Title: books on whitetails
Post by: mooseman76 on September 09, 2007, 07:33:00 PM
I'd like to learn more about whitetail deer.  I've been hunting for 19 years now and have killed a pile of deer.  Problem is my hunting land is now gone and I must find some new places.  The old land I just knew where to go, since its been the same places I was put in when I started.  I'd like to be able to walk the woods and pinpoint places that are likely to hold deer.

I'm not a newbie, just a hunter wanting to educate myself on the habits of this incredible animal.  I've had some luck picking new spots, but would like a little more confidence.  Anyone know of any books, etc that will point me in the right direction.  Thanks

Mike

Bowhunting Pressured Whitetails by John Eberhardt. That one really helped me out.

One Man's Whitetail, Hunting Rutting Whitetails, and Come November- or anything else written by Gene Wensel. More than any single individual, Gene Wensel taught this former city boy, how to huntand WHY to hunt. More importantly, over twenty some years ago, Gene and Barry instilled in me a PASSION for hunting whitetail deer that continues to grow stronger to this day. Any success that I have enjoyed chasing whitetail deer over the years I owe directly to Gene and Barry.

You can't go wrong with this book. It is one of the best.

Somebody stole my copy of Come November out of my car the other day. Autographed copy I cought at Cloverdale. reading it getting ready for hunting season. Pulled into Wally world for groceries and left the windows cracked about 4 inches because it was 100 and I didn't want to get into a 200 degree car. well someone with skinny arms picked it up off the passangers side seat and walked away wiyj it I guess.Dadgum! ain't no way I can afford to replace it right now. I am sacrificing just to buy feathers and such to have arrows to hunt with this Season.
Any Book by the Wensels or Roger Rothaar, Paul Brunner, Jim Hamm, Richard P. Smith, John Ozoga would be a great addition to your library as well as Whitetail Masters edited by Dan Bertalan.

A Practical Guide to Producing and Harvesting White-tailed Deer; By Kroll

By far the best I have read regarding all aspects of the white-tailed deer.  I majored in Wildlife Ecology at Texas A&M and this was one of the books that I kept and continue to use as a reference guide.

'One Man's Whitetail' by Gene Wensel and 'Whitetail Magic' (I think that's the name) by Roger Rothhaar.  Both educate but also excite the spirit.  And you come away from reading them knowing the authors live and breathe whitetails...

Ditto, except the Majoring in Wildlife Ecology at Texas A&M.  I majored in Biology elsewhere.  :)

All of the mentioned books are great.  Especially those by the Wensels, and Roger Rothhaar.  Another really really good one...especially if you are normally forced to hunt small properties such as small woodlots in the midwest is "Hunting Trophy Whitetails in the Real World" by Don Higgins.  Excellent!

Hunting Rutting Whitetails and One Man's Whitetail are the only books I re-read every year.

On that note, anyone who has read these as well as Come November, can you tell me if Come November has much new material or is it mainly a compilation of the two previous books? Thanks

Thanks fellas, I placed an order for Come November and Bowhunting Pressured Whitetails last night.  I have a copy of the Jim Hamm book, tactics for recurve and longbow?  I gotta dig it out tonight.  Thanks again.
