I took a week off again this year to hunt (we won't talk about what happened to last year's vacation.) I was hoping to catch the Iowa pre-rut festivities. Looks like things were heating up over the weekend. Had to move my Mom into a new place yesterday which was okay. Today it has rained all day. Supposed to continue into tomorrow morning.
Freakin rain.
I have good rain gear, and I don't mind sitting in the rain, but I don't want to chance losing an animal with a washed out blood trail.
Oh well, supposed to clear up a little by tomorrow afternoon. Guess I'll fling a few in the basement while I wait.
Freakin rain. :banghead:
We had out share, but its sure is dry now. Can hear deer coming from a mile away, but can't sneak up on them to save your life.
Where I hunt in southern Ontario, just off Lake Huron, I had a solid week of high winds, rain, hail, and sleet. Got out three times in a week and got soaked twice.
We did find the deer though.
Day after, actually hrs after a storm deer are on the move, should be good there today.
In Southern Mn we have 6" of fresh snow on the ground. Took a walk around my yard this morning, looks like a cattle yard from all the deer tracks. it appears 2 or more bucks were tearing it up sparring.
SUNSHINE!!!!!
:archer2:
Alright. Best of luck. I hope you have pics and a great story to add this evening.
good luck!! sat out in the rain today but alas no luck and no arrows loosed...Best of luck to you!!
I feel your pain Brother.
Rained me out here today and more coming during the wk. Won't never get that corn behind me cut at this rate.
"Freakin Rain".....where have I heard that before? :biglaugh: Seems like that plagues us on occasion eh Dave? The next four days are lookin' good buddy! Hope to be giving a big boy a ride to your house in the back of my truck here soon! Hope you and yours are getting some shots as well.
Agreed, the last 2 Saturdays have been soggy. On one Sat. morning, I went into the woods before sunrise. Needed my headlamp and trail makers to get to my ground blind. Then had to sit in a down pour till daylite to find my way out...Freakin Rain
Its been raining or snowing here for the last month solid, except for a couple days...at work of course.
Eric
If you waited for a dry day in western Washington to hunt you would miss the season most years, just get out there and hunt ... blood lasts longer than you think in the rain unless it's a gully washer. :archer2:
Us California hunters would die to have a day of rain during deer season. It would sure beat the 106 degree highs we end up with during the July season and first part of August season.
Elkken is right about blood. It doesn't wash away as easily as most people think. I grew up hunting some rainy weather in Oregon and never had a problem following a blood trail.
Longbow 917, we do have a history with that don't we!
Well it was a great afternoon to be in the woods. Saw Several small bucks. Had a real nice 8 point (140-145) come in to a scent lure. Unfortunately he stopped 10 yards directly BEHIND the tree my stand was in. No way I could get a shot. He walked into some brush and kept going. I waited a couple minutes and rattled. Within minutes here came a big 9. He got to about 25 yards and stopped facing me straight on. Too far, bad angle. Then he turned and went after a smaller buck that came by with a doe. Never saw him again.
Oh well, I guess I get to go hunting again. :goldtooth:
Dang Dave, that sounds like a GREAT afternoon....gives me hope for the next four days. Hopefully you can dump one of them buggers here soon!
Yeah, the timing feels good. The bucks are really responding to rattling right now, probably the best I've seen for years.
I've got federal court tomorrow morning for a sentencing, then it's back to a tree for several days. The weather even sounds good through the weekend.
Holler if you need help dragging.
