Title: A 101 Year Old Man
Post by: Barry Wensel on November 07, 2013, 02:54:00 PM
Last November 19, 2012 I started a thread titled "A 100 Year Old Man". It obviously struck a cord with a lot of folks. Terry Green finally archived it after 15 pages of posts. It's a really interesting thread if you'd like to open it just to get yourself primed for this thread. Basically, it's about a buck that came by me last November that I believed was the oldest deer I'd ever seen. As a matter of fact, I put a lot of thought into that buck and unless I'm wrong, I'm pretty sure which buck he used to be. And if I'm correct he should be 12.5 years old. I recently wrote an article for the PBS magazine about this specific animal but it hasn't been printed yet. Well, this morning our wind was supposed to be out of the WNW. I got to my stand to find it was actually out of the SSE. It was still dark so I gave it about ten minutes to see if it'd switch. It didn't, so I chose another stand about 400 yds. away that would work (one of the perks of having multiple stands pre-hung). At 8:15 movement caught my eye and here he comes. I couldn't believe my eyes but he was less than 25 yds. away. I put the binoculars on him. It was absolutely the same deer from last year. Only this year he looks a hundred and one. He has that same humped spine, the same arthritic hips and the same laborious gait. But what struck me the most was his face and eyes. They made an impression on me last year but even more so this morning. I would have bet a lot of money he wasn't going to make it through last winter. But there he was. Last year he had the remnants of a tiny fork at the top of his left antler. This year his rack has degenerated even more. They are just two maybe seven inch spikes that appear bladed with a bunch of heavy beading around the bases. They also both appear to angle slightly back (which I didn't remember seeing last year). I had a good steady wind from him to me. He got about 3/4 of the way passed me and all of a sudden stopped and looked my way. You're probably not going to believe this but he actually turned his body and faced me and just stared. I raised my hand and saluted him, I was already standing up.  He deserved it. Then he walked away. Yes, it was only a spikehorn but it will undoubtedly also be the highlight of my season.  BW

This is the kind of stuff that one finds no where else but trad gang.
Like one fellow said,I too have an old rescued male dog.
A Border Collie/Golden Retriever mix. To the best of my knowledge Bart is 17, blind, arthritic, sleeps most of the day, but still wags his tail, eats well, has good bladder control, loves to ride in the truck. No way I would do anything but honor him, just like Barry did with this ancient buck.

Both the Old Man Buck and you also Barry deserve a Salute! We love to hunt them but sometimes we just love to be there under the canopy of Gods Creation and breathe the same air the creatures do...There is more enjoyment being a traditional hunter or should I call us "tradition woodsmen" then most people will ever understand!
The smell of Autumn, the foot steps of a deer as it approaches or just to "Be Still and know there is a God" that gives us just a little piece of what He has in store for us as we enter His Holy Kingdom..

We tend to "highlight" our accomplishments in kills and photos of them, but there are so many more memories and stories about our time in the woods that really make it special for us.  Just hearing you tell us again about that old Monarch is a great reminder to us that "there is more"....much more!  Thanks Barry.

But you know B, he probably ran into some of his buddies later on down at the watering hole and told them "yeah was just walking down the trail this morning and I look in this tree and saw this man sitting there that looked about 100 years old. Pretty sure it was the same guy I saw last year".

You should start leaving him a can of cream corn with a shot of good bourbon in it for his arthritis.

Thank you guys for all the nice comments. Apparently the Good Lord was pleased too because he offered me a beautiful buck at 7:56 this morning. The buck shredded a tree for seven straight minutes at 19 yards before he offered me the shot. It was pretty intense but I got it all on film too. Gene took my photos home to crop them or something so you'll have to wait until I get them back. I was very please with him because I passed him up last year on film because he had a giant tumor on his chest. He was pretty much all healed up so I took him this year. Sorry for the teaser. Please stay tuned. I'm whipped. Thanks. BW

