Title: What is your favorite camo pattern?
Post by: Gdpolk on October 20, 2013, 07:55:00 PM
Easy question,

What's your favorite camo pattern for fall hunting, what do you hunt with it, and what does the land look like where you hunt?

my favorite is Natural Gear, but unfortunately the quality of the clothing it comes on is not the best, so I like the Max 1 camo, I hunt everything from cottonwood filled river bottoms to pine forests in the moutains and above treeline alpine settings. I think the Natural Gear is really good in the cottonwoods

I like natgear as well but use a lot of military surplus I can find it cheap and when the leaves are off theres lots of gray around. Also since I'm colorblind I've foundthat this is tougher to spot than most other patterns.

Wool plaid. I'm wearing what I had on when I released the arrow on this big, old doe.

For this time of year I like Bottomland Rock-o-flage (a light, neutral camo) to blend into the leaves when ground/still hunting and Mossy Oak Break-up (closer to maple bark) when in a treestand.

I like high contrast patterns cause they don't run together and make you a big dark blob from far away.  From November onward I love my Asbell evening stand green pullover mixed with surplus pants and various Realtree or APG trimmings.  I also just picked up a real neat looking zip up hoodie with a high contrast camo type pattern at of all places Target.  There's no rule you can't invent your own system, no need to be Realtree'd from head to toe.  The critters can get just as dead if you shoot em looking like a fashion disaster hahaha.

1. Predator
2. Predator
3. Predator

I have been on the ground with the wind in my favor and had deer walk right past me and I swear never see me. Mostly deception and fall grey..

I'm alittle odd... Never really concerned myself with patterns.....

As a matter of fact, I seem do have just as much luck wearing solid "earth toned" hunting clothes,LOL!!!

Yesterday I played Hide & Peek with a young 4 pointer at about 20 yds. I was wearing Realtree camo jeans, a solid Olive Green sweater and a brown hat. He was feeding his way toward me wearing nothing but his Brown winter coat(I never saw him either,LOL) when I decided to stand up & stretch... When I stood up,his head popped up!!!!! It was a staredown for quite awhile,LMAO!!!!! The wind was right in my face & he couldn't smell me. However... He DID see me MOVE and he knew it!!! Finaly, after about a half hour, he decided that he'd probly better take another route, and moved on.

I get most of my hunting clothes from the GoodWill store. A good solid color "earth toned" 100% wol sweater usualy costs me $3 or $4. I've also found wool hunting jackets for $10-$15.

Nothing wrong with "solid" colors, and I've never had a problem with camo that "blobs" either!!! As a matter of fact, I took a picture of my son Tyler, sleeping in our Stone Circle ground blind, with his back against a stone wall... He was wearing Realtree/Mossyoak whatever, and if it wasn't for the Blaze Orange & Chartruse fletching on his arrows... You would never be able to make him out!!!!!

I've got a mix of mossy oak, real tree, and army fatigues. When the stuff I have now wears out I'm buying wool stuff probably in plaid. I would love to get some Kuiu or Sitka but it's way out of my price range.

I have the First Lite ASAT wool.  Great stuff, love the camo.  I will say that I don't think camo matters anymore.  I had shots at deer wearing tan carharts and an ASAT shirt.  Anymore I think I will just go with brown earthtones.

Never had the chance to wear predator or asat or natural gear. Although I've always wanted to try those. I think at the moment I like any muted natural color and plaid. Lol kinda said to heck with it a while back and have seen more game in plaid so not gonna change what dosent seem to be broke.

The only true camo pattern I own is a lightweight outfit I bought for turkey hunting. I think it is Realtree AP. I wear it once in awhile for very early season deer hunting, and it works well.

Usually, I wear plaids or a muted solid. I have a pair of moleskin pants and a shirt too match. They are extremely quiet, sort of an olive drab color. 90% of the time, though, I wear plaid. Either wool or cotton flannel(flannel only on hot days).

In this picture I'm wearing solid OD moleskin pants and a Timber Ghost plaid jacket. I look at camouflage as a concept, not a pattern.

 (http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h227/rnorris/IMG_0584.jpg) (http://s65.photobucket.com/user/rnorris/media/IMG_0584.jpg.html)

Which is not to disparage commercial camouflage. I will be the first to admit that some of the better patterns (Predator seems like a great one) are worth owning. For me.....NOT wearing commercial camouflage feels more "woodsy, natural" if that makes sense. I won't say it's more of a challenge, because I don't believe it is, but it seems to fit the simplicity of traditional archery well.

I live in SE Ohio,Athens, and we have more deer on our city streets and yard than in the woods.
I counted 5 bucks in my side yard. I still hunt in the woods but come home and find deer in my driveway.

So I am going to start new camo lines:

1. Pressure Teated-Makes you blend in with your deck.

2. Roof line-Stand on your roof and shoot.

3. Best of all-Weber Grill cover-You can't grill it unless you kill it.

I think camo is useful, but overrated.  I have mossy oak and realtree stuff, but have yet to use it as I don't have a bow lol.  When growing up in Alaska, warmth was more important than color...my "hunting" coat was a Codet Olive drab/blaze orange reversible, and I wore spandex long undies and polar fleece snow pants...worked great!

Sweet, urban warfare.  I think some of the patterns they had when I first started hunting appeal to me due to nostalgia like original mossy oak even though I'm sure I look like black blob at distance as far as effectiveness hard to beat the asat and predator patterns.  Will probably be buying army surplus woodland green next time in market.  Price and effectiveness hard to beat

ASAT. I have some non-insulated coveralls that are big enough to wear over anything so I can use it all season long.

I hunt whitetails in central KY in mostly grown-up creek bottoms, cedar thickets, and small woodlots. And occasionally I hunt bigwoods deer in the knobs.

I have a couple different camo patterns I used to wear but now mainly just earth tone street clothes.
Brown Carhart jeans & plaid shirt is my usual garb. I haven't noticed any difference from it to when I wore camo.

Learning to mind the wind has done more for my success than anything I could possibly wear.

I'm still doing fine with some old style woodland pattern military stuff I got back in the 70's. In early season in my area, I would consider it as good as anything out there. In my opinion, the pattern itself is not so important as how still you can sit. Movement gets me busted more than anything else, except perhaps wind.

We have a lot of cedar trees around here and I use them as often as I can. When the light is beginning or fading they get really dark inside them and when I am tucked into one I want to be as dark as I can as you do not want a contrasting color in the background when you have to make a drawing motion move at the time of your shot. With that said I like the old school Mossy Oak bottom land or Breakup patterns as it is dark. As a whole the mossy oak patterns are darker also.

With that said. There is no pattern or wool that is the best for every hunting scenario. The one that best matches your background is the best for you at that moment. If you are in a pop up blind, black is the best for you to wear.

Here's what I was wearing last year.

Jacket is Predator deception ..brown I think..
When I washed the jacket it faded/lightened up quite a bit so I had to dye it a bit for this year.

Insulated pants are mossy oak something...

Both look good in B&W

I'm thinking pretty hard about switching to wool..either solid of some type of plaid. Most of the plaids I've seen from the vendor I'd like to purchase from seem a little too light colored for my hunting spots...might just do some dye work on them too...

It's been a few years since I've hunted or played woods paintball but when I did, my favorite shirt was a tan flannel with narrow grey plaid. In paintball I was told that when I stopped moving, I disappeared, and the only way they could spot me was by my blue jeans. That great tip made me quit wearing jeans to paintball... Also, I had 2 deer feed within 4 feet of me while sitting at the base of a tree. Unfortunately that was sooo close I couldn't move to get a shot.

I would give right arm to find that shirt again. Or even to find a similar pattern. It makes sense though, as the color was close to that of a deer, but slightly lighter.

My experiences with that shirt were in the woods of Ohio, so not sure how it would translate to CA.

Tops and pants are always different pattern.
Usually wear a bug suit top with the sewn on leaves. It really helps in other ways besides bugs.
It knocks off that hot sun that can pop out on even cool days but lets the breeze through..then conversely..it slows that dang cold north wind
and seems to make my underlayers a little warmer.
I think it cuts reflection from the sun also.
Best camo top I have.
