Title: 2014 Kansas bunny stomp?
Post by: KellyG on October 28, 2013, 10:49:00 PM
Well I keep seeing them heck; launched and arrow at one that kept taunting me the other night.  Missed by a hare.

But it got me thinking we should start putting out feelers for next years stomp. It maybe almost Feb before I can do it. I don't know what I will cook this year. Last years elk is almost gone and no deer down yet. Might have to scoop up some road kill and make stew.

So who is interested this year?

OK so 1 Feb meeting at my place around 0800hrs or 8 am.

I'd sure be interested in coming up. I tried last year, and didn't make it up for some reason I can't remember. Sounds like you had a great time.

Bryan it is a great time. Heck we even shot at some last year. I have seen a bunch hopping around this year. I may try and find some other areas. But the other one has held a bunch of rabbits in the past though.

My "sense of adventure" has... matured a bit Bob.
If it's fresh roadkill that would be ok, just don't want any that's passed it's expiration date.

(Though, as I think on it," expiration date " could just be the day it became roadkill..?"  ;)

It looks like Riley Kansas is 300 miles, 4 1/2 hours from Oklahoma City. How much is a 2-3 day small game out of state bow hunting license for Kansas?
Title: Re: 2014 Kansas bunny stomp?
Post by: lablover on October 30, 2013, 02:08:00 PM
Jeff I live in Douglass about 14 miles east of you and when the time comes if you want to convoy up we can meet and head up you won't regret it we have a great time. Well except Paul won't eat road kill.

No short term license in Kansas. A yearly Non-Resident hunting license is 72.50.

Hope to make it this year. I'm sure it will be a blast.

Jeff I live in Riley which is north of Fort Riley. We hunt south of Clay Center on public lands on the northern end of Milford lake.

The last two years we meet at my place tell some camp fire stories maybe shoot a few arrows then convoy out to the hunting area. Hunt til lunch and then if folks are up to it might go out for an afternoon hunt.

Lab sorry to hear that and we always get shots at clumps of grass, rubber duckies and the like oh and a bunny or 2.

Breakfast folks can bring stuff for that if they wish. I will post next weekend or so what I plan on cooking for lunch. Heck if I go out and get a deer during the extend season I might make some deer gravy and biscuits for breakfast.

Title: Re: 2014 Kansas bunny stomp?
Post by: KellyG on January 09, 2014, 04:13:00 PM
Oh awesome Paul. I love that buttermilk Pie. Wife made me one for Christmas dinner. I will have to give yall more info after I see the doc on Wednesday because;

I fractured my tibia in 2 places (at the ankle and below my knee).

I was doing a ruck march and hit a patch of snow under ice.

I do not plan on postponing the hunt. I may just have to watch more from the side lines.

Heck that will give paul a chance to kill a rabbit.

But I will let yall know more Wednesday after I see the Doc.

Paul I hope to make it around on crunches ok by that time.

Bretto heck I don't have to go to work and get to lay in bed and play on here all day.

I am not complaining just yet. I know it will get old but for now the worse part is I have to stay in the same position for hours. I have to keep my ankle and knee elevated for the next 4 days.

My leg is doing ok. The doc said so far he sees no need for surgery. But I messed it up pretty good.

Seems I fractured my chin bone 3 places and that is not the real concern it is all the soft tissue damage in my ankle. I will be in a full length cast for a bit.

I have a hunting chair Paul but I thank ya. I plan on really just sitting watching the first push or so. And really just looking foward to see all again and meeting new Gangers.

Also I edited my first post with date and time we are meeting.

I just put 1lb of elk Italian sausage in the frig. I am planning on making gravy out of for breakfast that morning.

I am thinking that I might do a pot roast instead of putting meet on the grill. They are calling for snow Thursday night so going in and out in crutches to the grill does not sound fun. So I am thinking elk or deer pot roast or both. But who knows.

Hey fellas I am sorry but I think we will have to postpone the hunt. I hate doing it at the last minute. They are calling for anywhere from 1" to 6" of snow here starting Friday night. I will look at a weekend in late Feb early March.

I am truely sorry but I can't control the weather and as bad as I feel about canceling it I would feel much worse if some of you got into an accident trying to make the drive here.

Plus if is snows at all I can't even sit on stool and watch the hunt.

I please let the others know.

I wondered if this might happen. I'm without 4X4 right now and wasn't looking forward to the ride without it.

I'm kinda committed to the last weekend of Feb. but should be able to do about any other.

Thanks for putting this together Kelly. I know it's not easy. Be safe this weekend everyone.

I Will start the fixing for break fast burritos and need to look and see what I am making for lunch.

I had roast out for the last one but that one is no more. So I need to look and see if I have any more elk or if it is going to be plane ole whitetail back strap.

Title: Re: 2014 Kansas bunny stomp?

Well I am taking a break for a bit then I am going to fry chorizo, then some hash browns in it's grease with some onion then add some eggs then but he chorizo back in the skillet. So in the am we can have some breakfast burritos.

I put out some deer shoulder roast. I will put it in the crock pot and get it going in the morning.

I can't decide if I just want to do a pot roast or stroganoff (if I have the fixing that is). I have some dried morels that will go in no matter what.
Title: Re: 2014 Kansas bunny stomp?
Post by: KellyG on March 08, 2014, 08:03:00 AM
Well I got lunch started just plain ole pot roast did not have enough sour cream for the stroganoff. But I did have plenty of dried morels. That and some taters, carrots, and onion should turn out yummy.

breakfast is heating, filled up the Keurig so coffee will be on demand.

If you cook it they will come. (I hope)  :)

Hope that leg heals up in time for turkey season Kelly. Thanks again for putting it all together.

Welcome to both of you, glad yall had a good time. TBret thanks for the pork and Paul thanks for the Pie.

We met at my place around 8AM and had some breakfast burritos. We chit chatted for a bit to see if any others showed up, it was just us four.

We got to the bunny grounds around 9:30. Paul dropped me off at the end of the first push and I sat and just watch the beauty of the world.

It was a bit cold and the wind was really breezy so after the first push I sat in the car while they tried a couple of more rows.
I was told they seen 6 or so bunnies and one arrow was flung.

Here is a few geese flying there were several flocks like that one. But hundreds down on the lake.

Here is Pual, Bret and Caleb just before leave the bunny grounds and grab some lunch.

After the hunt was over we went back to my place for some deer pot roast, Bret's smoked pork and Paul's wife's butter milk pie. After lunch we sat for a few hours just swapping stories.

Thanks for a good time next time I hope I can walk and shoot with you.

Thank you Kelly for the hospitality. I agree with everything that Brett and Paul have said. As far as being Eagle Eye they are hard to miss when you scare them into my lap. I seem to learn something every time there is a gathering of Trad bow shooters. Some of it is even useful.  Thanks again Kelly. Brett and Paul hope to see you guys in topeka in june.
