i find myself eagerly awaiting the start of deer season like i did when i was a kid yet for many more different reasons then before. although i hunted, longer, harder and put more meat on the table as a youth i now yearn for the sights, smells, and overall peace that the woods offers. i look so forward to melting in and becoming part of something that has for so long been a way of life and living to so many. words can not describe what the woods, waters and this time of year mean to me. i feel alive and accepted as a predator. i look forward to hunting with new faces and making new memories. i would much rather see a youth or a good friend make meat rather then myself. i have taken my share and have been rewarded with fond memories or great hunts. i believe i am at a point in my life when the little things are now big and the big things as a youngster are greatly remembered. i will never give up the hunt but i do enjoy slowing down. do you ever notice how beautiful the voice of the cardinal is? how strong and pure the smell of a fresh rain? the innocence of playful fawns? the graceful flight of the hawk? the swirl of smoke from a good pipe? the thunderous gobble of a boss tom at daybreak? the sight of blooming trilliums in a place you never expected to see them? this is my trophy 10 point, this is what i call a succesfull hunt, this is living!! yes i have slowed down but you wouldn't know it if you checked my heart beat at this time of year!!! good luck to all!

Ken, your words say it all.

Amen brother! Hunting should be relaxing time spent alone or with friends taking in everything small and large in God's creation. Not a competition to see who can shoot the most or the biggest.

YEP! WELL said!
Bill
Those are the important things, are'nt they?
Have a great season, my friend.
You definitely paint a beautiful picture with words. I feel the same way, just lack the eloquence to write it down the way you do. I hope you have a wonderful season, and continue to share your writings with us.
It's all that and more Ken, every year i seem to enjoy it more and more. At the end of one archery season i find myself longing for the next, this is the time of year to drop the busy schedules climb on the breaks and just enjoy the outdoors and all that it has to offer. A day in the woods will recharge my batteries better than a week doing most anything else. You have the right mindset.
Very well said Kenny  ><>
Brother from another mother...or is She the same?
Killdeer :campfire:
its funny as i have never set out to think about the words i write, they just come out and i put them down that way. if you knew me you would know i take pride in being one of the biggest red necks you will ever meet!! however the Adirondacks and the beauty of it all just lets the words spill out. i am a very, very simple man that you easily mistake for "the other brother Darrel"!!!
Killy,
mother earth has many children, i just hope i can make a family reunion of yours when you introduce me as your brother!!! :smileystooges:

Ken : Great mind think alike , I couldn't have said it better :0) :campfire:

Ken,
First, ya got the soul of a poet, Son. Second, you can solve that problem of a "family reunion" if'n you'd come down to the b'more shoot next May. Killie got more relatives than she likely wants to admit that show up to see her and share a fire...and she is earth mother to many youth and old alike as she shares her knowledge of flora and fauna.
Why not mark it on your calander?! :D
And we eat good too!!
Yep, ya said it good.
Well said my friend and good luck this season.

You nailed it on the head there Mountain man Ken! While others are getting excited about their college or pro football teams I'm getting excited about white tail deer, turkeys and pheasants. And while others are mourning the loss of long summer days and hot weather, I'm looking forward to the cool, damp and sometimes gloomy weather of the upper Midwest. Hunting season is almost here!
"You've come far Pilgrim"
You have learned well My Brother!!!!!
In spreading your words you are becoming a "teacher"
The Great Spirit is Proud
Well put and the older you get, the more precious the moments. :archer:
Amen Ken
Their ALL SHININ TIMES. Some just a bit BRIGHTER than others.
Mountain man Ken;
Please have those words written down for future generations to read; no better words written..
Very nice my friend. Very nice indeed. I enjoy your posts very much.
Yes. And Ron LaClair nailed it in his response. (Or maybe I'm just in my Jeremiah Johnson mode right now; seem to try to watch it right before deer season each year).
Here,, I'll help raise your heart beat a bit more.
Your osage selfbow is being mailed out tomorrow!! :bigsmyl:
Thank You Ken... You do have a wonderful way with words. :notworthy:

Ken, it's comments like your from kindred souls that keep me coming back to this web address.
You are amoung friends brother....
Ken, I've never met you, but somehow I feel like I know you well. We will share a hunt.
SHININ TIMES they are and brighter every year. Age is the biggest double edged sword i know. i am fearful of growing old yet i yearn for the knowledge that only comes with age. i feel i have learned more about myself and life in the last 2 years as i have slowed down and took the time to look around more, contemplate things and in general just soak up all i can every time i'm in the woods. thank you all for the kind words, i feel very much at home here with you, my brothers and sisters.
You did a wondeful job of putting feelings we all have into words I hope you have a great season.
I yearn for the knowledge that comes with age. And I bet there are a few ninety-year-olds could use it, too! You CAN get old and still be a fool. It takes little or no effort.
I think that by tapping into the joy that is Creation, you are on the good road to a peaceful heart, which is an eternal treasure indeed. You will be no fool when it comes time to change planes (of existance.)

