Title: 3 piece longbows
Post by: Dave Thaxton on November 05, 2013, 03:59:00 PM
I've got the hankerin for a 3 pc LB. I have looked at websites, searched here, there and everywhere. There are some fine craftmen builing these bows. Would y'all please indulge me with some pics? Field pictures would be great.Looking at wood combos and really want to zero in on riser and grip configurations. Low to low medium is my preference. So...if you have pics how about posting them up? Thanks!

Don't have pictures but shot the new Tall Tines 3 piece longbow and it was very nice.  No hand shock, very quite and quick.  Some pictures on  New TallTines "StickFlinger" Hybrid Longbow

The Sarrel's Blue Ridge is a beautiful bow that offers high performance.  Bob and Zach are great to deal with, and I believe I saw today that they're running a big sale!

I have a caribow silverfox and a dryad Orion. Love both of them. I'll try to get some pictures up.

My Bigfoot Sasquatch from Kirk is my go to bow. He will build the exact grip you want. I sent him a riser to copy. Good luck, many choices.

There are many great choices out there.  For me the ultimate 3pc is my Leon Stewart Slammer.  I will pick the Slammer every time over the likes of A&H, Dryad, several others, even my Habu!  With the 3pc Slammer Leon has built a bow that ticks the boxes in every single category, and compromises nowhere.  It is fast and flat shooting at 10gpp, yet near as quiet as a Hill bow and that is no exaggeration, looks that kill and craftsmanship at the top of the heap.  Leon builds his bows to be the perfect hunting bow, the ultimate hunting companion.  I strongly suggest you look into them and/or call him.  He can make you one from mild to wild.  Mine is the one bow I will not sell, never.

Mine is 68" 55@29 cocobolo dymondwood riser with osage stripes, olive ash back, curly maple belly, sheep horn tips.  He can make em any length you want.  I like my long one because it shoots like a target bow.  Nail driver.

Good luck in your quest!

Dave, check out a Thunderhorn. Fanstastic shooter. I also really like the heavy Micarta in my riser. Makes the light weight of it much more stable during your shot.

Here's a 3 pc that looks like a one piece for you.

Macassar ebony & Brazilian walnut

Dave, I got some questions for you.

1) Do you want a hybrid looking longbow when strung? or a D shape when strung?

2) Aside from a low grip; what style of riser are you more interested? A recurve riser look? A minimal / small riser look?

Post by: Dave Thaxton on November 06, 2013, 01:07:00 PM
Again, thanks a lot fellows. Beautiful bows!!

joe, in my minds eye the picture is of a D shape when strung with a minimal, shorter riser with a grip that "fills" my hand. Can you picture it?

But after seeing the bows posted I really am not sure anymore...

Never shot one, but I have always like the look of the Pronghorn 3pc longbows. That Toelke back a few posts is kind'a nice also!

Dave, I can picture it   :)

Aside from the previous pics and being now 'not sure' .......

Based on your response and my limited experience / hands on experience.....I have some recommendations.

Horne's Combo Hunter
Pronghorn
Toelke Lynx *

*Thumb rest is standard but can be removed

These are not in any order!

fine print........If you open the scope to hybrid looking longbows; my list will be added to.

Bob Lee makes a good 3 piece longbow as well and can do the grip any way you would like. I have mine low grip.

Stotler gamegetter is a 3pce looking like a one piece. its made as a one piece and cut into 3, then has the ferrules installed.

nice bow, mines 72@ 28. 63" really smooth and easy to shoot well.

it doesnt seem much faster than my 59@28 caribow slynx through (with the same 700gr arrows)

Eagle wing talon
Habu vyperkahn
Zipper
Hill country bobcat

Soooo many good ones out there.  Some standard grips but most will do whatever you want. For true custom LB that you can have built your way it is tough to beat an eagle wing!! Steve is great to work with and has some of the highest performance bows with the best quality woods I have ever seen

I'm pretty fond of my Pronghorn.  It treats me nicely.

I've been looking real hard at Timber Ghost for a short R/D longbow. I'm going to try to get over his way to see if I'd like the 3 pc. or 1 pc. better, but Guru did a review of his 3 pc. that has me SERIOUSLY considering one!

I'll take some better pictures of my new Stalker Coyote longbow today and post them. South makes an incredible bow.

This is one like mine.
