Title: String life expectancy?
Post by: Wannabe1 on October 22, 2013, 01:19:00 PM
I'm curious as to how long a string is good for when it is not being used on a bow? For example, I take a long time to wear out a string on my bow as I don't shoot a thousand arrows a month. So, my back up string just stays in my pouch and I'm wondering how long it will be good for before it is not safe to put it on a bow?

I'm using Dacron for my Hill bows.

Good question. I imagine if you store it waxed and relatively air tight it should last for a long time.

Silly question, I know say d97 is not organic, but I wonder if you frozen the string would last longer???

If you keep them out of the sun I would imagine they are good candidates for a time capsule ...

I circulate them; use the existing string for 6 mos-maybe 1 year. Ditch it, put on the back up and buy a new string that then becomes the back up. I test the back up with nock and silencers and then tie it up so it can't untwist.
I agree with elkken about the life expectancy.

Years. I have never worn one out. If they start to fray or get cut from brush etc I may replace it but I have strings I made 20 years ago still being used, albeit not being shot daily. Keep em waxed and check the loops to make sure the grooves aren't cutting them

If I live long enough to wear one out I'll let you know!  I have several way past 20 yrs. old on bows I shoot regularly.

Really appreciate the feedback folks. I was just concerned on my back up string and wanted to make sure it will last me. I usually put it in a ziplock bag, air tight and sealed.
