Title: New guy. Arrow bow setup questions.
Post by: kagross on October 31, 2013, 08:00:00 AM
Hello everyone,
Just got my first real traditional bow last night.  It's a Bear Alaskan, pre '59 I think (leather handle, no medallion, grey glass), 48#@28".  I pull about 26", and my compound arrows go 25.5".  I'm looking to shoot for fun, and if all goes well maybe hunt with it.  I currently am in the middle of the season here with my modern bows, so I'll probably wait til after the season to get started with the Alaskan.

Anyway, the string looks good, but maybe a newer string would be in order, so if someone could reccomend a source (other than ****), that would be great.
What should be a good starting point for brace height?  I can adjust after that.
I have some carbon arrows that might work, not sure the spine, but they're the lighest ones Carbon Express makes (they're marked 250, but that's not the spine, since their 350 and up are stiffer).  I plan to start with them full length, so my question is: what ferrule glue do you use that you can remove and re-install with carbons?  Can you use hot-melt with carbons?  For my compounds, I just cut them and adjust the bow, point, rest etc.
I have some 5" feathers, so I can fletch up 3 or 4, leave one bare, and get shooting/tuning.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Bare shaft first, make your cuts from the nock end, its a lot easier. I use 2 part apoxy with carbons. Any of the Sponsors on this sight are good choices for ordering strings, or anything else.

Thanks.   I knew I could cut the nock end, but was thinking that I might want brass inserts later.  Or maybe I should just start with brass?

I think those 250s will be too stiff for a low 40s bow.  CE makes 150s, 90s and I think even 70s now.  You will be pulling around 43 or 44# at a 26" inch draw.  I shoot 150s out of my low 50s bows.
