brownies hit as early as late April, and stay until 3rd or 4th week in May or so. Then they seem to move on. Consensus seems to be that they leave the baits alone then because the moose calves are dropping and they target them. Makes sense.
I guess if you don't have much for moose around they stay as they don't have new-born calves and stressed cows to target.
Probably the only time I'd feel the need to be 20 feet up the tree. Good luck!
and it begins....did a bit of scouting and found a spot. I decided to be in a tree but only 10ft up and 15 yards back, im in the process of hauling a barrel and getting ready to prepare a spread for them. 5 more days and I can bait.
Looking forward to your story (ies). Good luck!
:campfire:
10 foot up the tree with a 8 foot bear ;>)
Good luck, looking forward to future post.
Tom Hoffman did it from a tree and Im sure you'll get it done too. Good luck and enjoy.
Good luck. Be safe , consciences , and have fun .
Wow take lots of pictures! This should be very good!
good luck
I am excited for you. From what I hear, there is no shortage of grizz by you.
Looking forward to your story and picts. What a great opportunity!

No, actually, you don't have a right to defend your possession of the meat in this instance. That's not a DLP situation:
"Property means your dwelling, means of travel, pets or livestock, fish drying racks, or other valuable property necessary for your livelihood or survival. While game meat is considered your property, you may not kill a bear to protect it unless the meat is critical for your survival. Even in this situation you still must do everything possible to protect the meat (i.e. proper storage, scaring the scavenger, etc. See Safely in Bear Country) before you may kill the bear."
ADF&G: What To Do If You Have A Conflict With a Bear (http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=livingwithbears.conflicts)
you are right about that, but I will not be alone while trailing or butchering, who ever is with me will also have a tag so if its not a sow with cubs....
Hmmm. What if a 10 footer shows up?? You can poke him in the eye:) Good luck with that. He may poke back!
I hope a 10 footer does....hope I don't shoot him in the eye
Talking with Larry Lewis at the Kenai Brown Bear Committee last Tuesday. The salvage requirement only applies to bears taken at bait stations. Good luck Jason! If you need lead back-up give me a call. Might ask to use your new smoke pole though!
Lots of enthusiasm/criticism surrounding this hunt. Kind of a blue collar brown bear opportunity. One of the best percs for calling this place home...
Good luck to you Jason, please take pics as I will be going on a brown bear hunt in 2 years. I am trying to learn as much as possible.
Sounds like an awesome hunt. Cant wait for pics and a great story.
Jason, good luck buddy,,,,,,,,they're baaaaack. Saw a nice one down Turnagain yesterday. I think the lack of snow brought them out early this year..
I hauled in another stand to my site today and came across 3 brown bears playing in the snow....I got to watch for 30 mins as they rolled and slid around. the big problem was I couldn't tell the sow from the cubs.... even after the tracks in the fresh snow. 2 were 7 foot give or take and one was a wee smaller. the next problem was I didn't bring any kind of weapon and they were only 60 yards or so. they were only 300 yards down wind of my site. hope they stick around and track some scent into a big guy
my camera was in my pack, I didn't want to move or make noise and spoil the rare moment I was so blessed to witness.
they are quite goofy and remarkable at the same time
Im watching this one!! good luck!!
Can't wait for the play by play. I'll be watching this one closely. Good luck
Best of luck to you...... What a hunt that will be ;)
Good luck fella, sounds like a lot of fun to me.

