Title: Border Black Douglas arrow rest
Post by: SactoBowman on November 21, 2013, 05:18:00 PM
I have a Black Douglas on order and it should get here around mid December.  They don't ship the bow with any arrow rest and I wanted to get some advice from Border owners and what you use for arrow rests.

I will be shooting carbon arrows most likely Victory VAP.  Sid mentioned that the shelf is cut 5/16 past center.

Thanks!

Bill

Speedwalker,

Do you place anything under the Velcro?  Some bows seem to have a ridge under the rest.

Sorry for the delay.  No, I don't place anything under it but I have seen some people use a piece of toothpick or wooden match.

I use industrial strength velcro. Since I am shooting FMJ's, I place an extra piece (small) under the side plate.

Best I've found, available from Grainger:

Felt, F1, 1/16" Thick, 1" x 12"

•   Felt Strip
•   Wool Felt
•   Backing Type Adhesive
•   Thickness 1/16 In
•   Width 1 In
•   F1 Grade
•   Off White Color
•   Density 1 Lbs/Sq Yd
•   Max Temp 200 F
•   Vibration Absorption High
•   Abrasion Resistance Excellent
•   Durometer 30 to 40 Shore A
•   Tensile Strength 500 PSI
•   Hardness Extra Firm

After I cut to desired shape, I gently stroke with a lighter; just enough to burn off loose hairs. Then, peel off adhesive strip and firmly apply. The brown toasted hairs eventually wear off and you're left with a clean high performing rest/plate.

I tested this stuff (F1 wool felt) on my Border Hawk Hunter and found it to be the best rest/plate material I've ever used. Now, I use it on all my recurves and longbows.

Under the arrow rest I use a small leather piece for better clearence and under the side plate too but more thick, the total thickness for the side plate on a Border with the sight window cut at 5/16 will be around 3/16

Ok thanks guys.  I bought some industrial Velcro and it seems to be working well.