I took the day off to try to catch up on things. I dropped my buck off at the meat locker so I'd get their expert opinion on the meat being good with the tumors and all. He field dressed 212 lbs. They didn't call today so hopefully the meat will be fine. As I said, last November he came by me from the same stand at 12 yds. The tumor was about the size of an elongated watermelon. I figured he'd taste bad so I let him walk. All on film too. I think his rack was a little bigger last year. Not sure if it degenerated because of his health issues or what. The tumor is now only about the size of a softball but there's a 4" by 2" scab where the giant tumor was last year. I'm not sure if it burst, he cut it and it drained or what. Anyway, because the tumor was not malignant I nicknamed the buck Benign... even though he be eight (I knew you'd like that one). Yesterday morning he came by all alone cruising for chicks. Rather than on the run at 12 yds. where he was supposed to be he was back in the brush at about 20 yds. At one point he started to angle away. I thought about wheezing but I don't like to wheeze when they're that close. So my intent was to let him get out to about 50 yds. and wheeze him back in if needed. But I wanted the situation to play out on it's own so he'd not come looking for me. A lot of guys wouldn't believe the treestand. It's in a double tree but the west half of the two was apparently struck by lightning and is broken off/hanging down. So I purposely kept the ladder really low to blend in with the break and not be sky lined. I bet my feet aren't much more than ten feet up. I never get busted in the stand so it apparently works in theory. Be right back, I have to call my wife to let her know I didn't fall out of a tree today. bw

So he's angling away and I'm contemplating wheezing when all of a sudden he turns on his own and starts working towards me. There's a single cedar tree about 20 yds. from me. It's about the size of your thigh on the truck. I swung the camera arm around but when I went to zoom it in he kept looking my direction. It's kind of too bad but I kept the camera on wide angle to make sure I would get the shot. In order to zoom it in I'd have to switch my bow from my left hand to my right, play with the camera then switch the bow back. He was only a couple steps from my shooting lane so if he stopped rubbing and started walking thru my shooting lane while I was messing with the camera I'd lose the opportunity and it wasn't worth it to me to risk that. The sad part is he rubbed that tree for seven straight minutes. Every time I'd think about trying to zoom in he'd look my direction and I'd chicken out. By the way, afterwards I went over and filmed the rub. It's one of those that when you see in the woods you'll walk out of your way to look at it. One that you'd say to yourself "I'd like to see the buck that made that one". So after seven minutes of rubbing he took one step backwards and started pawing the ground. Then he brought his tarsals together and peed on them. I held tight knowing what was about to happen. He started walking left to right at 19 yds. As soon as he entered my shooting lane I plugged him. For those interested, I was shooting my 58" Tall Tines that is 61 lbs. at 28", skinny carbon shafts tipped with a 125 gn. steel adapter and a 125 gn. WW. for a total arrow weight of about 630 gns. The shaft hit him a few inches to the right but blasted right through the shoulder and stopped against the far shoulder blade. I could instantly see I broke the shoulder and I got probably two thirds of the arrow in the goodies. I knew he was a goner. As he ran off I saw him break the shaft off at about 50 yds. The fact he rubbed the tree for seven minutes and he was close for ten or twelve minutes while I stood on red alert was pretty intense. I sat down and took it all in. Be right back. bw

Finally I climbed down and walked over to check/ film the rub. Then, I quietly worked my way over to where I saw him break the arrow to get a better read on penetration and blood loss. I'd either proceed or wait depending on what I found. There was plenty of blood and I could see he was falling and spraying. I checked my watch and it'd been 20 minutes ( I shot at 7:56 AM)so I slowly slipped forward. Actually he made it farther than I thought and I found him a little over a hundred yards. The bad news is he died right in the bottom of the dry seepage below the header I was watching. I filmed myself on the initial approach. You know how I keep saying weird stuff always happens to me? Well as I approach him I'm filming myself and I look in the dirt about two feet in front of his nose and I could see something. I said to the camera "what do we have here?" I picked it up and discovered it was one of those aluminum foil helium balloons and it said "Happy Birthday" on it. I'll tell you right now... if it would have said "Get Well Soon" I would have freaked out! Anyway, he's a beautiful buck. I have his one shed from two years ago and his G2 measured 13 5/8" in 2011. Last year I think his G2s were maybe 14". This year they shrunk back some to "only" 13 inches. I'm not sure if it was his age, his health issues or whatever. I don't really care. Then all of a sudden it struck me.. he broke off his left brow tine. I wasn't sure if it was in his death run or in the last day or two but it was a fresh break. I back tracked him and checked at the base of the rub tree and never found anything. Not that I care. For those interested, his main beams are just under 26"; his G2s 13" and almost 13; his G3s 9 3/8". As is with the broken tine he still measured 157 5/8". If I matched the broken tine with the opposing tine (7 2/8") he would have totaled 163 2/8" as a 4x4, which is a really good 4x4. I absolutely would have not been able to get him out without cutting him in half and I really didn't want to do that. I walked to where I could get a single bar on my cell phone and called Gene. He was in a tree 100 miles away and I hated to have him have to come help me. I actually told him that I'd handle it myself. Then my phone buzzed five minutes later. He was on the way. As it ended up we literally had to cut our way in to get the four wheeler close enough. Let me tell you, I... WE are getting too old for this stuff. As I said, I shot him at 7:56 AM and I finally got him out at 5PM. Oh.. one other freaky note.. get this, my friend Daryl Kempher from Michigan called this afternoon. He shot a doe this morning at 12 yds. She only made it 50 yds. As he walked up to the doe, there laying on the ground next to her (he swears to God!!) is another one of those helium balloons... only this one is a big yellow smiley face. Think of the chances of that. Anyway, I'm not smart enough to post photos so I'll try to get Steve-O to post some for you guys. Meanwhile, I'll be back out there in the morning. Best of luck to all. BW