:campfire:
cromebuck you will have a hard time pulling it out of my hands, you could be my bow bearer though.
Good luck Jason. Stay safe and shoot straight. What a great opportunity; I hope it works out for you and will be anxiously watching the progress.
:campfire:
Following. Good Luck!
did the bait up this morning, I like to take a jug of grease, poke a few holes then go for a hike. dragging it in a large loop back to the site. I usualy do 3 of these so I can cover most of the area within a 1/4 mile. while doing that my buddy came across several sets of bear tracks. he said they were probably black bear.
Good luck
well I was hoping to put some trail cam pics up but im just lucky to have my truck in the drive way. it doesn't drive so well now. but I am the proud new owner of a atv. Ill be checking in tomorrow.........
Hey Jason, if you have a local bakery or food distributor, (commercial like food services) get a gallon of anise oil. Pour it onto the ground at your pit and every bear that visits will leave a trail back to the pit for you. It will last for weeks and they LOVE the stuff.
This is going to be good. Jr, if you need some really stinky bait, Bill can volunteer himself:)
I am very excited for you. Keep updating please!
Good luck! Take some pic's
I am so envious of you Alaska guys. This will be followed closely. Sounds like a great opportunity for one of those new Grizzly Instinct three blade 190 grain heads. Watch you six.
And shoot straight.
Looking forward to this one.
nada yet. refreshed the stinky

not shooters but hopefully helpfull
Cool pics. Hope you are having a great time. Pretty freakin cool. I will be keepin tabs on your hunt. Hope you get a shot at a Big One.
Wow! Any nice Brownie with a bow would be a shooter to me. Cool pics.
Cool! They look to be in great shape. Not shooters yet, but nicely filled out and good fur.
Larry's biggest complaint as with others, most notably the KWR, is the amount of juveniles and sows that were taken in the last season.
I admire your restraint, most people utilizing this unique opportunity have the "if it's brown it's down" mentality. A 7-8' bear is just not the specimen IMHO.
Can only imagine the grip I'd have on my rifle entering that area to get set up....
Good on ya.
no experience of my own, but is that a boar and a sow in those pics?
or do some boars run together early on likes bucks do?
(http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg211/jrchambers/bear%20bait/EK000053.jpg) (http://s249.photobucket.com/user/jrchambers/media/bear%20bait/EK000053.jpg.html)
its rolling in a bunch of fry oil
im pretty sure they are 3 year old siblings. I couldt tell you if they are boars or sows. im betting the round one is a sow though
after looking at the 90 pics again im pretty sure it is a sow and a 2 or 3 year old cub.
Wow. Thanks for sharing. Very neat
Crazy good stuff! Hope ya kill a monster!
Good to see that you're getting some action already. We set up 3 sites last weekend on the KP and hope to have a little activity by this next weekend when I can get out of Anchorage. I'm a first time bear baiter so this should be interesting.
Very cool! I hope your barrel holds up, Jason. How long does your season go?
Dang, they are some beautiful animals. I'm looking forward to the hero pics.
I'm bad at judging bears. How much do you think they weigh?
I suspect the sow is around 400 and the other a good bit less.
I checked the site this morning, im pretty sure I got woofed at from a distance but no new pictures on the camera.
the season for brown bears ends may 31 and blacks june 30
I am assuming a 400 lb Grizzly is pretty small compared to a full grown specimen?
Good Luck!
Best of luck and be safe!
well seeing is how the sow was mating 2 or 3 springs ago and was at least 3 years old when she mated I would say she isn't to far from full grown.
I was thinking she looked pretty darn nice, more than I would wanna wrestle with. I am terrible at judging size though.
Good Luck!

I kept a pick of me. im 10 foot from the barrel and im 6'2" and 220
Cool picture, big bear! That'd be one heck of a black bear...if it was a black bear.
I put a pic of myself approaching the stand this evening on the last comment. Im thinking that the bears are a bit smaller than I was thinking. but she for sure is a time and a half my weight
Any pictures of you hugging the barrel ? :biglaugh:
next time I will do that......
Very cool pics. This is very interesting to follow for certain. Thanks for taking us along.
How is your shot angle going to be from 10'? Gonna get both lungs?
absolutely...the barrel is up hill about 6 foot of elevation so I will only be 4 foot or so higher.
Good answer. That should up the pucker factor as well.
after 2 days the site was destroyed. 60lbs of food are missing and I think this guy had a lot to do with it. He was competing with the sow and cub from 8 pm on both evenings and winning.
(http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg211/jrchambers/bear%20bait/EK000749.jpg) (http://s249.photobucket.com/user/jrchambers/media/bear%20bait/EK000749.jpg.html)
I will be in the stand tomorrow and every night until I see him in person
I am loving this tread! Go get em bud..
There is no doubt on that one. Awesome specimen right there. Let's see him laying dead still here soon. Good luck.
relax and pick a spot. time to live the dream!
I haven't much time lately to get on tradgang, but I make time to check this thread repeatedly. Good luck again, can't wait for this one to come together.
Good luck on your hunt and be safe. I am assuming you have back up to the bow with you and you have your affairs in order.
My two dream hunts are new Zealand red stag and a brownie. Friend demonstrated the stag, go get a big brown!

