Sure do , Birds, waterfalls, babling brooks , wind in the trees, the crunch of fresh snow under foot.
 An IPOD?  Surely you jest.

Getting away from it all is part of what it is all about and listening to a game or music would be like bringing civilization with me. Besides when I hunt I rely on my ears almost as much as my eyes to locate animals. Can't even stand to have a hat or hair over my ears.

I would never dream of listening to anything but nature when I am out in it. In fact I have nature sounds on my PDA so I can listen to it when I can't be there.

When I am snowboarding or mountain biking that is another story. Sometimes I use music to fire me up so I can ride like a bat out of #&!!. But never for hunting, fishing, hiking or canoeing.

Every year here in Michigan the local huntin shows will have a look into some of the tricked out huntin shacks and ice shanties. There are some with tv,stove, wood burners, you name it and someone will have it.

Marc- Last year when I was with the Wensel's on a pig hunt I listened to my iPod constantly while in the blind. Sitting in a blind for hours can be monotonous, and it really helped to pass the time.

If that music is loud enough for you to hear, don't think for a minute an animal can't. Alan

Sometimes I get a country tune stuck in my head which is residual from the car radio mostly...it's a chore to shake it out so I can focus on listening to the forest at times.

I've listened to the game a time or two. I never had it bother the deer as I use an earbud and turn up the volumn just enough to hear it

I rock out on my way to a hunting spot. My music may be a bit too heavy for most in here. I'm a heavy metal head!!!!  :jumper:

Alan - A group of javies came in and I shot one 2 yards in front of the blind,so...I don't think the volume was a problem.

I like music as much as most but can't even imagine choosing to listen to it over the sounds of the forest. It is like throwing away part of the experiance. I would think most traditional hunters would be more into the natural and spiritual aspects of the hunt than to do that. I hope I never feel that nature is so boring I have to listen to something to remind me of a city.

Old Ways- There aren't many forest noises in South Texas at 2:00 in the afternoon when it's 80 degrees. That being said, I wouldn't listen to music in the forests and creek bottoms of Montana while deer hunting, but there also aren't really  any noises when you're sitting in a blind in the middle of the prairie when it's 90 degrees outside and you're sweating your a$$ off waiting for antelope to come in, and I choose to listen to music in that situation. If listening to music while hunting makes me "not traditional", then I guess I'm just a bowhunter who uses a recurve.

Nope.Never have. I do listen to the "Last of the Mohicans" CD in the truck on the way to my spot.

Roger- The "Last of the Mohicans" CD would be a good one to listen to. My Great-Uncle has a friend who always listens to "The Spirit of Fred Bear" before he goes hunting.

I listen to an Ipod when I run and occasionally around the house.

My normal huntin' rule is that the radio goes off when I get to the front gate of my huntin' grounds.  It helps me get in the zone, and normally I just want some quiet time when I'm in the woods.

I say if you like it, do it.  Some folks may say its not traditional.  Next thing you know, you'll be shooting carbon arrows out of a laminated fiberglass bow.  My goodness! What is this world coming to?

Sometimes I wear earplugs before I go to the woods. When you take them out, you can really hear well for an hour or so. Hap

Tyler Carlson - Didn't mean to offend anyone. I guess I picture most traditional hunters as still hunting their way into a stalk and anything that would take away the experiance or focus just doesn't fit. I sat in a blind once and hated it too. Never will do it again. Not a big fan of tree stands either. I feel too confined and seperated from the game and my surroundings. To each their own though.

It probably wouldn't hurt to listen to music behind my house while hunting, because there is an Interstate Highway about 1/4 mile away and it's noisy all of the time.I could just see myself rockin out with AC/DC playing "Let There be Rock". I would be "duck walking" through the woods like little Angus............Oh never mind.  :jumper:    :jumper:

Ive thought about it several times but I wouldn't want to miss hearing a deer behind me or something. Noise is a lot times the first way I notice an animal in the leafy woods of long island.

Im starting to bring one for back country trips.  Its alot nicer falling a sleep listening to that instead of high winds or rain.  (just about any weather where your stuck in the tent)  While Im hunting there is just know way I could, just wouldnt feel right.

I never thought of using one in the tent at night...thats a good idea. As romantic as it sounds in print, wind, rain, and a flapping tent can make it hard to fall asleep. Also at the shoots...some of those Compton folks stay up later than I do! ;0)

Not when hunting, but do use my ipod at our practice 3d range, at the local bowclub...My recurve, one arrow, run from target to target, shooting the one arrow!!! Some Metallica bangin away, or some days maybe some George Strait!!!

I listen to books on tape while sitting in a blind or treestand all the time.  This past fall I shot 3 raccoons, a coyote and a 150 class whitetail while listening to my ipod.  None of them and numerous other deer ever reacted like they heard anything.

