Title: GA Rabbit hunt
Post by: Nattybumppo on November 04, 2013, 02:04:00 PM
OK...

I've got land and dogs. Would anyone want to do a small game hunt in GA come January?

I've got primitive camping if people want to camp and we have tons of squirrels and a good many rabbits. Good dogs and I'd like to have a good time.

Sam- I'm 15 miles from you in Putnam Co.

Edge and MCNSC- Middle GA between Atlanta and Augusta. If enough people want to I'll open it up and we'll throw a little cookout and put together a shoot as well.

I'll be going thru to FL to guide hog hunters for the winter.
Depending on the date, I would be interested.

My family has a lease in Atkinson county between Pearson and homerville. Ill actually be there again next weekend.

Location sounds great. What about the date? I will be going to the Alafia Rendezvous from Jan. 15 thru 25th. But if timing is right, I want in. Natty, we are too close not to know each other. What part of the county?

What does everyone think of the weekend of 1/4?

Sam- Not sure at all why we haven't met. I live off Harmony Rd between 441 and 44.

Sam if you are over in Eatonton give me a shout out. I have been sitting home the last two months trying to get over this shoulder surgery and it looks like I will be here another month or so unless the doc decides to redo the surgery Friday due to some infection. Natty I live just off 441 north of Eatonton. Probably just a couple miles from you.

EDIT: ill be on duty the fourth but plan on taking off that day. Is this going to be a one day event? Is there a possibility on camping the night before? Local primitive camping would be great.

I'd be up for it. I'm down that way pretty regular.

Alright guys I guess this is actually going to take shape!

Let's settle it down for 1/4. I'll get with my buddies and make sure they are there to run the dogs.

If you want to camp you are more than welcome. You can come in on the 3rd and stay till the 5th with no issues at all. I do have a cabin but no power, no running water, etc. It is tight though. We have an outhouse there. But you are welcome to pitch tents or etc. Big campers really can't get down to the area but small ones and pop ups have no issues.

We'll plan on a big lunch on Saturday and if enough of you want to camp we can work up dinners for Friday and Saturday.

Hey consider me game!

I have a small tent, that will be perfectly fine for me. Ill bring a cooler of deer meat and fish to help with meals. Possibly some grouper fillets.

Is there anything else we could help with? Cups, plates, etc ?

If any of you that are coming have a Spot 360 hunting chair you could bring I would love to see one and try it out.  I know of no other way I would be able to check one out short of ordering one and I don't want to do that just yet.

Thanks!

Directions will be sent out on Jan 1. For planning purposes use Eatonton, GA as the map location. We're about 10 miles +/- from there.

Sam asked about food. So guys let me know. If nothing else or no one else steps up we will have hamburgers and hot dogs on Saturday lunch.

Awesome man!!!

OK... Just for those who have never done this before I'll provide a little list of what you need and want to bring.

Food!! Everyone bring something to share.
Water- You will be walking a good bit.
Chaps- Briars... Just remember Brer Rabbit.
Arrows- Lots of them...
Points- We have been shooting field tips but I know a lot of guys who shoot broadheads and judos and blunts.

Camping is available I just need to know who wants to come on Friday so I can be there.

And guys... It's wet. I mean it's flat flooded this weekend. Which is good for us. It'll concentrate the rabbits. But bring mud boots.

I had generally requested before if anyone in attendance could bring a SPOT 360 chair that I would be able to look at.  So I just wanted to send out this reminder once again.

Thanks!!!

Terry had one at the Wild Things hog hunt. I'm not sure if he's going to be here or not. I don't have one. All I use is the hammock seat that I buy from Simply Traditional.

Jerry- Looking forward to seeing you and Luke. Been awhile. Always enjoy sharing a camp fire with you guys.

Alright guys here's the deal. 7:30 AM on Jan 4th we will be meeting at the Ingles on HWY 441 and HWY 16 in Eatonton, GA. My club is approximately 10 mins from there.

If you can't make the 7:30 deadline the directions to the club are as follows:

HWY 441 is a bypass around Eatonton GA. Coming From milledgeville, GA (or south) there is HWY 129 and 44 first where Wal MArt is. Next Road is Glennwood Springs RD. Turn left onto it. When the yellow lines stop (after you cross 2 bridges) look right and you will see my gate. There's a bumper sticker above it stating Murder Creek Bowhunters.

Coming from the north (I-20, Madison, Athens)you will come to A redlight right when you get into eatonton with a gas station on your right. Next light is HWY 16 and Ingles will be on the right. The next light is Glennwood Springs. Turn Right. Same thing... Go to the yellow lines stop. Look right....

Needs- Everyone bring some food and drinks to share.

Bring a chair.

it's going to be good guys. WE will have a fun time.

Thanks Jerry!

Guys it rained all night last night and is still drizzling here today. That's fine for the rabbit hunting but bring MUD BOOTS!!! Or water proof boots. Along with your chaps or double front carhartt's. We've got plenty of parking where it won't matter and I will be carrying you guys back to the hunt on a trailer and polaris ranger. So no need to worry about getting stuck and etc.

But I do have to ask...

How many times can a group of archers shoot at one rabbit...

James,

Thanks so much for organizing and hosting this hunt.

I don't know about other folks, but an archery hunt for rabbits over a pack of dogs is a rare experience for me.  Thanks for the opportunity to share it with my two boys and a great group of guys.

We had a great time!

...and to answer your question I think the count on that last "wascally wabbit" was rabbit 9, archers 0.    :archer:

I went and had a great time. James was a gracious host and made this a very nice outing. I got to meet some new friends and say hello to some old ones. My personal score was 2, 1, and 0. That is, 2 rabbits seen, 1 shot taken, 0 hits. This is the first time I have hunted rabbits with a bow. Now, I understand why some of the TG members are so enthusiastic about bowhunting for them.

Justin and I had a great time yesterday as well.  Thanks again to James and William.  Justin was smiling all the way home.  Of course he had to rub it in all the way home about him being 13 and making the only kill of the day and how I missed twice!!! At least he offered me some shooting lessons.  We  made a great memory yesterday!!

He is not afraid to sling those arrows at a running bunny!  It was fun to hang with him as he has a great attitude.

That was really fun and I am glad I made the 3 hour drive.  I just had to see how guys hunt rabbits with dogs and now I know.  It is possible.

Thanks,
James

I want to thank everyone for coming. It was truly a pleasure. I've read so many of you on here and other forums and it was truly an honor to have you at my place. And it was good to see Jerry and Steve again. I was very proud to be there when Justin shot his rabbit and got one up on his old man. Lee you better find some more rabbits to get even...

JohnHV- William and I counted 12 shots on that ONE rabbit. With no one so much as cutting a hair...

I hope this works but it's a slideshow of all the pictures that Steve posted and mine (hope you don't mind Steve).

http://s267.photobucket.com/user/celticfisherman/slideshow/rabbit%20hunt%20trad

I'm already planning next years hunt so stay tuned.

And let me add something personal here. While I am so pleased everyone had fun I learned SO MUCH from all of you. Everyone there was so willing to share tips, tactics, form, everything about trad that it was truly one of the greatest 1 day hunting experiences I have ever had.