wonder who got who. hope to see a pic of that downed bruiser soon.
THAT is a nice bear....Good luck and shoot straight! Rick.
Cant remember if you posted before, but what is your bow set up??
I hope you see him in person. Dandy looking bear!
good luck, what a situation he is a beauty,
That is a beauty of a bear. Hope you can get a pop at him!! I'll bet you're getting some good exercise bringing all that bait in!
Good Luck!
I hope you get a crack at him, and make the most of it!
Bisch
I sat for five hours this evening. no sightings but im sure I heard at least two moving around close. the wind wasn't great but they will just have to get used to it.
on another note last night I think this is a new bear. head to body ratio is different as well as some color (http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg211/jrchambers/bear%20bait/friday2.jpg) (http://s249.photobucket.com/user/jrchambers/media/bear%20bait/friday2.jpg.html)

great thread ! Not sure I could climb down and walk out in the dark....
keith im shooting a Greg built shrew. 63lbs at 31". ad trad with a woodsman elite head.
Thank you for taking the time to do this! I know the work involved. Good luck!!
I pulling for you. Best of luck and shoot straight. 63# should do the trick.
Great thread
Wow, this is a fun one! Do you pull your feet a little higher in the stand when the brownie shows up!?
on my way for another 5.5 hour sit. well see...
Good Luck!
This is great, good luck. Be safe!
I am glued to this thread!!!!
Good luck and, most of all, have fun!
Good luck.
Pins and needles!
This is a great thread! Gotta love Alaska, I can't imagine living in a place where I could bait and hunt brown bear.
Sounds like that set up will work just fine. Im keeping an eye on this one,,,,,
:campfire:
nada again... he must be smarter than the average you know what. They hit it at 11:30 last night for a little and that was it. I hope they haven't moved on. tomorrow I will bring in 100 lbs of dog food and some more grease. I think that I will try leaving some stinky socks and t shirt so they can get used to my smell.
Good luck,great story.
I just finished packing some more bait and to my surprise no bears were there last night. the last hit was Saturday night and the last time the boar was in was Saturday early am. I know of a bit of competition around but dang I still have a lot of bait. Im wondering if the sow moved on after kicking the cub then the boar followed. Hope they come back soon
Fingers crossed for you. Sometimes you get the bear and sometimes... well you know what I mean.
Great thread... I'm pulling for you.
Hang some of Duckbills clothes around. They will come arunnin'!
Jason if you haven't seen it yet the Disneynature movie Bears is still in town. Take the wife and boys and get some inspiration (not that you need it). Great cinematography and a couple absolute toads of brown bears.
Ok, so I don't post much here, but read a lot. I have checked this thread every day since you started it. Very interesting, and hoping to see the end result pictures. Good luck.

new bear yesterday morning, biggest yet
Great thread...you are going to do it.
I think Tim's(chinook907) Biblical verse signature says it all...
Called Jason this afternoon just to make sure he wasn't bear poop! He sat in the rain lastnight.
He's just crazy enough to get this done.
Good luck brother!

