What an incredible afternoon my daughter and I shared today! It started with her in one tree and me in another and ended with lots of hugs, some cool video footage and a punched tag!
Right now I'm all beat up from emotions and need some sleep. I'll leave you with a self video I took around 4:30. Promise to be back tomorrow with some stories, photos and more!

Tim , I emailed you last night. Getting ready to walk out the door. Snowing here, wind out of the North. Should be a great morning in the stand. I can't wait to see the video. .....
Congrats Tim!!! Cant wait to see the details!!!
Good Morning Folks!
Yesterday was just one of those days where everything just works perfectly. Here in PA Thursday, Friday and Saturday are juniors day. That means that my daughter, 16 years old can take a doe with her shotgun. She has hunted with me attached to her hip the past two years shooting a doe the first year and both a buck and a doe last year. This season we decided to let her sit by herself but within sight and sound of me.
I placed her in the middle of an alfalfa field that the does have been pouring out into the past week. I setup due west on the edge of a swamp where I've seen 2 really nice bucks this season.
I got her into her stand around 3:30 and climbed into mine shortly there after!
Tim
My daughters quote on Insta Gram last night.......
"Hey everyone, my Dad took me out for youth day yesterday and look what we came home with!!!! Hmmmmm"
:biglaugh:
Looking forward to this.....
I like the way her stand is positioned. Looks like very good cover.
The weather felt more like December than mid October with 20 mile per hour winds out of the west that had us bundled up pretty tight.
I was tucked up in a big maple over looking a 10 acre thicket, that has a grass access swath cut right down the middle of it. When offered a west wind there's just no better place to be. Right around 4:15, yes 4:15 folks.......broad daylight! A real nice buck walks right out into the opening, 80 yards above me!
He was walking directly away from me, heading back into the thick stuff. I quickly sized him up, smiled to myself and let out my best "snort wheeze".
My best rendition of the Wensel / Mitten wheeze, stopped him dead in his tracks! Oh yeah!
For the next 10 minutes neither one of us moved. He stared, I hid behind the big maple in front of me. Is it amazing how big bucks work? Their in no rush, ever. I was warm and comfortable, sitting with my bow on my lap. Let the games begin! :jumper:
As I'm watching this big guy sort things out I can't help but remember this time last year. I sat in a tree that stood 10 yards from where I'm now sitting as the exact same scenario played out. A nice 8 pointer walked into the same opening, I wheezed at him twice and he walked right to me offering a 15 yard shot!
Here is "Last Years Buck"!

Back to the story...
With one quick look over his shoulder the big guy swapped ends and started towards me!
He disappeared into the thick stuff between us and for several minutes I saw or heard nothing. At one point I got kind of antsy, peaking around both sides of the tree looking for him. Nothing... I sat back and relaxed. A few seconds passed and I could see the chickadees flushing from the heavy cover not 35 yards below me. I slowly stood up, tucking my bow tip in my boot, game on, I thought to myself!
Looks like the Great American Family strikes again, Tim.
Congrats to you and that lovely lady! You do have some grand hunting grounds for ole PA!
I slowly glanced around the big maple that was in front of me. The buck was 35 yards away, standing in the middle of heavy cover just staring.
This is when I noticed several things.... First off, he was big! The rack wasn't breath taking but it was perfect. He had a nice solid white patch on his throat and a beautiful Roman nose. But big.....a nice stout body that made me look down at my little 47 lb ACS longbow and smile.
Another 10 minutes passed as we both stood quietly.
I was pretty calm so far, just a little tremble here and there but I really didn't believe that this was going to play out. He had to walk out in the open to get a clear shot. To my right was not good, due to a branch and directly at me was not good but most likely.
He had moved closer and was now 25 yards out in front nibbling on some branches and moving his rack around in the understory. He glanced back up the hill twice, which was not good. Than it happened......
Congrats Tim. I love the video great quality sportsmanship.
OK buddy, I have my cup of coffee in hand!
Thanks again for the call last night. I bet Amy was just as excited as you were!
Good stuff here...
:campfire: :coffee:
I can't wait either come on Tim with details
You can tell in your emotions that it was a awesome experience. Can't wait to witness it.
This why I like tradgang. :coffee:
The bucks next move was not good and took my blood pressure from low to high instantly! He glanced over his right shoulder back up the hill and began to turn and head away. He had no reason to walk out to me I thought. He would have to leave the thick stuff and expose himself. He could see no other deer, and the next patch of thick stuff was 50 yards on the other side of me.
As he turned to move off he caught his rack in some vines, he snapped his head back and forth a couple of times to break free. When they came loose he was facing me and just walked right out in the open! :scared:
Show Time! :archer2:
Make sure you take a moment to check out the video threads, there not very long but you can really feel the emotion!
My first post has a short clip right after I took the shot!
Tim
NICE!!!!!!!!!!
As he walked by at 15 yards I quickly leaned out, took a very deep breath, picked a spot and came into my anchor. The rest is nothing more than a blur...a white fletched blur crashing into the deer, just behind his front shoulder!
My stand was about 18 feet high, give or take and the deer was 15 yards away, so the photos give the impression that I shot high, maybe a touch but here's what happened next.
The arrow crashed through his scapula breaking his front shoulder. He ducked his head low and took off, my shaft protruding out. I knew the shot was good but I'm sure each of you know that quick feeling of concern, was it good enough?
He ran hard and fast on three legs and than began to stumble. He stopped at 50 yards and I could see him bring up his rear legs trying to balance. Just than.....he fell over! No movement at all, just complete silence.
:)
NICE!!!!!!!!!
I grabbed my binoculars for a closer look. All I could see was me arrow sticking straight up. No movement.....I checked again.....no movement. And again, and again.
I pulled out my cell phone and made a quick video, the one on my first thread. Talk about an emotional rollercoaster!
I called my daughter next. I told her to sit tight and that the does would soon be out and I in no way had any affect on the deer she was hunting. She laughed and said I'll be there in a second! A few minutes later I see her running across the field, her pack and gun safely back at her tree.
Following lots of hugs.....here's how it played out.

.
The video wont load for me!! UGH!?! LOL!! Great looking buck from what I can see Tim!!! Nice job!! Nothing better then sharing a successful hunt with your daughter or family!!
Great buck and video Tim-congrats.
Very Nice Presentation on the video!! Congrats on the experience and the great Buck!! That is so well done!! amazing!!!
I apologize for the arrow in the deer, I should have ran up and removed it for the video.
The arrow had broken through the shoulder and wedged in the opposite one quite deeply. I had one heck of a time pulling it loose.
The beauty of this hunt was that we still had plenty of light and I had my camera along. Amy took several photos that really capture the moment and the wonderful leaf change going on this time of year. Here are a few...

That is something to be proud of. I know you guys eat lots of venison also, so the best is yet to come, A family sitting around a table sharing a meal together like God intended. LF

Fritz: For you guys that don't know Tim, that is his daily demeanor. He is like that when he is getting a tooth pulled. Haha.
way to cool man congrats
Yep TJ, I kind of gathered that from the video. Seems like a super positive, happy kind of guy. I need to be more like that!
Right now I feel like I'm having a sugar drop! I went to bed at mid-night and just laid there with my eyes open!
I tend to get pretty excited in the field and have a huge passion for this stuff. Funny thing is, it doesn't matter whom I'm with, what I'm hunting and who makes the shot....I just get excited!
When you put so many hours in practicing, preparing and sitting on stand, the moment just tends to build. I figured I've sat on stand 56 hours so far this year. Who knows how many more hours I'll log in. I could probably use an "intervention"!
Tim if a guy can't get excited about this stuff somebody better check his pulse to make sure he's got one. Congrats again brother, I know how you like those "symmetrical" pretty bucks!
What a wonderful hunt !!!
Congratulations to the both of you...
Can you feel the love !!
Fritz, the buck in your avatar is incredible and I believe I reached out to you after you shot him. That to me is a classic whitetail, and yes, I have a difficult time passing up perfectly symmetrical racks. I'm just not a good field judge, never have been.
Here are a few items on my bucket list.....I've yet to shoot a buck wider than 19 inches, I've seen them just never made it happen. Here's something that will make you smile, I've only had one opportunity at a 10 point in 30 years and I hunt a lot! I'm going to have to work on these two items next year. :bigsmyl:
Congratulations on the beautiful buck. Way to hold it together at crunch time.
It certainly looks like your daughter is proud of her Dad. And Dad is even more proud to have this moment with her, as he should be. It doesn't get any better than that.
That's a great buck tim glad to see you got a dandy PA buck. I know its not easy here in pa to shoot big mature bucks. Nice deer enjoy the rest of your season your like me were tagged out on bucks now all we need is a nice doe or two. Congratulations
Hunting with your kids is such a bonus! Congrats on a fine animal! Great story too! :archer2:
Great looking buck
Congrats again!
Bisch
WOW....not sure how I missed this one this morning.
Congrats buddy on a fine Deer and some lasting memories..
What an awesome hunt Tim, congrats on a great deer.
My 10 year old son just took his 3rd deer in 3 years during youth gun season but my daughter who's 14 doesn't want anything to do with hunting. She does like venison and loves shooting bows so I cant complain too much.
Thank you for posting! Great hunt all the way around.
It doesn't get any better than that! Congrats to you both. :clapper:
Awesome, congrats!
Awesome, Tim! Congratulations! I love the enthusiasm, and the photos of you and your daughter are great. You can tell she loves being out there with you as much as you do with her!
Congrats Tim!
