Well I keep seeing them heck; launched and arrow at one that kept taunting me the other night. Missed by a hare.
But it got me thinking we should start putting out feelers for next years stomp. It maybe almost Feb before I can do it. I don't know what I will cook this year. Last years elk is almost gone and no deer down yet. Might have to scoop up some road kill and make stew.
So who is interested this year?
OK so 1 Feb meeting at my place around 0800hrs or 8 am.
If I can get the time off I'll be there this year. Roadkill stew..
(Maybe we can order out for lunch tho..?) :p
I'll bring venison chilli.I'm in wouldn't miss it for the world. Man Paul where is your sence of adventure no road kill for Paul.
I'd sure be interested in coming up. I tried last year, and didn't make it up for some reason I can't remember. Sounds like you had a great time.
Bryan it is a great time. Heck we even shot at some last year. I have seen a bunch hopping around this year. I may try and find some other areas. But the other one has held a bunch of rabbits in the past though.
My "sense of adventure" has... matured a bit Bob.
If it's fresh roadkill that would be ok, just don't want any that's passed it's expiration date.
(Though, as I think on it," expiration date " could just be the day it became roadkill..?" ;)
I'm in. Last year was a blast!!!
Where is this? I understand the when is still up in the air... I'm a recent transfer to the state, I'm in Derby... a suburb of Wichita...
This sounds like a lot of fun!
It looks like Riley Kansas is 300 miles, 4 1/2 hours from Oklahoma City. How much is a 2-3 day small game out of state bow hunting license for Kansas?
Jeff I live in Douglass about 14 miles east of you and when the time comes if you want to convoy up we can meet and head up you won't regret it we have a great time. Well except Paul won't eat road kill.
No short term license in Kansas. A yearly Non-Resident hunting license is 72.50.
Hope to make it this year. I'm sure it will be a blast.
bretto
Jeff I live in Riley which is north of Fort Riley. We hunt south of Clay Center on public lands on the northern end of Milford lake.
The last two years we meet at my place tell some camp fire stories maybe shoot a few arrows then convoy out to the hunting area. Hunt til lunch and then if folks are up to it might go out for an afternoon hunt.
Sounds like a lot of fun, be sure to let me know when this will be when it gets settled.
Always like to meet other "Gangers" and fling some sticks!
I'm in. I am living in Derby at the time so when the time comes we can ride up with Lablover but be prepared to listen to Labs wild stories of his youth. Time well spent I should say.
I may have some training to go to the 1st 3 weeks in January. Once I find out for sure I will let yall know and push out the dates so we can settle on what weekend works for most to be able to meet up.
I would be interested in going, if you guys would accept a new guy on the stomp. Paul, I would even volunteer to give you a ride.
--Mike
Pick the date that works best for you Kelly. This year I'll make sure to lock in the time off at work tho...
The more the merrier Mike, it's a fun time and last year they even managed to get a rabbit. Maybe we can get Horton to come along this year?
Paul I will try and look at my work calender next week and try and plan something.
All are invited I just ask you Let me know if you plan on coming that way I now how much meet to put on the grill for lunch. If you have a cobbler or other side bring it and if not come any way.
Just was thinking about this will all the snow on the ground. Be warned the bunnies dodge arrows. I'm in for the 1st, 3rd or 4th weekends in February.
This sounds like great fun. I'm just down the road in Manhattan and would like to join if there is still room for another.
Cheers,
Pete
The more the merrier Pete... :wavey:
I'm in!!!
Just need a location and date.
I may possibly be able to make it myself! sounds like fun.
LarryDawg
I'd be happy to tag along as well if possible.
How is 1 Feb for everyone? We can meet at my place and head out to the bunny grounds I need to go look at them and see what was planted there this year.
Oh and there is no limit on folks that can join us. I just ask yall let me know so I know how much meat to put on the smoker. You may bring something to go with deer if you wish.
Feb 1 sounds good to me Kelly.
I'll make sure to schedule it at work this year so I don't miss it again...
Paul I hope you do make it this year. Who else can make it lets start getting a list together.
I'll be there Kelly.
Feb 1 sounds good to me. Looking forward to it!
I think I should be able to make the 1st Kelly. I'll see if I can drag a couple of extras along.
Bretto
I had a blast the first year you out this together, but I'll be training for work so won't make it again this year. Hopefully this will be the last time I miss out, have fun guys!!!
I will be able to make it. Paul, do you want to ride with me?
--Mike Dunnaway
That would be great Mike.
Thanks and Happy New Year.
Hey Mike got room for another? Joe
If you need my address any other info just shoot me a PM.
You bet, Joe. We can work out the travel arrangements later.--Mike
I'll make the 1st. Can't wait.
I can't wait to see all of you. This deer season was a bust for me here this year.
No kidding blew my elbow and couldn't even hunt. Spoke with my therapist and I should be able to shoot by Feb. I'm coming even if all I can do is walk and carry a bow. Tony are you going to be able to make it?
Kelly can you P.M me your address?
I'll gladly bring some food , snacks, cups, plates. You know whatever You need.
bretto
Sorry to hear about your elbow Joe.
"I'm coming even if all I can do is walk and carry a bow."
Heck, that sounds like all the Kansas bunny hunts I've attended. :D
My daughter may have a volleyball tournament that weekend. If she don't I will be there for sure.
Yeah Joe I should be able to go. Anybody else
riding with you? Or i can drive. Breakfast?
Lab sorry to hear that and we always get shots at clumps of grass, rubber duckies and the like oh and a bunny or 2.
Breakfast folks can bring stuff for that if they wish. I will post next weekend or so what I plan on cooking for lunch. Heck if I go out and get a deer during the extend season I might make some deer gravy and biscuits for breakfast.
Man Kelly, if you keep talking that deer gravy and biscuits, you're liable to have one more on your hands for breakfast!!
I think I have my wife talked into baking a buttermilk pie for us... :D
Oh awesome Paul. I love that buttermilk Pie. Wife made me one for Christmas dinner. I will have to give yall more info after I see the doc on Wednesday because;
I fractured my tibia in 2 places (at the ankle and below my knee).
I was doing a ruck march and hit a patch of snow under ice.
I do not plan on postponing the hunt. I may just have to watch more from the side lines.
Heck that will give paul a chance to kill a rabbit.
But I will let yall know more Wednesday after I see the Doc.
Oh Man that is a bummer Kelly... :(
Maybe we can find an off road wheel chair for you. ;)
Hate to see this. Keep your chin up and let us know how we can help.
bretto
Paul I hope to make it around on crunches ok by that time.
Bretto heck I don't have to go to work and get to lay in bed and play on here all day.
I am not complaining just yet. I know it will get old but for now the worse part is I have to stay in the same position for hours. I have to keep my ankle and knee elevated for the next 4 days.
I had both knees replaced the end of 06. I was off work for 13 weeks.
The best thing about it I learned about TradGang!! Been here ever since. Made lots of new friends because of a medical issue. Who would have thunk it. :bigsmyl:
bretto
This sounds like something I would like to do next year. My spots arent too far from Riley. My buddy owns a couple hundred acres with his retired General. That may work. And my other buddy owns several hundred acres close to Westmoreland.
Bummer, I Hope you have a speedy recovery!
Pete
Hey Kelly,
Maybe we can find you a swivel seat bar stool then just set you in a spot and we'll drive the little furry hoppers to ya..? :D
Take it easy and heal up quick Buddy. :wavey:
Paul Now blocker is somthing I might be able to do.
Keith Who says we cant hunt bunnies more then once a year?
I only get to KS a couple times a year:( I will be there in April at Wild Horse Creek Bows annual shoot. And not again until fall. Not enough vacation.
Keith-
Is there anywhere we can see the pictures you had taken at last years WHC shoot?
Sure, in trade for a WHC 2 piece longbow:)
My nephew has laid claim to that bow Keith. Too bad Mike won't make any more of them.
I know. It is a shame. So I had to resort to my new Kestrel he just finished.
I will trade a pic for a pic. But that's as far as this goes!
Kelly - Sorry to hear that you are all broken up. Bummer! Sounds like you will be needing some help. Please send me a PM with what I can bring that would help the most. I can bring biscuits, dessert, beans, or whatever you'd like. Directions and arrival time would be helpful as well.
Paul and Joe will be riding with me.
--Mike Dunnaway
Hey Mike, I had a cold last week. Should have brought me some chicken soup:)
So I moved to Prairie Village, KS and I'll planning on heading to stomp some bunnies. If anyone has room for me or wants to jump in I'll be making the trip and I don't know many strangers. PM me if you're heading that way from the KC area.
Hey Kelly,
Hope the legs is feeling OK. I have a shop stool that I can bring along. It doesn't have a swivel seat but it should work for you.
Paul
Man at least my elbow is progressing so they tell me sorry to hear about the knee Kelly. But I plan on shooting no matter what. Might need a lighter bow. Tony no one I know of but anyone in the rosehill, douglass, derby, etc area is free to go who wants. Just let me or tony know.
Hey Joe,
I have a light weight bow. Do you want me to bring it along?
That would be great paul, Thanks.
OK Joe.
I have a couple so I'll just bring them all and you can choose which works best for you.
My leg is doing ok. The doc said so far he sees no need for surgery. But I messed it up pretty good.
Seems I fractured my chin bone 3 places and that is not the real concern it is all the soft tissue damage in my ankle. I will be in a full length cast for a bit.
I have a hunting chair Paul but I thank ya. I plan on really just sitting watching the first push or so. And really just looking foward to see all again and meeting new Gangers.
Also I edited my first post with date and time we are meeting.
Hi Kelly. Glad to hear that the leg is doing OK. Course, a broken in 3 places shin bone is a new definition of the term "OK" to me...
We'll just have to let you guide, direct and supervise us I guess. :)
Paul I don't herd cats I just watch'em. :smileystooges:
Here is the list I have of who said they are coming.
If you are coming I just need to know so I know how much meet to take out for the smoker.
And I just did a quick glance through the thread so if I don't have you on the list sorry I just overlooked you and not on purpose. The more the merrier.
Any others besides these folks.
Paul
Caleb Monroe
KSPete
bretto
Horsey
Backyard bowhunter
Lablover
huckbuck
Goose Gossett
I am hoping to make it, not sure yet.
Vince, you out there?
Just confirmed no volleyball that weekend. I will be there.
Sweet Pigsooie. Hermon hope you to see ya.
I will get into the freeze and see what kind cuts I have. Heck might have some elk left.
Kelly - I will bring a little smoked trout appetizer. Is there anything else we could bring that would help?
--Mike
Pigsooie, you can ride with Lablover and myself if you want, I think ole KsShrewman might be going with us too.
Perfect Tony, Just let me know what time and where to meet you and I will be there. I talked to larry about a week ago and he said he would try to make it depending on schedule. I shot with Vince last week and he is going to try to make it as well. Should be a good time.
Tony what time we meeting? I can drive. I'm thinking your place to meet. call me.
I just put 1lb of elk Italian sausage in the frig. I am planning on making gravy out of for breakfast that morning.
I am thinking that I might do a pot roast instead of putting meet on the grill. They are calling for snow Thursday night so going in and out in crutches to the grill does not sound fun. So I am thinking elk or deer pot roast or both. But who knows.
I remember how good your pot roast was that first time we got together at your place. :)
I'll vote for pot roast...
Well I put some elk back strap in the frig to thaw. I will put it on low in the crock pot before I go to bed Friday night should be ready by lunch.
Sounds good Kelly.
Looks like we may get a dusting of snow by Saturday...?
Sorry one and all, but due to family commitments beyond my control I will be in Texas this weekend instead of hunting bunnies like I want. Hope you all have a great time. I'll be there next year. Paul no need to bring the extra bows now but thanks anyway.
Well Dang... :( Sorry to hear that Joe.
Maybe we'll see you at the trad rondy at T.H.E. in June ?
Sorry to hear that Lab.
Kelly - I just wanted to let you know that Mike Horton and Roger LaGrange will be joining us as well. Thanks. We are all looking forward to it.
--Mike
This just keeps getting better.
bretto
Hey fellas I am sorry but I think we will have to postpone the hunt. I hate doing it at the last minute. They are calling for anywhere from 1" to 6" of snow here starting Friday night. I will look at a weekend in late Feb early March.
I am truely sorry but I can't control the weather and as bad as I feel about canceling it I would feel much worse if some of you got into an accident trying to make the drive here.
Plus if is snows at all I can't even sit on stool and watch the hunt.
I please let the others know.
Let me know if there is a better weekend in late feb early march. I have to see what is going on at work first.
I wondered if this might happen. I'm without 4X4 right now and wasn't looking forward to the ride without it.
I'm kinda committed to the last weekend of Feb. but should be able to do about any other.
Thanks for putting this together Kelly. I know it's not easy. Be safe this weekend everyone.
bretto
bretto as much as I need to see some fellow hunters and just swap stories and share fellowship. It is not worth have one of you get into an accident.