Hunt smart, hunt the wind. Good luck.
And???? You must have sat last night!
I'm feelin' good about the new guy! Thinkin' you may get a whack at him.
Anyone else "feelin" it?
Keep calm and try not to soil yourself.
Way cool post jr! Living the dream.
I sat till 1am in hopes that they would come in in the dark and get used to me being there. Nothing came in but I had a friend sit with me and he was loud. Really loud. I will give it a day off and then spend friday night till first light.

Or use him for bait:) lol
Leave the loud guy at home and kill that bear!!!!!!!!!!
im hoping I will have enough moon light to shoot after about 1 am if not maybe they will stick around till 4. I hope they make some noise on the barrel while im sleeping.
I am addicted to this thread!
Sleeping that close to a bait barrel.....not me, LOL! Best of luck!!
great thread, stick with it~ if it were easy everyone would do it! How are the mosquitoes? (are they out yet?)

Congrats. Can't wait for the rest.
It sure adds another reason for wearing a safety harness!
Congratulations!! Glad you are safe and I look forward to the story and pictures. Tell us the full setup of your bow, arrow and broadhead, distance of shot, penetration, distance traveled...everything. This is a great thread and thanks for taking us along.
Oh yeah!!!!
What a spectacular accomplishment!
As I said a few posts up, I've been glued to this one and checking it multiple times a day. I just had a feeling with the pic of the last bear. "Dead bear walking"....
Can't wait to read the details. Rest and spend time reflecting on what God has provided. We will be here.
Ken
Great thread so far.... it's gonna get even better. Congrats!
Congratulations on your accomplishment and an excellent post so far.
Sensational! Major congrats!
X's everything already said :readit: But as for the safety harness. Where most of the new one seem to incorporate some means to allow you to descend, Mine would jack me up about 40' in the tree
Looking forward to the rest of the story and pictures, Great Accomplishment!

My daughter's going to the prom. We're getting ready and I keep running in here to see if Jason has updated.
She asked why I kept coming and checking it.
Needless to say, she doesn't understand!

Most people don't understand. We're sitting over a bear bait in Alaska with Jason
Take all the time you need. The fact that we're suffering and waiting like schoolgirls should be of no concern...really.
Can't AKDan or someone in Alaska go to Kenai, and help Jason finish skinning and butchering, so we can see some pictures ?

Wow, talk about teaser pics! Those fight pictures are like nothing I've ever seen before.
On the edge of my seat for the rest!
Keeps getting better and better.....
Congratulations, and thanks for sharing the adventure. Patiently waiting....Okay...anxiously, waiting for the final chapter.
here it is.
I went in on Friday evening with the intent on sleeping there till dawn. I packed a wool blanket and a pillow wrapped in polar fleece coats, I actually packed a book that I have been thinking of reading.
I rode the wheeler down the powerline and prepared my gear for the hike with a pack, bow and 375 cal rifle.
I have fashioned a sling for my shrew so I can sneak around with my thumb on the safety of my cannon.
the ground was dry and loud so I took upwards of 30 min to cover 300 yards.
When I arrived I could tell that the bait had been hit hard since Wednesday night- Thursday morning.
I took my time changing the sd card and climbing up to the stand.
I had cleared some leaves from the trail for the last 200 yards so I could be as quiet as the frequent squirles.
once I was in the stand I hung my rifle and pulled up the line with my pack and shrew.
I first hung my bow and then began setting up camp for the night.
Usualy the first thing I do is nock a arrow and put on my tab but tonight I had a lot to do.
I pulled out my backrest pillow, then the urine bottles, then the wool blanket that would double as leg support as well as insulation at sundown, that the night before dropped to 32 deg.
The next items were a hat and bug net as well as a set of mitten covered fingerless gloves to shield the bugs. after that I pulled out some wick sticks that I doused in trapping cat lure for cover scent. I hung one and the last item was the novel that I was really quite exited to have time to read> I have a 8 yr old boy a 3 year old boy and a 1 mo old boy. so hobbies are but a battle to enjoy.
All of this preparation took about 2 min max.
Getting good
It was now 7:30 pm. All of the crap I had mentioned before was stacked on my small 32x24 stand. That's when I hear the crunches.
At first I was a bit confused, then assumed they were from a squirrel, not too loud, then a porcupine that I had seen before. But they were just too loud. I looked over my shoulder and saw him at 20 yards.
He was cautious and played the north wind a bit. Once he was comfy he strolled in and laid down to eat. He just nibbled at the goodies I had to offer while keeping a very sharp eye on his surroundings, even a little squirrel could get him to jump.
I thought at first that he was the sow that I've been getting pics of. After a good bit, I decided that I would let him pass and wait to see what might come. So, I slowly put on my hat, net, gloves and began to enjoy.
While watching this bear, I began to notice a few things that led me to think that it was the largest bear on trail cam record. After it got up once to move to the other side I began thinking that I might should take it. The first problem was that the bear did not stand still or broadside for more than a second or two. The second was I'm not convinced that it is a boar, (actually I was sure it was a sow)and that it did not present an acceptable shot for 20 mins.
Tuned in for more......
Bisch
While it was feeding I got an arrow nocked and my tab on. I looked through my trail cam pics from the night before. I looked through them many times and looked at the fight scene and recognized the loser of the fight by the growth on the rear right by the tail.
(http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg211/jrchambers/bear%20bait/friday2.jpg) (http://s249.photobucket.com/user/jrchambers/media/bear%20bait/friday2.jpg.html)
I began to compare the winner with the bear that was 15 yards from me. I decided that it was the same bear, sow or boar, it was the largest that has been here.
I weighed the fact that there was a quota set by f&g for 70 bears or 14 sows and I was torn. That's when he jumped up and alerted to the east. I quickly made a choice that I wanted to take it. I stood up, picked up my bow. The bear was broadside and looking away. The next few seconds are a bit fuzzy as I drew and released.
I am a bit disappointed in the fact that I did not have the fever shakes that I expected.
I am thankful that auto pilot took over at that point, I truly think that I cut the clump of fur I was bearing down on.
There was a loud crack, followed by a deep angry roar.
I could see the fletch side of the arrow, hanging out by about 8 inches. The bear did a 360 and bolted for the thickest and steepest part of the ridge. I heard heavy brush crashing within seconds. I then began going through my backup list on my phone.
While I was talking to my first friend I heard more crashing, and it wasn't coming from the bear I just shot.
Seconds later the other boar (with the growth on his rear) rolled in like he owned the joint.
He was foamy at the mouth and woofing in every direction. He pounded his way right under my stand and then caught the wind of the bear I just shot. He headed right for it, I was relieved to see that he was not as large as the bear I had shot, even though he had a large head and tough looking to boot. I tried to woof at him and distract him from the other bears trail to no avail. He looked at me and proceeded down the hill to confront his opponent.
After the second boar was out of sight I recalled my backup list and told them to bring their tags and big guns, as if they were not already bringing both.
I then climbed down and walked 400 yards out to the comfort of the wide open power line and wheeler. I called my dad and was explaining the situation when I notice another bear coming out in the clearing not 50 yards from me. I told him ill call him back and checked the bear out with my rifle scope. I immediately recognized him or her as the cub that had hit my bait 3 weeks earlier.
(http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg211/jrchambers/bear%20bait/EK000083.jpg) (http://s249.photobucket.com/user/jrchambers/media/bear%20bait/EK000083.jpg.html)
I watched it as it eventualy crossed my wind. It bolted for the nearest cover.
I for a while then proceeded to the truck.
Don't stop now, things are getting exciting!!
My buddy brought a side by side razor and another wheeler as well as two more buddies packing 2 500sws a 12ga and another 375, tags for all.
We approached the site with extreme caution. I lead the way looking for blood with 3 others looking for the other boar. We came to a 2way on the ridge and split up. After 20 yards down the two trails there was still no blood.
One of my friends went right, two of us went down the trails and another went left. It wasn't second before I heard the words every bowhunter cherishes, BEAR DOWN.
It turns out that the bear had only taken a few steps out of sight before loosing it and rolling off of the trail.
All four of us broke a heavy sweat rolling it down the hill and to a spot that we could get the side by side to a tree that we could winch it up in the back.
the rest is a bunch of work and stink. :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl:

jrchambers, congratulations.I've enjoyed this thread from the beginning. It sounds like you did everything perfectly and what a beautiful bear.I'll just throw something out for you to think about, but those fight pictures look more like pre-breeding behavior to me and the other bear looks like a sow.
I don't think you said but, your bear was a boar?It seems way early for that behavior but it still looks that way to me.Just a thought.Maybe one of your buddies will find out for sure.
Great job!

Congratulations on a fantastic critter.
Truely an amazing thread. That is a noble beast and impressive accomplishment. At 55 years old I'll probably never get to do this myself, thanks for the ride.
Nice job Jason! So great to see hard work and dedication pay off. Thanks for taking us along!
well my buddy is still looking. he said that he has blood for 70 yards and then it quit. Im starting to get a bit worried as it is 70 degrees today. im afraid he got liver and a lung. he said the arrow disappeared, but he hasn't found the shaft yet. I might take my dogs in there tomorrow.
The guy hunting my site didn't see anything last night, he is going to try again tonight because I heard a rumor that the season is soon to be closed
Congrats on an amazing bear!
Thanks for taking us along and writing an edge of the seat thriller story. Best of luck recovering your friends bear.

Great hunt and thanks for sharing! That's prime area that you're in. I used to fish down by the college when I lived up there. I sure miss it.
Incredible! Congratulations on a beautiful Bear. Thank you for taking the time to take us a long!
Nice going JR!
They better not close the season, I have three friends coming the last week of May!
Luke is checking our furthest bait to the North on his way back to ANC, no call in a few more minutes should mean a hit and a sit. Other two aren't hit yet but will be soon no doubt.
I had shoulder surgery so I am pretty much out of the game his spring.
Holy cow! That is a giant paw. Really exciting stuff. :clapper:
steve I heard that they only needed one more sow as of Friday.
Wow! What a great bear! Congrats!
Awesome!! Congratulations.
Junior! Congrats!!!
I just heard about this from a friend. I'll try to catch up with you when I get back. I'm leaving for Sandpoint and the brown ones down there in the morning.

Let me just offer what others have...awesome and thank you.
sorry to worry you Steve H I just heard from the horses mouth that 0 sows have been killed and the season is going on as planned.
Thanks to every one for the compliments, I know the bear is not a monster but I couldn't be more pleased. The hide squared 8'2" the skull might break 26". I did not get it on a scale but I know that 4 grown men could not get it off the ground, and the suspension on the sxs was all the way down, the wheels were rubbing the fender.
JR awesome bear and congrats!
I want one! :)
Great story on a great opportunity. Congrats!!

That is a pretty dang big bear.

Congrats ! Thanks for taking us with you.
Last night my friend and I put in one last ditch effort to find his bear he arrowed on Saturday night. I brought my 2 dogs, one black lab and a bear fighting akita mix. He showed us the blood trail and the last blood. The dogs showed some interest in a trail to the left so I let the wild one go. both dogs tore up the hill with us in chase. we tried to keep them in sight when we caught up they were sniffing out a little clearing of scrub spruce. I told my buddy to wait back abit so we didn't distract them from relocating the trail. After a little time they didn't move on so Brian took two steps twards them and shrieked in pure joy. The bear was right there. And it was huge.
we quickly noticed that a rear quarter had been eaten. I walked up and tried to lift its head when a full sheet of fur slipped from the hide. There was plenty of joy and bummers at the same time. We managed to get a few pics and make some phone calls to fish and game. They said to bring what we can salvage, if the head is enough to determine sex then that would be enough. I lost my lunch twice removing the melon on that beast.
It was only about a 8 foot to 8'6" body but had to have weighed around 800lbs and a rough hide on measure of the head came up with around 29" if we measured correct it could be one of the largest bow kills on the peninsula ever.

That bob lee is getting some real mojo on it. I bought it off of here in 06. Who knows what it has done before me but I put down my first bear deer and wolverine with it, now its really finding its groove.
Thats it! Im moving to alaska!
Looks like you guys are having a pretty great hunting year up there. I hope your upcoming hunts are ad good as this one. Thanks for posting.
Wow! Those dogs are heros! They deserve some recognition. Whats their names?? Congrats to everybody!
Kona is the 13 year old lab and Hank is the 4 year akita
13! WOW! Any idea of where it was shot?
one lung and liver I would guess, maybe alittle of both lungs, it only traveled 200 yards max but doubled back and circled.
Congrats to both of you!
:clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
We are at 13:1 now JR for 7 and 15 combined. You did have me nervous for a bit as I have THREE TradGangers coming from various parts of Alaska the last week in May.
We have three baits out and found out one was DESTROYED. I had a whopper brownie coming into that site a couple years ago, hopefully the same one only bigger!
Congrats to Brian on his recovery. Nice job with the canines Jason! Can't wait to see the skulls of both of your bears.
Steve I got myself worried as well, I got into a now or never mentality and went hard at it trying to beat the quota. My fault for not just taking the time to call myself.
Good effort to find thatbear
A 29" brownie is truly a big old boar. Congratulations to your friend on his kill! That will yield quite a few surviving moose calves for next year.
That's great that you found the other bear. If nothing else the skull will make a wonderful mount.
I can't imagine a 29" boar with a bow. WoW!!
Mike
Makes hunting black bears pretty dang tame by comparison. Great stuff!
If that bear was 8' on the carcass, that's an absolute monster.A bear like that will square 10',easily.Geat bears for sure.Nice going guys.
Wow, congratulations on #2!!!
How about some pics of the skulls when u can? I bet they are impressive.
That's absolutely Awesome! Great Bear!
I've been on Black Bear Baits and had Grizzlies come in so I fully understand the excitement!
Glad to see a dream come true!
LD
Don't you just love it when a plan comes together...
his hide would measure around 8 tail to nose and 9 claw to claw. the skull ended up 27 3/4".
the troopers are giving him a hard time, he will find out this afternoon if they are going to try and charge him with something, the trooper seems like he know very little about animals and bow hunting. He asked him why he would shoot a bear with that thing and not just use his rifle. then he asked how heavy the broad head was, brian said 150 and the trooper tried to tell him it was too light and illegal.
At least Brian knows he did all he could and then some. Hopefully they come to their senses.

here is a trail cam pick of brains bear right before he stuck it. pretty amazing the bear was as thick as it was long. From what im learning around here there are some bears that just don't get long but they get heavy and a big noodle

There isn't anything dictating the weight of the broadhead,,,,,total weight of the arrow is the only criteria that has any weight restrictions. 300 grains. Maybe that is what the trooper meant when he asked for the weight.
What was Brians bow and arrow set up?
im not sure on the shaft but I think gold tips. I also think its a zwickey. the bob lee is 65lbs at 28 he draws 27
Plenty total arrow weight
He is fine and was good to go. Sounds like a little misunderstanding. If he's using goldtips with a zwickey he's gonna be at least 485 to 500 gr. No sweat there.
And he is fine for minimum poundage for grizz (50#)
that's the point the guy asked for head weight not arrow weight. he also looked at the marks on the bow and said what only 28 lbs. the guy is just lost. the tried to convince Brian that only birds had been eating on it when half of the pelvis gone
Very enjoyable read. Thanks for taking us along on the hunt both in print and with the pics. Congrats on your outcome and best wishes for your friend also.
Thank you for sharin' a most-excellent Alaskan journey with Trad Gang!

