another grim reminder that safety is always first; even if it means wearing that the harness will impede in shooting at certain angles...not saying that that is what happened here or anything, but that it(the impeding of shooting) is a common excuse i hear from a lot guys i talk to...my prayers go out to the family and friends of this story. I know of few deaths already from treestand falls, and would rather not hear any more, please my friends, be safe and wear the harness or hunt from the ground.

That is a really sad story.

I don't know what the circumstances were surrounding his fall, but it just seems like the easiest lessons are the hardest to learn sometimes.  I've been hunting from tree stands for years, and other than always wearing a harness, I've never really thought about the ramifications of falling out of a tree until this year.  It's serious business and as this story painfully illustrates, not planning for a fall could be the worst, and last mistake you make.

In addition to hunting, I also enjoy riding motorcycles.  There is a saying: "dress for the crash, not the ride"... I think this applies to hunting from a tree stand, too.

I'm very safety cautious always wearing my harness but every year we hear more and more stories of people falling.  There will be a day when I will no longer go up a tree (maybe when I have kids of my own).

Dave is right. One of the reasons I posted this is that I forgot mine the other day, and was in a hurry, and was gonna go without. He dug out an extra and insisted I wear it. Glad for that. Thanks, buddy! Now, the borrowed ghillie suit DID cost me a slam dunk on a doe! Be kind to lefties and trim both arms, fellas! Haha.
