Title: A much needed boost of hunting spirit!
Post by: bigb3303 on October 27, 2013, 08:57:00 PM
Friday after eight long hours watching the clock, I was finally at the deer woods! I hunt a 300 acre TVA property , that's swarming with Tennessee new hunting curse, the crossbow hunter. The gather around the one food plot, siting in lawn chairs and smoking, and shooting at any deer within sight. I decided to distance my self this time and explore some new ground, a thicket that I never see anyone hunt along a crp field. I eased along the thicket silent like the ghost of hunters past. Trying to walk as my grandfather thought me, with the quietness of a cat. As I eased along the thicket I watched for sighns of deer. The flicker of a tail, or tracks along the ground . I came upon an opening with a single deer trail leading in. I followed the trail into what was a deer bedroom. A Stand of lone chinky pub oaks, in the middle of the grown up thicket. There was deer sighn everywhere! Beds, droppings , and four rubs! I was in my own hunting paradise , perfect for a traditional hunter like me! I felt like I had taken a prize buck, finally doing something right. After so many mistakes it felt good to have found my own little oasis! I sat Benith an oak, taking In the sun and the beauty of gods creation, when I was awoke by the welcomed foot steps of deer! A lone doe was easing into the opening, eating acorns, without a care in the world. I got ready for a shot, but one was never presented  . But I haven't hunted six years with my recuve to cripple one now. Even though no shot was taken I felt I had a successful hunt, and a much needed freshening and filling of the soul. This has been the highlight of my season, and I just wanted to share.

Patience and preserverence.

Last two evenings I have almost had venison.  Both nights I have had small deer within range - one a fork.  But the shot never appeared that was what I wanted to take.

Just a blessing to have deer nearby and to have them wander off unalarmed even though I "took coup" by having the bow up and partly drawn.  To me that is almost as good as a kill.

It's moments like these that stick with you.

Good luck!
