Well sorta. Long story but I told the boss to shove it and I was going home to see my kiddos and wife. The wife had a job interview today and had to make it so I took my 4 and 2 year old out for a hike with our bows.
First stand I call in a big ol' fox squirrell and he holds up 25yd high and distant so my 4 year old and I let arrows go. Squirrel 1 , us 0.
Next set I call in another fox squirrel and this one is only about 20 feet up and 15 yds away but the shot is thru some branches but oh we'll , all I'm doing is stoking the fire in the kids at this point. All three of us shoot and now its squirrel 2, us 0.
Few more sets and no squirrels but did manage to call in some blue jays and a Cooper's hawk.
Last set we call in another fox squirrell and its a tree topper but we let em rip.
squirrell 3 , us 0.
We had a blast , lost a few arrows and enjoyed the woods. No it's not exactly te hunting I want to do in full rut but I love every chance I get to take the kids out.x
We have more Osage here than the law allows. I know you bowers love it but I dont like em taking over my whole property

Congrats Brian, glad you got out and got to spend time with the family.
Tom
You did we'll to take the day off.
Those pictures are priceless
You are blessed for sure. I wish mine were that young again.
What the hell are those yellow things, gourds?!
The squirrels didnt win because you built a memory for your kids. Looks like a great time.
I believe those are the fruits of an Osage orange tree.
Pure awesomeness!
Bisch
So those are fruits from an Osage tree? I can honestly say I have never come across an Osage tree in my life.
That looks like a fun time .
Thanks everyone. I enjoyed it greatly as did the kiddos.
And yes those are "hedge apples" or "Osage oranges" from the ever so famous Osage orange tree I.e. self boywers dream wood lol
Brian,
Good on ya brother!!!! Looks like a great day was spent with your children. Nothing like being a dad eh buddy.
Man I am glad you got out today ... Good thing you were not here in Wisconsin, we got about 2 inches of snow and it will get down to about 14 degrees tonight. I am typing this next to my wood stove ...so nice and cozy.
Great pics, great story, great day my friend.
Bob.
Thanks Bob.
Yeah the cold front just came in. They are calling for 70% chance of snow (nothing like you northerners get) and a high of 34 tomorow. Lucked out for sure
A golden outing that will never tarnish.
God help the wild life in you local woods...That is a good looking "tribe". Too fun
This has to be one of the best hunting stories of this season.
Thank you for sharing!
Does this mean your home for good now?
God bless,Mudd
Wonderful Pictures!
My son is now 30yrs/old, but I still miss the times afield with him, at that age.
I'll take a bushel of them "Oranges"!
Johnny/JAG
There's a market for those oranges. People claim that they keep spiders out of your house. Might just provide you some mad money to buy another bow for the house.

This has got to be the best hunt ever. Good job dad. You got a fine lookin bunch of hunters there.
Yep, Hedge Apples. Osage a plenty. Love the fam pics, those are priceless.
I've used the hedge apples for three years now, keeping the nine-spotted lady beetles out of the house. It's about 99% effective. I've put one or two in each south facing window. The bugs gather on the outside, but won't come in...
The hedge, or osage orange wood is some of the best firewood you can burn. Close relative to mulberry. REALLY tough to cut, nearly impossible once dried.
Thanks every one.
Jag if you wanna box of em drop me a PM and ill get you some when I get back in town and mail em out.
MUDD Unfortunatly I'm not home for good yet, a couple more weeks yet. Being the only Veteran at the company , but being made to work on Veterans Day while the others got off aggravated me enough to call it in and just drive home.
Ill gladly take my butt chewing tomorow with a smile on my face
Man I miss seeing those hedgeapples all over the farm! They make great archery targets, especially when rolling along the ground like a rabbit. Lots of fun! Looks like you had a day to remember for sure.
PM sent.
Thanks, Johnny/JAG
That day is worth more than 10 bucks. The antlered kind. Awesome.
That is as good as it gets!
Awesome...
Great story!! A memorable day for sure!!
Good seeing you out with the kids! We called those fruits horse apples also. We would be on the stand and could hear something and look around and see the horses eating those things. It brings back good memories.
thats what its allll about right there!!!!
Time well spent
Looks like a perfect day in the feild! Thanks for taking the time!
Wow!! It looks like your kids really enjoy being out in the IL woods! Seeing your pics of the cut corn and Osage trees (or "hedge trees" from my neck of IL) really made me miss our family farm down my Murphysboro. Thanks for posting.
Jarhead,
I'm not far from murphysboro and frequent that way often!!
Now that brought a smile and a feeling of warmth to my heart big guy. People are right, the little ones grow up fast! Enjoy!!
This may be some of the best hunting you have ever done. The memories of this outing make a finer trophy than a P&Y buck ever could. I will sure be glad when my grandson is old enough to go hunting with me.
I see "Farther like son" both in rubber boots..lol I HOPE your boss & the rest of the crew said THANK YOU FOR SERVING. If not, thank you Brain....James
Squirrels or no squirrels, that was once very successful hunt! :clapper:
