Title: Do coyotes chase bears off food?
Post by: Gordy on September 10, 2007, 02:52:00 PM
Before bear season we had two nice bears with a third dandy bear making regular appearances at our site.

After the first weekend of season, we've seen nothing but coyotes, foxes and coons.....and mink, martens and a skunk  ;)   Even caught 3 coyote at a time at the site on the trail-cam.

We picked off one coyote this weekend, but that didn't deter the others'.

WWTGD ?

depends on how aggressive both the coyotes and the bear are.

I have seen a coyote chase a large black bear off a dead deer but the bear had his fill and i think was annoyed with the coyote rushing in and nipping at his rear end constantly.

Maybe something else pushed them out of the area?

If it makes any difference I once watched a spike
buck chase a bear from a food pile. Obviously the deer didn`t scare the bear, but he did pester him
until he left from what I believe was frustration.

The deer would snort loudly and jump back and this would cause the bear to run a short distance, survey the area and then cautiously sneak back in to eat apples. Then the process would start over.

I had no bear tag, and did not have permission to shoot bucks on the property I was on, so I simply enjoyed the show.

I would have no doubt that yotes could gang up and "pester" a bear away.
