A few years ago I needed a new climber and now have myself a nice packing lone wolf hand climber.
The next thing I wanted to do was use a nice hang on with climbing sticks. To hunt the areas I want that don't have good trees for climbing stand. I now hunt around 10-13ft. And what I'm wondering is a good set up that is light and packs well together and is efficient at setting up. I'm thinking of the lone wolf or muddy sticks and what ever stand. Just so the platform is not too small as I have big feet. This will be used for state land. Put it up and take down same day type of deal.
Also wondering how many stick I will need to out me around the heights I'm looking at hunting. Thanks guys
I would recommend having your climbing sticks extend above the height of your stand platform. Always like to step down onto stand rather than stepping up into it. Good luck and be safe.
I agree Bill, if I set out a permanent stand that is how I set up up. Much safer thanks
3 Sticks should be plenty! I usually use 3 sticks to get me around 12 ft.
Lone wolf alpha loc on and three lone wolf sticks.
Not the mini sticks. BTW, get the easy hang hook also.
Lone wolf fixed stand, and two lone wolf climbing sticks, but I don't mind stepping up to the stand if I have to. As long as the lower leaf canopy is still up, there is no need to go very high, and fI only go up 8-12 feet, I have found that is all that is necessary for Jersey deer, and they do look up !
P.S, I must also say that I do mostly use my Loc-On Light, as it only weighs 7lbs. I also must say, I mostly stalk with said set up on my back, and if I find a good ambush spot with good sign, I go up a tree.
What's the weights of the sticks and stand together?
With the lite stand, I think it's 15 pounds, stand being 7 and 3 sticks being 8 pounds. With the 3 standard sticks, I can get up to around 15 or 16 ft, I'm on the tall side though so I can stretch out the sticks. With practice, you can have the stand up and be in it ready to hunt in under 10 minutes with very little if any noise.
I would guess it at around 10 pounds, I also hang my pack with the safari tuff quiver from the stand, it's real easy to move around and take the whole thing off if need be.
Add a strap extension to the first stick and you can get away with 2-32" sticks
If you decide to go with the Lone Wolf hang on I second the easy hang hook. Makes for a real easy setup.
Recommend the rubber bungees that Bass Pro sells to secure the sticks to the stand. Simple and quiet.
I carry the straps and a silky saw on a Kifaru longpocket straped to the underside of the seat.
Not sure of the total weight but quiet and organized.
With that easy hang you guys speak of, you just attach that to the the easy hang and your stand goes to it and you climb in? Or does that just hold he stand to the tree so you can strap it on easier? Thanks guys
Lone wolf hang on (the alpha not the assault, the assault is a small platform). The lone wolf offers incredible flexibility with its adjustments and batwing bracket. Best stand on the market IMO.
The lone wolf sticks are light and work great. I would get the 3 pack of sticks and you can get up to 15 feet safely or just use 2 of them.
I put up and take down each sit and this system is best I have found. Although I prefer gorilla steel sticks for the double rung and easier on the hands. The lone wolf sticks are the lightest I've used.
Also if you are going to put up and take down all the time its a good idea to use a good harness and a good lineman belt to keep you safe.
I concur on the lone wolf full size stand, I use 4 sticks as it allows me to get up higher if I need to as we'll as be able to step down onto the stand. If you use the ez hang bracket (which I do) you set that up, attach your stand to it and then use a second strap to tighten it all up. I use this system when not using the hand climber. They are both expensive but in my opinion worth it.
Thanks very much guys!
I am using a hang-on more and more with my trad gear. For me I like the Lone Wolf Assault for my walkin hunting. I will use the Alpha for the ones I leave up. For me I can get as high as I want with three sticks and one Cranford step. The easy hanger might work well for straight trees but not as much if the tree is angled. Something to consider.