Can't be helped Kelly. Better to be safe.
Besides, now I'll have a whole weekend to eat that buttermilk pie....BWAA HAAA HAAA HAAA :D
;)
Better to be safe Kelly. Let me know what weekend and I will make it work.
Crap forgot about the Pie! Well we can only pray that you can talk her into make another one.
Well... I'll see what I can do Kelly.
:)
Hip hip hooray I'm in again. Sorry for all you guys, but man I hated missing the fun. Now I'm in again. But I would brave 12-13" of snow for buttermilk pie!!! Tony still want to car pool whenever? Kelly maybe us wounded warriors will be up to shooting by then. Keep in touch.
Pie? Nobody told me there was going to be pie!
How much snow???
I am definitely in whenever it is rescheduled!
Snow is suppose to start tonight and stop some time Saturday so I really don't know.
hey Kelly with all going on in my life right now, I wasn't going to be able to make it this weekend so, I will say if you do it in march I should be able to make it.. I would really like to meet ya'll since Im kinda the lone Trad Guy in my area..

Larry,
You would be more then welcome. There are a few of us scattered all over the state.
Well John that was some FINE vitals by anybodys book. Hard to explain how you gained weight on a hunting trip.
Well we got about 3" of snow its melting of course.
How does 8 March sound for the make up day? Let me know what yall think but I think that is the best day I can find. I will have to double check my work schedule next week when I go back.
Sounds good to me. I'm in.
I'll check with the "powers that be"...?
Pencil me in though.
Buttermilk pie paul? :)
Works for me.

The powers that be said OK on the buttermilk pie... :)
Awesome then 8 March it is. Hope to see everyone.
BTT...
Sorry, Kelly, I won't be able to make it. Too much going on in March. Have a great time.
--Mike
sorry to hear that Mike. How many we looking at in this date? I am counting 4 plus me makes 5.
Unless something happens between now and then I plan on being there Kelly.
bretto
There's 8 standard slices in that pie... :D
Well 13 days and we should be seeing some bunnies.
Sounds good Kelly.
How's the leg doing?
Good luck guys, I hope you take lots of pics!

Might just be a picture of an empty pie plate.. ;)
Hello was wondering if any spots opened still ?I live about 50 miles from Riley .Sounds like a lot of fun
Don't see why not. PM KellyG for directions and we'll see ya there. :wavey:
10 days until we have some bunny fun.
Paul he leg is still in a cast but still no surgery needed.
Well, a cast is better than surgery Kelly. Maybe seeing you in a cast will lull the rabbits into a false sense of security...? :D
Yes better a cast than surgery. Looks like we may have a little snow on the ground if we get the snow the weather mans says for us north of I 70 highway. But a little snow makes great bunny hunting I just love those wabbits.looking forward to going and meeting all you guys it sounds like a lot of fun and great chance to meet some trad .Hunter's. What time do we meet to head out I'm about a hour away. Thanks
TTT for Mr Lamb
I'll be there. Looking forward to it.
Well its 14 outside now and sleeting right now soon we will see the snow instead.but thats ok i dont think we will have alot on the ground on the 8th. Always like alittle on the ground makes hunting wabbits alot more funi and easy to hunt.well we will see you know in kansas wait 15 minutes and it will change you just dont know if its good or bad lol.looking forward
Their calling for 5-9" of snow here outside of K.C. tonight and tomorrow. High of 9* tomorrow -5 to -10 Mon. morning. BRRRR!!!!
Gonna be 50* by the weekend though. Gotta love this Kansas weather. LOL
bretto
So, we muster at Kelly's place at 0800?
(Hey, 10 pages now...cool :saywhat: )
Yeah but we had to post pone to get that many pages. Hope to be there but no shooting for me the elbow gets cut on on the thirteenth. Doc orders no stick flingin.
Sorry to say I'm not going to make it. We have family coming into town. Have fun!
Dang Joe, that's too bad. Not even a light draw bow..? I've got a couple in the 20's...
At least come and regale us with sea stories and eat some pie.
I'm hoping to Paul, but not sure yet. Yeah not even a light draw. He says no, no, no.
Sorry guy's but I can't make it my best friend foxie my Belgian Malinois has to go to vet today .She has a good size lump on her neck and vet says they might have to operate so I better stick around on Saturday.I hope we can get together soon because I was looking forward to meeting some of you traditional guys have fun guy's and I hope you get a lot of wabbits
Sorry to hear Joe but you and I can just be blocker for the others. Mark hate to hear your best friend is not doing so well. I am not that far away so maybe we can get together and call in some toms.
