BLAM!!! you step on a snake.
I sat till 11:00 this morning with no action other than a bunch of Turkeys coming through. I started out and stepped on this rascal. I`m almost sure its a Coral snake but could be a scarlet King. Good for raising the heart rate either way.RC

that's a coral snake. good sized one too.
Red then yellow will kill a fellow.
yep coral....red touches yellow, kill a fellow....red touches black, friend of jack....learned that in scouts 30 years ago, easy way to identify the two
posting at same time...
Dang Robert, glad he didn't get you!!
While it would increase my heart rate as well, it might also make me go home for some clean drawers...lol
I'm glad to saw him in time to avoid any problems.
God bless,Mudd
Wow, that will get your heart rate up!
If that didn't hurt me, it would certainly make me hurt myself... :saywhat:
Dang! That's a big coral snake.
What would that look like backed on a bow? LF
My dad taught me a similar rhyme, even though we live in MI and don't get coral snakes up here;
"Red and yellow hurt a fellow - red and black, venom lack". I understand the coral snake has to get a small section of skin in his mouth to bite as their mouths don't open like a pit viper's do. As Ric O'Shay said, he wouldn't have to hurt me - I'd hurt myself probably bouncing off one of our satellites before coming back down hard.
I've only seen one in the woods at Tosohatchee WMA close to Orlands. Took his picture (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/Iflytrout/Pictures/CoralSnakez.jpg)
That one is a big one you saw..I've heard but don't know for sure that their mouth is so small they can't actually stike you, but have to bite you and chew like in place such as the loose meat between you thumb and first finger.
I read that somewhere a long time ago don't know if true or not.
That just SUCKS!!!! One good reason to live in NE Ohio. No chiggers, few ticks and really no poisonous snakes. I hunt north central PA though and have seen some Jim Dandy Timber rattlers. Even found a couple dens in late turkey season and they were laying everywhere around that den.
Sure ruined that morning.
Dave
Yep, that's a nice coral snake. You're pretty safe with one of those. They are rear fanged, so they really have to chew on you. They're not aggressive, either. I hope you let him go about his business.
thats a big one. Coral snakes have a black nose...I can never remember the rhyme. I have caught them and relocated them, water moccasins are the ones I hate to run across
He looks "out of business" to me! :)
I don't think RC is big on letting snakes "continue with their day..."
the only good snake is a DEAD ONE!!!! :scared:
He is lucky he didn't feel the wrath of the Texas Flood

Buddy, I'm with you on that one.
I'll take skeeters :notworthy: :notworthy:
Thats only the second one of those I have ever seen. I flipped him out of the way with my bow tip. Had it been a rattler or cottonmouth he would not have made it.RC

But Mudd, it ain't Saturday!
"Red on yellow, poison fellow; red on black, safe from attack."
From Wiki. jim
always told red touches yellow means you're a dead fellow.
Very cool find as long as you remain safe. Keep your eyes out.
OK, way too slow with that, gotta read further before I post :readit:

Mebbe we should join the 21st century. Most snakes out there are our friends, eating varmints and pests.
Dang RC!
That's a dandy. I guess I'll have to look out for those, the rattlers, and cotton mouths in January WHILE I'm looking for hogs! I don't care who you are, or if your not afraid of them. That first initial moment you realize what your looking at is a snake, you WILL skip a beat!
To me, copperheads are the most aggressive, scary suckers. Cottonmouths usually try to hit the water. Never seen a coral snake in the wild. Thanks RC.
Wow! the only N American venomous snake I have not seen. They are here in NC but are somewhat reclusive. The likelihood of being bitten is pretty rare. I have also heard the red touch black rhyme used to remember which snake is poisonous and that they have to chew to break the skin. They are so deadly because their venom works on the nervous system like the cobra's.
That thing gives me the hebejebe's just seeing the picture! Not into snakes at all.
Big coral snake there. Cool weather will fool you, we've killed cottonmouths in/around our duck blind in December/January.
Beautiful snake, thanks for sharing.
I used to see them fairly regularly when I was growing up in Florida. Because we told her they don't strike, my mother killed one with her high heel on her way to a wedding.
I would love to get the skins of a couple of big ones for bow backing. Don't have them here in Delaware.
I'd have boots on up to my ears!!!! Bill
Yeppers, would have to Change the Huggies after THAT!! YIKES!! :scared: :scared: I live by the Old Addage, "The Only GOOD Snake is a DEAD SNAKE!!"
No doubt, coral snake!
Bisch
Beautiful snake. It amazes me at the big tough bowhunters that are scared of such a neat animal
nomansland4404, not all "big tough bowhunters" are created equal :)
I grew up outside Detroit and have never seen the only poisonous snake in Michigan. I used to play with the non-poisonous ones, letting garter snakes crawl up my sleeves, etc. Then, for some unknown reason, I developed a phobia of snakes. There is simply no way I could touch one now.
I spent some time at Fort Sill OK, and Fort Hood TX and developed a healthy respect for their rattlers. St Louis, MO taught me to respect copperheads and water moccasins.
The only snake I have killed was a copperhead in our fireplace woodpile. He scarred the snot out of me and got his head smashed before I even thought about it. I will help a snake across a road to keep it from being run over if I can find a stick long enough.
I can approach a snake if I see it well in advance, but if I look down and see I'm standing on, or about to be stepping on a snake, it's either heart attack time or new world record long jump time.
For some it's heights, for some spiders, for me it's snakes. Just can't help it.
They are fairly common on Central Florida WMAs. I associate them with sand pine areas. Cool snakes. I sold a big one to Ross Allen's Reptile Institute at Silver Springs Attraction when I was a kid. It was right at 42 inches. Average is around 36.
I had never heard the rhymes. I'm glad to know them!
I always heard red and yellow kill a fellow; red and black friend of Jack.
am originally from africa, mambas, cobras and puff adders galore, had them in the house, on the vines around the house, and all over the bush- saw them very regularly, and the only times i have ever been bitten, was when i was messing with them. they only bite in defence!!
They play a critical role in the eco system. sad to say, but the attitude of "kill everything we find inconvenient" is what has led us into this environmental pickle we find ourselves in today.
walk around them. or do as RC did just flip them out of the way- we really dont need to kill everything we see , just 'cos we can. unless of course yer gonna eat it.
by the way, they are pretty good eating- eaten a few in my time!!
biggest snakes i ever caught was a "mozambique spitting cobra" that was about 3.5 meters-approx- never measured him!!!- just got him out of the living quarters a.s.a.p.
and a python- that i did measure at over 5 meters- trying to eat a domestic goat- it was heavy- took 3 of us to carry it, and keep it from coiling up on one of us.
i say let em go on their way!!
Makes me love Michigan!
That's the way I always heard the rhyme, Gregg. I grew up on an old sand hill a bit south of Palatka, and just as you said, we saw quite a few coral snakes. I sure hope they get Silver Springs back to what it was when Ross Allen ran it.
I wont go out of my way to kill one, just for the reason it is what it is. Dont get me wrong, if We can avoid each other, all the better for it. If not, IT is Toast!
RC, you post more pics of snakes you have run across than anybody on trad gang. Glad you haven't gotten hurt.
