BCY has done it again. They have taken the best HMPE (SK90 Dyneema) and blended it with just enough Vectran (17%) to make their best string material even better.
They are calling it "BCY-X". It wasn't going to be unveiled until the 2014 ATA show, but it's just hard to keep something this good under wraps. Two of the top wheel companies have already switched to it--one after only a week of shooting.
I've had a sample for maybe a month. Wasn't talking about it for a couple of reasons: One, it wasn't going to be available until next year; and two, I wanted to get some feedback on it.
The feedback so far has been outstanding--on both sides of the sport. Extremely stable--this stuff has practically no stretch/creep once shot in, even in higher temps. Extremely durable--the highest grade of Dyneema available, with a low percentage of Vectran. Reports so far have said it's also a very quiet material--quieter than 8190.
The test strings I've sent out were NOT ultra-low strand counts with anything extra wound in or done to them. They were 18-20 strands, endless and flemish. The flemish have the loops padded out with B-55, as I do with any HMPE flemish string. That's it. No bells and whistles, no smoke and mirrors.
I think this new material is going to knock some of the older ones off the shelf--just won't be a need for them.
It has a very small diameter--just a hair larger than 8190--so even with 18-20 strands, it's still a small diameter string.
Very versitle--with the smaller strands, the strand count with varying draw weights isn't so critical--18-20 stands should be good for 35-75 pound draw weights.
Color selection is still limited--all I have on hand right now is black, but I'll be stocking up on colors soon.

Sounds interesting Chad. I am willing to be a test subject if you want to send me a string :)
Great, I'd like to buy a small spool to try when it becomes available..
I really like 8190 ..
Thanks for the heads up, and thanks again for the starter care package! Sounds like a winner for sure.
I thought when 8190 came out "This is it--it can't get any better!" I was wrong...
That's one of the great things about BCY...no matter how good it gets, it's never good enough. Always working to improve.
Pat, shoot me a p.m. and I'll see what I can do. Any particular color? The entire line of solid colors should be avaiable in a few weeks--most are ready now. Price is the same as 8190.
I will be trying some when my 8190 runs out or low.Thank you for the update I was going to order some more 8190 in about a month.I think I will hold off on getting anymore string material.I have been real happy with 8190,but now something new!
you've piqued my curiosity, chad - i'll hafta git a short spool of that stuff and check it out. can it be had with low or no wax, like bcy d'02?
I've always ordered all of my material "low wax" from BCY--done it that way for years. Don't see any reason you can't get the X with low wax.
I really liked 8190, but the X is even better. It basically combines the best of 450+/452X and 8190 in one material.
cool, thanx chad!
Hey Chad,
Maybe it's just me or my 'puter but the link to your website goes to a non-functioning page.

Thanks for the info Chad. Sounds like a great material.

I don't think it's just you --

was gonna contact you last month when I heard about it...any sample spools for purchase as they wouldn't deal to me since Im not big enough string maker?
Something is goofed up with the link to my site here--could be due to some updates. Just type in "www.recurves.com" and it will take you there, although I don't have any info. on 8190 up just yet. Will try to get on that soon.
I'll see how fast I can get some 1/8# spools on hand.
Chad
Link to my site is fixed, and I have some 1/8# spools of 8190 coming--should have them next week.
Educate me - why would you guys prefer your bowstrings with low or no wax?
I like to add my own wax, especially when making a Flemish string. Wax from the factory usually absorbs dye and can be messy if there is too much.
cool....something new to try...
I don't have it on my site yet, but you can order a string...if you like black. Should have at least a couple more colors coming this week.
Chad
Hey Chad, your website says your not taking any orders until after NASP nationals, web says they were 5/13, unless your talking about next year.
Are the 1/8# spools for resale or your use only?
Thanks, Gery
Chad, The 8190 you sent me works great.....18 Triple seams to work the best.
Thanks again Chad
Kat, that was last year. After that my mom had some serious health problems and I never got around to changing my site--will try to get that done this week.
I will have some 1/8# spools for resale--can get 1/4# spools also.
DD, I really like the 8190--the X isn't a big leap, but it is an improvement. Glad you like it!
Should have some 1/8# spools in the shop this week--they were shipped to me today.
Thanks Chad, PM sent. Hope your mom is doing well.
Thanks! Mom is doing great the last month or so--she's defying the docs once again. Even dressed up for a Halloween contest at the nursing home and won! Took her out to eat and shopping afterward, she wore her costume the whole time--we had a ball.
If you don't hear back from me by the end of the week, please remind me--got several folks asking, and I don't trust myself to remember.
Got some BCY-X in 1/8# spools. Anyone interested, just shoot me a pm or e-mail. Also uncovered a few 1/8# spools of Dynaflight '10 that I'll let go at a bargain.
Chad
Sounds great! Just wondering what is the breaking strength per strand? I know your not a fan of skinny strings but just curious. Thanks.
Chad, I got some "X" in the mail last week as well. Gonna give her a go soon.
CTT
Think you'll really like it TT. If you make it to K-Zoo, be sure to stop by.
LC, it's going to be about the same as 8190...but I can't remember what that is either! Sorry...I'll try to find out Monday. I want to say 70 or 90 pounds per strand--very small strand--but I need to check to be sure.