I don't listen to music when I'm out there.  I feel a need to be in tune with everything going on around me, even back at the tent.

I run from 3-5 miles, normally at least three days a week.  Then I'm rockin'!  Same goes for driving home from work.

I don't do it because I feel I would miss something.  Hearing sounds helps me to see more deer.  I NEED to be consumed with my surroundings on my hunts.  I am out for the adventure and connection with God that it brings.

Occasionally I'll take something to read while in the stand but I would never listen to anything but the sounds of nature around me. I only have two senses to aid me while hunting, hearing and seeing and my hearing seems to be my first alert.

I don't own an ipod and I'm not into modern music. I like to listen to Jim Bowman and Mark Bakers hunting songs on CD. I also like the oldies, Vaughn Monroe singing "Ghost Riders In The Sky" Also Johnny Cash's version. Of coarse I always sing along and that wouldn't work out too good while in a stand would it?       :biglaugh:

The lyrics in Ghost Riders are amazing............every word fits into the story.
I hunt on the ground, and 'listening' is usually the
first detecter for Mr. Piggie-so no ipod and no humming.

Never listened to music, but I've become addicted to ebooks and always carry my PDA with me....

I usually have 70 or 80 different books along.  I need to look into converting some of my hunting books.  Not sure how to do it without upsetting a copyright holder...

Try this, but I recommend listening before you hit the stand, rather than on it....

why stop at music? with the new Ipod/Cellphone/PDA from Apple, we finally can beat boredom by listening to music while playing yatzee and online poker, check emails and stock portfolio, get news, sports results and the weather channel, and textmessage our friends to tell them what a wonderful hunting experience we're having.  :biglaugh:

Ok, seriously, nothing but the sounds of Nature and the serenity of the woods/mountains for me  :)

Interesting topic and I admit to being surprised that some folks listen to anything but nature sounds while hunting. I love music and have it playing in my office and shop most of the time but could not do that in the woods.

I've heard before seeing most of the game I've taken while hunting from a stand and would not want to risk a shot opportunity. Even with all senses operational I've had animals in very close range without any warning.

Also when I go hunting one of my goals is to shed as many modern encumberances as possible. I don't even like to hunt within ear shot of a road.

Alex, your music is wonderful but I don't listen to it while hunting.   :)

I may read and I may even whisper on a phone or radio (with earbuds) but won't listen to a radio.  I rely on my hearing more than my eyes.

I listen to my stomach, my thoughts, instincts, my farts, mother natures noises. I listen to that so I can be part of the hunting experience.

I find this topic quite interesting as it is just an extension of reading a book while on stand.  I started bowhunting in 1968 and every whitetail, bear or antelope camp I have ever been in had stacks of books that previous hunters used to wile away the time while on stand.  In 1981 I hunted with Fred Bear at Grousehave, MI (the place Fred, his friends and supporters of Bear Archery hunted) and found that he carried a paperback with him on most hunts and the Lodge must have had over 100 books in it for hunters to take on stand if they wished.  Even in Africa the lodges I have hunted from had many paperback books left by previous hunters.  Several years ago some of my friends started using ipods to download books and listen to while stand hunting.  I resisted until my last trip to Africa when I bought an ipod to help kill time on the brutally long flights.  I spent several days in blinds from daylight till dusk and found the ipod was great.  I had African game come with 5 feet of the blind and not spook.  Last fall was the first time I used it whitetail hunting and I'm convinced it is the way to go for me.  My hearing has deteriorated quite a bit the past years and I don't hear animals like I used to.  Reading a book made the problem worse as animals would sneak up on me and then it was a juggling act to put down the book and get my bow.  Last fall using the ipod i held the bow in my lap most of the time and saw more animals then normal as I was watching 100% of the time (unless it was after lunch and I dozed off for a few minutes).  I find using a book or now the ipod helped me stay on stand all day long where as I get bored if I don't have anything.  One tip for the ipod; the ear buds didn't work for me so I got a real set of headphones.  I know a lot of guys reading this will think "what a bozo" and you're probably right, but after 40 years of bowhunting with some of the greatest hunters and greatest people in the world I'm happy.

I often read a book, and studied quite a bit while in med school. It was either review notes while on stand through the mid day, or not be able to go. I'll read through the mid day now, stop and go reading, nothing too serious.

I will have to admit to occasionally wearing a single ear bud when the Univ of Tennessee had a big football game in the mid day. Don't know if it ever had an effect on critters, but nice memories of fall leaves and Bama going down in flames a time or two.     :D

After years of exposure to unprotected firearm reports, my hearing ain't worth a squat as it is. AC/DC's release of Back in Black didn't help much either...

I got a good book for you to read on stand:

A Look at Life from a Deer Stand by Steve Chapman.

Enjoy.