Killy,
your are %100, hit it on the head, right on. i was a bad kid, got worse as young adult and was on a road to nowhere. had much hate in my heart for many things and myself being number one. i had rage in me that was tearing me apart. to many ( most ) what changed my life will be unbeleieveable as it was a simple red tailed hawk feather. it opened my eyes, heart and soul. brother hawk showed me the way and when i started to believe a new world opened. yes, i now have a peaceful heart and it is a beautiful thing. i have MUCH to learn and i look forward to it and each lesson. i really wish you, Killy would post for often as i really enjoy your words and stories.
If I post all the time, I won't live and learn and have new stories to post. I guess I could make 'em up, but they would ring hollow after a while.
Thank goodness my leave was approved for November! :bigsmyl:

Great Stuff Ken.
mountain man i feel ya its amazinng how much we change if we take time to enjoy the inportent things the older we get the more pure and simple things seem to get and we get back towards the place we were supose to be to begin with have a good season blood brother
mountainmanken, as stated before you do have a poets soul. I am in no way considered old(24) however, due to a bungled surgery to remove a kidney part of my remaining one was damaged. I treat each season as if it were my last, because we just do not know. I have been unable to loosen an arrow at an animal since my surgery 4 years ago, not for lack of chances but for enjoying the serenity and peace and the comraderie I feel with my prey. Your words brought tears to my eyes and I wish you many more seasons of peace and tranquility in the wilderness you love.
Right on, you have got the picture of life.
Well said Ken...Enjoy the season!!
Ken, I enjoy your posts, and good luck this season!
thanks again to all but i know what i write is in many of us as i have become close to many of you, it is good to see the old ways have not died. i believe they are alive and well, just very hard to hear and see in this day and age. look with your heart, listen with your soul, believe in what you can not see, stay strong to your beliefs. a little blind mouse taught me that, true story!
Why is it that so many of us can have these same thoughts, but do not have the ability to put them into such wonderful words. Thanks Ken for letting us speak and live through your words..
BOB
Every word endorsed!!!!
Ken,
I for one am glad that you live in those great mountains where the wilderness could ignite your prose.
For those of you who have never wandered miles from a road in the Adirondack mountains, go there. You just might come back a poet like Ken.

Great stuff! God has a way of enlightening us all through nature if we just allow it to happen. The outdoors are my church away from church and I see God in all that exists out there. I have been very blessed to experience his gentle hand through all of the things you mention Ken. The screech of a hawk and his graceful predatory flight. The smell of the evergreens on a fall breeze,....the desert sage in the morning. Too many awe inspiring sunrises and sunsets! I'm glad that I have met like-minded brothers and sisters here who share their passions with me and relate the things we all share and "know" when we are out taking part in the great circle of life. Hope all of you make sacred new memories and connections this hunting season!
Thanks for ringing the tuning fork in my soul through your words Ken. God Bless!
""it is good to see the old ways have not died. i believe they are alive and well, just very hard to hear and see in this day"" No truer words were ever spoken. We all have a lot to learn, with an open heart we will recieve.
again thanks for the kind words, now i need to ask for some advice and direction. i word i hear often and use often is "like minded", their are many of us however i would like to help those who have feelings or witnessed events they can't understand. i have been taught many lessons by the great Creator and his children of the forest, things that most would pass of as coincidence or common events. with the help of Mr. Vic and by using my own feelings i have been able to read many lessons and pass then on to others. i KNOW there are many out there that started of like me and passed off many lessons as coincidence or "HOLY COW" that is weird!! first let me tell you that DO NOT BELIEVE IN COINCIDENCE, things happen for a purpose and many lessons are lost this way. secound if you think there was more to something then there was and you need to sit back, slow down and think about it, the time, the place, what is happening in your life and what you think it might mean. Vic helped me tremendously with this. i had the name of "teacher" hung on me recently and i do not feel deserving however if i could help just ONE person on the good path and see things they did not understand i would feel that i have accomplished something worthy in my life which brings me to my next question. i really want to write a non profit book of lessons that have been sent to me and how i learned to read them and apply them. i would also like like to include simple thoughts and feelings that i believe others feel but do not ask or express them for fear of ridacual. i have always been outspoken, thick skinned and have walked my own way so i kind of laughed at ridacule my whole life. i have often spoke up for others who i know realize there is more yet are to shy to express it.
My question is do you think this is a wise decision or should i just proceed with what i feel and do vocally? i do not fear backlash or non believers as they are not who this is about, it is about the few i hope to help, touch, or guide to looking within themselves and showing them that they are not alone. what do you think????? any feed back at all is greatly welcomed!
Great words, Ken. Thanks :notworthy: :campfire:
Ken, the book would be an excellent idea. You definately have been given the gift of words. Therefore you should use them so they are not lost. Our gifts are meant to be shared, for that is the only way wisdom can be passed to the next generation. May peace go with you brother.
I for one would love to read just such a book :0) Drew
If you can write your words here.....You can write them in a book, My Brother!!!!!
Yea Ken,that is the very reason I went back to a stick and string. It's all about everything else in the hunt.Write it down and you will reflect on it and enjoy it, book or not, it will be enjoyable and beneficial.
nice words Kenny, good stuff.
:) :)

Yessir, and hopefully many deer will be "just out of range".
seems like they are always just a little out of range but that leaves more time to reflect on the good stuff! :campfire:
