Temps are dropping and I guess I'm getting older and the cold seems to be getting to me more. My cheapo camo pants and a pair of long underwear don't seem to be cutting it. My old standby for real cold days is to add carhart bibs, but we are not near that cold yet. Any recommendations on a good pair of cold weather pants, I looked at a thick pair of fleece natural wear camo yesterday....lots of choices.
Army surplus wool pants.
Yup, wool pants and "expedition weight" long johns( not cotton).
I highly agree with Magnus. I get surplus wool pants. They are high waisted too so they cover 1/2 your belly.
Wool works wonders! Add thin long johns as liners!
When looking for warmer I like the Columbia wool... Nice and quiet!
I have a pair of LL Bean camo wool pants I wear. Price was right at an outlet store. 50 bucks. Not the best wool but layer the with either mid weight of expedition weight polypropylene long johns and it makes for a good system. Coldest it gets in my neck of the woods durning hunting season is 10-15 degrees in the morning. And that is a couple odd days. On that rare occasion I use two layers of polypropylene together. Makes it interesting when you need to pee but you do stay warm.
Wool!
Buy some minus 33 long undies u won't regret it!
has anyone tried those wool pants from cabelas? I have some points built up there and wondering about em.
I have Columbia wool . The wind goes through the garments pretty easy. I wish they were a tighter knit or came with a liner.
Cabelas Legacy Wool pants. Machine washable and they're on sale online right now. Good pants for the money, I have two pair.
i just bought a cabelas wooltimate vest and thinking about the wooltimate pants. the vest is very nice
Check ou the fleece pants from Predator Camo quiet and warm with a wind stop layer.

WOOL.
Windstopper is the key--Try cabelas for fleece/windstopper pants-- they have some on sale now.
I got some Cabelas fleece pants that are lined and have worn them in 20 degree/30mph wind and stayed warm. I didn't have long johns on, so I'm thinking with long johns, they should be warm down to below zero, which is about as cold as I am willing to hunt in anymore. I have a pair of the Legacy wool pants on order; I expect them to be my go to pants during the whitetail rut.
I have KOM hillbilly bibs, I would rather hunt with my heater body suit.
29° right now and my Columbia wool bibs are treating me just fine. Salvation Army marino wool sweaters and a Rancho Safari ghillie make up the other 1/2.
Wool pants all the way. I wear these (https://secure.armysurplusforless.com/productView.php?id=382) and am toasty warm! They do a cargo version in forest green too. Mine are big enough in the leg that I can fit two pairs of wool long johns underneath for when the temps really drop. Love them.

I bought the vest a few years back and loved it, so I got the pants as well. They are warm and quiet. Throw on my minus33 base layer underneath, and good to go. I just kept an eye on cabelas website and waited for the wooltimate to go on sale. It does every year.
I have had great luck with Cabelas Legacy Fleece with Wind Sheer with expedition weight thermals. The Wind Shear works great. It stops any wind from getting to you and seems to retain just the right amount of heat but still breaths.
Are you sitting or stalking? That question really needs to be answered first. If sitting, you are more concerned with heat retention and wind blocking properties. If stalking, it's more about wicking, breathability and the retention of warmth when wet. Wool is great for stalking but can be a bit heavy. But wool is not as good when sitting as the wind can go through it if you don't have some sort of wind barrier. Also note that certain wind barrier clothing do not breath very good when stalking.
double up on your thermals.
Insulated wranglers work for me. Come in dark brown, tough exterior like carhart, but about half the price. I order mine on amazon.
I guess I'm just Lucky, Lmao!!!
I work outside, all year long, in all types of weather. I never wear much more than a pair of blue jeans...
As for "hunting pants"... I have a couple pair of "Camo Jeans" that I wear,(not really for the "camo" more to keep me from wearing my "good" jeans hunting!) and I also have a pair of "thinsulate" insulated jeans. Usualy my son wears the insulated jeans when it gets REALLY cold!!!
However... That said, When it gets REALLY cold & snowy..... I break out the wool!!!!! I have a few pair of old green Johnson's Wool pants that I have been wearing for years. I just put the pants on & head out in the snow...
Never did like "longjohns"... Kinda like wearing 2 pair of underwear!!!
I use fleece with windstopper that I got from the classifieds......but I also like wool. I have wool pants that I have had for 25-30 years.....just tough to beat wool.
You certainly can't go wrong with wool, but I picked up a pair of fleece wader pants to use as an insulator, and they work great. When the temps don't demand wool, the wader pants under regular camo are the answer for me. They roll up nice and small in a pack and are lightweight to carry. I put them on under my light camo once I arrive at the stand site.
I use wool and the Cabelas insulated Microtex, depending on the conditions. Havent had a chance to try out the microtex in sub-zero conditions yet but it sure is comfortable.
I dont know about the rest of y'all, but Army Surplus ANYTHING is pretty scarce in My Neck of the Woods! We used to have a Great Store in Lafayette Indiana, just about 30 miles north of me, but I do believe it has gone by the wayside. Anyone in Midwestern Indiana have any Good Places to recommend? I sure would appreciate it! I know you can buy off the 'Net, but if I can buy closer to home makes the Purchase a bit safer for me, somewhere that I just might be able to Try them On First would be the Best!! Some folks idea of Medium, is Childs Medium or Amazon Medium, know what I mean??
I wear a grey pair of wool pants made by Woolrich. Very warm.
Before it is "wool cold"...just chilly.....moleskin pants work great. I have some from Schnees. with a pair of longjohns they are good into the thirties.
Wool is very good, and you can get it in various weights of cloth for changing temperatures. This is true for both outer clothes and long johns. Another very useful item in moderate cold is silk underwear like in the ski catalogs.
Yellow Dog said it best."Cabelas Legacy Wool" pants
Cabelas has some decent stuff but what irritates me is they have forgotten that their are people with an inseam longer that 32". All their wool pants are one length...32.
Eric
I have several pair of army surplus wool pants. I had to watch several sights for quite a while and when my size popped up I would buy them. They were only about 25 bucks a pair. They are very warm and tough. I like them. Gary
I like the cabelas wooltimate pants and I also like my columbia wool bibs. Columbia wool runs big just a heads up. The wooltimate goes on sale occasionsly that's when I bought mine.
X2 on predator fleece at st. Joe river bows
Love mine
Woolrich Malone wool pants. Amazing.
As other have stated, wool is great cold weather gear. If you want something that's a little more wind resistance, check out the Sitka Stratus pants - outstanding!!
If you are stationary such as in a stand I find that a fleece or wool blanket worn kilt style once you are in the stand can help.
And as everyone else said...wool. Nothing else comes close.
Has anyone had a chance to compare Cabelas windstopper wooltimate and windstopper fleece pants? Any clear winner between the two? On the edge of ordering and dont have a local cabelas for hands on inspection. Using them for stalking and stand hunting.
I just bought a pair of Browning's full curl wool pants a few days ago and already hunted in them around 24 hrs total. They are ridiculously warm, maybe even more than you're looking for. They have been perfect on the 15 degree mornings for me, but downright hot while hiking in the mid 40s. If you're stand or blind hunting they'd probably be great. they are a bit pricey, but so far seem to be long-term durable. Happy hunting.

I have the cabelas wind stopper fleece and I think they work great.

I bought a pair of these from David last year and I love them. Very well made and warmer than my wool pants.
I just bought a pair of Stormy Kromer bunkhouse britches. Its been too warm since I last hunted but will probably get to use them this week. Well made, domestic pants at a good price.
I sprung for the Gray Wolf bibs, the basic Northwoods unlined wool. Very nice, the tightest weave wool I've seen (including Filson). Wore them last night, upper 30's rain/snow 15-20 mph wind, nice and comfy!
Eric
I bought a pair of HEAVY military surplus (German I believe) wool over-pants. I had a tailor add long zippers to the legs so I could get them on over my boots. Wear with suspenders so I don't need a tight belt to keep them up.
I walk out to the stand in my jeans and, if it's cold, long johns. Once I get to my stand I pull the over-pants on and not even a hard wind gets through them. Dirt cheap too.
WOOL! Then buy a cheap pair of camo pants big enough to fit over them. When it gets cold I'll put on smart wool long johns, wool and then a pair of ASAT Bibs over everything.