Dandy buck and a great story to go with it! We haven't been seeing anything lately. There is way too much standing corn still in the fields around my place. I'm afraid everything is just bedding and feeding and probably breeding in the cornfields. As much as I hate to hunt in the cold weather, it's starting to look like we're going to have to wait for the cold when the deer need to use our food plots instead of the hundreds of acres of corn in the neighborhood.

Nice to hear some of us Iowans are having some luck anyway.

Great buck Barry!

As far as the 101 year old buck I think that is pretty amazing.

One time on Long Island, in a heavily hunted surburban area I saw this huge buck with just massive spikes that looked really old drinking out of a puddle in the dirt road. All of a sudden he picks his head up and sees a doe and slowly trots at probablt his full speed at this doe barley going faster than a walk. I remember thinking you go get him old guy.

It is still amazing to me that he didn't get killed during the 3 month archery season and the one month shotgun season or killed by a car crossing all the roads. I've never forgotten that deer.

hoping for a 102 year old man next year.

You can see what I mean about his spine. Also his hindquarters look atrophied. If you saw him walk you'd understand. Apparently his hip joints don't articulate because of arthritis and his gait is more of a shuffling. Impressive indeed knowing all he's been through. BW

Kind of makes me feel happy and sad all at the same time.  I don't think the anti's can understand the emotional tie we have with our adversary and how emotional it is to see this kind of stuff.  I think they look at us a demonic killing machines.  I get all sad when I hit a bird or squirrel with my car.  Very cool of you to post this here for all to see Barry.  Congrats on that opportunity to see a true monarch in his latter stage of life.  My only hope is it goes quick for him and by some dumb luck you stumble onto his carcass and can preserve the skull.  A fitting ending for the ole timer of the woods.

Graybarkhunter: I don't have a trail camera photo of him but I do (think) I have video footage of him. In fact, I passed him up twice in 2006, once on film at 18 yds. because I was actively after the B&C buck nicknamed Rocky and I only had one buck tag then. I'm just speculating but the buck I think he used to be I mentioned on page 74 of my book "Once Upon A Tine" in the chapter titled "Rocky XI". Basically, (so you all don't have to buy the book. ha) he was pretty non-typical. He had a basic 4x4 main frame but his bases were "as big around as a can of corn" as the old farmers say. He also had exceptional brow tines as well as a cluster of significant non-typical points near the massive bases. In 2006 I figured he was 5 1/2 yrs. old which (if I'm correct) would make him 12 1/2 this fall. BW

Hey Barry,  what do you do with your camera when you are ready to shoot?  Do you drop it into a pocket or have it on a string or something....??  Sounds like you are cutting it close from filming to shooting.  I ditch the camera in a pocket way before the shot.  I would like to know your technique.  Big congrats on your awesome buck and great story.  You must prefer big 8's.
Title: Re: A 101 Year Old Man
Post by: Barry Wensel on November 17, 2013, 10:31:00 AM
I use one of those little screw-in camera arms. Gene bought a bunch of them if you need one. I basically mount it in the tree next to me. I prefer it on my right side since I can hold my bow in my left and operate the camera with my right. But sometimes, as in this case, the tree configuration demands mounting the arm on my left. I point the camera towards where I think my primary shot will be and zoom it out to wide angle to cover the most area. When I see a deer coming I immediately turn the camera on. If it's a non-shooter I'll just film the deer. If it's a shooter I try to get at least a little footage of him, then swing the camera to where I think the shot will take place. Then I zoom it in to "normal eye" or keep it at wide angle to cover the most area. Filming it all yourself is tough. A separate cameraman will always produce the best footage where he can adapt accordingly as things transpire. But the negative is twice the bulk in the tree, twice the movement, twice the scent, etc. I'm hunting primarily and filming secondarily so I just adapt accordingly as much as I can. If I get it great, if not.. too bad. BW
