Well, my wife and daughter have asked for suggestions for a Christmas present for me. I have decided on a box turkey call. Since I won't be able to listen to any beforehand, I am looking for first hand suggestions ( meaning you have heard/used). I would prefer to support a family business . Thanks in advance.
David Halloran is a family man and makes some of the best turkey calls I've ever heard. I love his box calls simply amazing.
Just google David Halloran turkey calls.
http://springcreekturkeycalls.weebly.com/ I have found these calls some of the best sounding calls. His longbox is incredible. I have at least one of everything Mike builds.
Cherokee Slim makes a work of art and it sounds awesome.
Joebuck's scratch box is awesome, and a work of art.
if you can get your hands on one....Neil Cost! but i wouldnt use/abuse it too much. It just doesnt get anymore custom than that!
Spring Creek calls are great. I have his long box and love it.
Can't go wrong with a scratch box.

Irving Whitt and Albert Paul are not only among the most respected box call makers among their peers, they maintain some of the lowest prices with respect to world class calls.
My personal collection is somewhat expansive and contains calls many times the aforementioned call maker's prices. Not only do these calls rank with the best and actually exceed my expectations of many much higher priced calls, they perform exceptionally well in the field.
These gentleman have a longtime history with respect to call making. Their genuine love for turkeys and craftsmanship is impeccable. What is poured of themselves into each call exceeds the desire for monetary gain. They know precisely how to put the turkey in the box.
Note: Acquiring a fine custom call in such short notice may be challenging.

X2, David is a good guy, who also builds great, maybe better than great turkey calls.
Albert Paul is a master at his craft! He makes the the best sounding and easiest to play box calls I've ever seen! When I first started making calls I used a box of his to try and tune mine to. It just doesn't get any better than his. His are just good as they come.
Spring Creek Calls X3. I have a bloodwood over sassafrass long box that is RASPY and deadly. Brings them on the run and very reasonably priced.
this is who makes mine,, I'm no calling pro but these are sweet sounding calls.

Thank you every one who has replied. I have decided on choosing a long paddle call, purely for field use. Now, please keep suggestions coming.
In that case, I would recommend Dan Wittenberg.

Call is guaranteed, since you can not hear it before hand, if you do not like it return for a refund.
If you need the call to kee-kee make sure to let him know before hand.
Good luck, if you give a price range it would help with recommendations.