I Will start the fixing for break fast burritos and need to look and see what I am making for lunch.
I had roast out for the last one but that one is no more. So I need to look and see if I have any more elk or if it is going to be plane ole whitetail back strap.
Sorry to hear about your dog Mark. Been there...
Hope you can make it Joe. The wife said she'll be baking the pie today... :D
Thanks guys and Kelly that sounds real good to me .You guys have a bunch of fun and hope you get a bunch or wabbits
Well I am taking a break for a bit then I am going to fry chorizo, then some hash browns in it's grease with some onion then add some eggs then but he chorizo back in the skillet. So in the am we can have some breakfast burritos.
I put out some deer shoulder roast. I will put it in the crock pot and get it going in the morning.
I can't decide if I just want to do a pot roast or stroganoff (if I have the fixing that is). I have some dried morels that will go in no matter what.
Well I got lunch started just plain ole pot roast did not have enough sour cream for the stroganoff. But I did have plenty of dried morels. That and some taters, carrots, and onion should turn out yummy.
breakfast is heating, filled up the Keurig so coffee will be on demand.
If you cook it they will come. (I hope) :)
Well it was a fun day. Rabbits were seen but none harmed. It was a cold windy day here. I will get pics up of the hunters.
Caleb, Paul and Bret I hope it was a fun day. Bret the pork was great and paul the Pie was awesome.
Thanks for a great day Kelly. Under the circumstances you were a most generous host. Can't be many guys with broken legs that will feed ,guide and entertain a group of misfits as well as you did.
Hope the leg heals fast. Nice meeting you and Caleb.
Bretto
Had a great time and enjoyed the company, the stories, the food and the hunt. Caleb shall from now on be known as Eagle Eye cause he sure can see a rabbit quicker than the rest of us. Must be those younger eyes..?
Hope that leg heals up in time for turkey season Kelly. Thanks again for putting it all together.
Welcome to both of you, glad yall had a good time. TBret thanks for the pork and Paul thanks for the Pie.
We met at my place around 8AM and had some breakfast burritos. We chit chatted for a bit to see if any others showed up, it was just us four.
We got to the bunny grounds around 9:30. Paul dropped me off at the end of the first push and I sat and just watch the beauty of the world.
It was a bit cold and the wind was really breezy so after the first push I sat in the car while they tried a couple of more rows.
I was told they seen 6 or so bunnies and one arrow was flung.
Here is a few geese flying there were several flocks like that one. But hundreds down on the lake.

Here is Pual, Bret and Caleb just before leave the bunny grounds and grab some lunch.
After the hunt was over we went back to my place for some deer pot roast, Bret's smoked pork and Paul's wife's butter milk pie. After lunch we sat for a few hours just swapping stories.
Thanks for a good time next time I hope I can walk and shoot with you.
Thank you Kelly for the hospitality. I agree with everything that Brett and Paul have said. As far as being Eagle Eye they are hard to miss when you scare them into my lap. I seem to learn something every time there is a gathering of Trad bow shooters. Some of it is even useful. Thanks again Kelly. Brett and Paul hope to see you guys in topeka in june.
Looks and sounds like you guys had a bunch of fun and man sounds like their was some good eats. I'll make it next time my dog is doing better she goes back in 2 weeks so looking good so far.And Kelly I would like very much to do some turkey hunting with you l just ordered my early birthday present its the limited edition Savanna stealth and looking for to hunting with it this spring.
Well there is a bunch of public hunting here. But I am always up for a road trip. I will see in April how long I will have this cast on. I hope not much this weather might get their morels popping.
I hope you get it off soon to and if we get some rain soon shrooms should be popping up so maybe some shroomin and turkey hunting let me know how your getting along. I have a few hot spots for shrooms
Mark,
I can't put any weight on my leg for another month. Out of the cast and in camwalker. My morel and spring turkey season is a bust.
Man that sucks Kelly!! Take it easy and get that leg ready for Deer season.
Maybe we can get out to Milford and shoot some fish later in the summer. Keep us posted how your rehab goes.
bretto
Sure enough Bretto.
Dang Kelly, sorry to hear that it's taking so long to heal. Take it easy and I hope it gets better soon
Paul
