Been using a Katadyn Hiker for a while and it's been great with proper maintenance. I usually carry tablets for a backup too though.

Sawyer Squeeze.  Simple, light, cheap, no parts to break/lose, etc.

Katadyn Base Camp works great for groups, is light, and packs away well.

I use a SteriPen (Google it). It's small and will take care of more water than I can use with no chemicals.

I was on a trip last summer and the guys I was with were using aquamira-water-treatment-drops. It did not have any taste to it.

There is usually three of us so this works well for the group. Someone typically carries a single filter. And we carry purifier tablets in case we run out during the day.

With all of the canoe trips and hunting, we have gone through a bunch of them. The Propur is the best we have found and the system we use for everything now, even our house.

I've got a Kathadin base camp and like it very much.  Big and bulky though for one guy.  Three or more the base camp might get the nod, but I'm really liking the Sawyer.
