The Wensels had a movie out a while ago, I believe it was titled " Hunting October Whitetails". In it is described a method for hunting corn fields.
Has anybody used this method and given it a reasonable shot ? Any luck ?

Back when "Bowhunting October Whitetails" first came out,me and two of my friends tried it out on a corn field we had permission to hunt and we ended up killing four does, all were close range and the deer didn't even know we were there. It was pretty windy and damp. It worked perfectly.
The corn they plant around my area is so tightly rowed that it is almost impossible to see down the rows. "Hunting October Whitetails" is one of my all time favorite hunting videos. It's a must see.

If the field is planted in wider rows, and in a good location, stalking across the rows can be very exciting and productive. Windy days are best, damp and windy are better. Just remember to wear something that resembles the colors of the corn. Dark "normal" camo sticks out like a sore thumb.
Yep bow hunting October whitetails 1 and 2 are must watch a couple times each season and always first movies packed for hotel hunts!!
I don't hunt corn often but when I have permission to hunt corn I use that method when its raining and it is deadly.
I have had good success with this method
I was hunting corn fields even before October Whitetails came out. I stumbled on the method by accident, cutting through corn fields to get to my hunting stands. A couple times on very windy days I almost walked on bucks bedded in the corn. I started hunting the corn on windy days by cutting cross rows, looking up and down the row and when I spotted a deer I would step over one row and sneak toward the deer until I got within range, then lean into the row and shoot. One thing I might add to the method that wasn't in the video is to use binoculars when looking down the rows, it will extend the range you can see and help discern the difference between a deer and a rock.

Works great for me....... this doe was at 10 yards I snapped a pic for all my non believing buddies and went to 6 yards before I shot
Where can I find this video?
Dinwohio,
Awesome pic!
Bob.
Ha ha... great photos and thread!
Ron,
Dang it, now that I met you at K-zoo a few years back I'll have to admit that, like fine whiskey, you've improved with age! That pic I think I've seen before on a Most Wanted show a while back. I don't know what you'll do "when they come for you", but if you come for me, I'm running! LOL
I have said it before and hope it happens someday but I think someone (Ron) needs to put together a photo album/coffee table book of all the great, great photos Ron LaClair has. We have seen many but I know there are more stashed away in Potterville so who is up to the task?
Come on Ron??
I have the perfect field in mind (on a public hunting grounds), and the weather and conditions today are perfect . . . except. . pheasant season opened this morning. .

Neat technique yes. But like you they cramm plant.. Not very much space this area either. Have to walk sideways down em.
Forgot all about that technique and now all the corn is harvested here. I'll be better prepared next year.
Thanks for the binocs tip, Ron. Perfect.
"Bowhunting October Whitetails" was the first hunting video I ever owned....still my favorite.
I just don't have access to any property with standing corn! :bigsmyl:

Great early day videos and education for sure. The only problem you are going to have is that ag practices have changed in most areas. Between the narrower rows and the health of much of this corn you can not see down rows like we use to. The deer are still in there however. . . and just try to get them out of there. :bigsmyl:
I cannot explain why but in Massachusetts, seldom do you ever see deer hitting corn. I have a large field planted by my house every year and cut or standing, they just don't hit it

This picture inspired me today. The kids all went down for a nap and it was extremely windy, so i headed to the corn field on the property i hunt. I only ended up seeing one deer, but was able to get to about six yards before he busted me taking pics. Was a nice little six point. If I could figure out how to post pics from my phone I would but not getting it yet. Very cool to be that close to a deer at eye level and him not having any idea I was there.