This is an amazing thread and by the responses everyone was on the edge of the seat. Kudos to the author on that one.
As for the bears, absolutely amazing. Congrats on a trophy of a lifetime.
as far as the eating goes, it didn't make very good steaks, im thinking sausage and pep sticks for the next few years.
You've heard it all already Jason, but THANKS for taking us along !

Nothin' like sausage and pepper sticks to hide a chewy old grizzly. Great job!

It's been a pleasure following this thread. Thank you.
so I let the bait sit for a while. brown bear season ended on the first. I went up to the site Thursday. to my not so much surprise the place was a mess the barrel was half flat. I changed the memory card and began to walk out.
When I was almost to my wheeler I heard a crack, I paused to listed, then I saw brown moving below me. It was a very large boar. at 80 yards I watched him lay down in some grass and begin to feed. I might be a little crazy but I thought the wind is good lets see if I could get in bow range. Once I got to 20 yards I decided im probably just asking for it. so I sat and watched for 20 min. The second the wind swirled once he was up and off.
when I checked the camera I was pleasantly surprised that the blackies started hitting right on cue.

these are two separate loner bears.
and the third and largest one has tree kitten sized cubs.

ill be hunting tonight to see if I can get a look at some of the blackies. I assume my main weapon will be a video camera.
Too bad the hide got chewed up...that bear would make a heck of a full body mount and still save a few bucks because most taxidermists work off the length for pricing...make sure to show us what you guys end up with for both bears in terms of taxidermy work...and congratulations for all the hard work you guys put into the hunt and taking us along
DDave
At a glance I thought it was Chuck Norris that killed that Brown bear up top. Congratulations on the bear and thanks for bringing us along.

I agree, thanks!!!! That is my dream hunt.
Thanks for all the trail camera pics to go along with the account of your great kill.
Well Done!
Amazing thread. Determination and know how will get it done! :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
Looking forward to your Blackie hunt if its anything like your Brownie hunt.
not looking good for the blackies. ive got a new pair of browns hitting, since then not one pic of a black.
Is it too late to hit the avalanche shoots and spot and stalk?
much to green and the fish are in the kenai so a lot of the mountain bears are moving down. the avalanche shoots are no longer the only food source and the bushes that are in the shoots are fully leafed.
well the bait has been a bear mecca the last three days, 3 or 4 blacks with one good one, and atleast 5 browns coming in at all times of the day. I just dumped a load of bait and walked up on one of the smaller blacks. btw there is a absolute monster of a brown in there every 3 days. he makes a 9 footer look like a puppy.
ill be sitting tonight. hope to get some video of the browns or a shot at the big black
oops
:coffee:
I hope this story is as good as the brown's .
I have 1500 trail cam pics I would like to put up but it is too much work filtering out the 5 or so I want to put up.

it is not that hard to isolate small quantities from LOTS of pics. I do it when I go through my elk trail cam pics and sometimes I get hundreds and hundreds of them from July until Sept. I think 1300+ was my all time high on one chip that I had left out for three or four weeks.
This is getting even better!
you're still playing with those stinky dogs? kings are running LOL!
Nice bear btw! should have said something in our msg's, I didn't see this thread going.
Heard rumor (saw pics) of another hoss picked up as well.
ak dan, the kings are running but there is no fishing for them now, that's why im still hunting.
not entirely true the coppers still going, reduce from 4 to 1. Runs going good, counters counting a week or more early than in years past. Summit had snow on wed (4"es). Gulkana was mud by friday.
...hows the bear chasing going? I didnt bother this spring.
Is the kenai and kasilof closed? We're headed down your way this week for a run on the salt and chasing some reds.
Always love fishing with the people and da bears.
Question (bow related finally). did they ever open the area up to bowhunting below the russian for brownies? I've seen some monsters (both blacks and browns) in the area.
That was an incredible hunt and adventure most of us will never take part in. Congratulations on a hard job well done!!!
