Title: Anyone shooting a 60" Toelke Whip?
Post by: TxAg on November 19, 2013, 09:25:00 PM
How long is your draw?  I shot a 60" several years back, but my draw length has increased over the years as I found my form.  I shoot 62-66" Toelkes now with just over a 29" draw....wondering if I could get away with the 60" (not that I need another bow, but it's fun to dream).

I tried it and it didn't work for me. My draw is a little over 29" also. Settled on 64's now with one 62".

I spoke with Dan today. He said a 60" would work provided he made some subtle changes to the riser length/limb length. He and I have the same draw length and both shoot split so I'm generally good with his recommendations.

If anyone else has any anecdotes, I'm all ears.

I have a 62" Whip TD, shoot split and draw 28".  I wouldn't want to go much shorter than 62" on these bows since for me it feels just a little bit stacky at full draw, but then I usually shoot 64"-66" mild RD bows and may be a bit spoiled by the extra length/smoothness.  Toelke's really are very nice bows though, I sure do like mine.

I shoot a 58 inch d/r bow at over 30 inches...just depends on the bow design and what you prefer...finger pinch and stacking do not stop you from shooting well

Sounds like Dan has you covered.  A lot of it is subjective and also heavily dependent on bow design.  Some guys like a pull through feeling of smoothness so go for longer bows, some guys don't mind a little build in weight at the end to create a bit of a draw stop.  My draw is much like yours- right about 29.25", and I have bows from 68" down to 58".  The 58" bow is an exception and is designed to be smooth at a short length.  Also, consider that by going a bit shorter and approaching the stack point of a given bow design you're actually getting the maximum performance out of the bow.  Dan seems to have you covered, I don't see why with a longer working limb that you couldn't shoot 58 or even 60" if the bow is made for it.  Also unless you have real big mitts I would think finger pinch wouldn't be much of an issue unless you were going 58 or less.   That being said, I mainly enjoy my longer bows for the overall mass and stability vs the shorter stuff.  For a design like the Whip I prefer 64" or more but that doesn't mean 60 isn't gonna do the job in the right hands.  The 58" bow I have now and love is a forward handle design and I think that helps greatly when going shorter.  Some bowyers like Sixby or Kirk will likely chime in with some real knowledge.  Good luck and trust in Dan.  He's mighty talented.

I owned one that stacked a bit at 29" and Dan had me measure the riser length. Mine had a longer riser which meant correspondingly shorter limbs. He said it would have worked for me with a shorter riser/longer limbs. I'd talk to him. He knows his bows!

I have a 29.5" draw and prefer bows that are between 56" to 60".

Bladepeek is correct, Dan uses different length risers for different draw lengths.  I believe that the lengths were 18.75" for longer draws and 21" for 28ish and below.

I have a 62" and a 60" Whip, both with the short risers and draw 29.5" with no noticeable stacking.   Both bows are very smooth, the 60" surprises everyone that has tried it.  They can't believe that it's only 60"!

I've never been happier with a bow purchase than I have been with my Whips.
