Was out last night. Instead of the marsh, I visited the uplands portion of the tract I hunt. I was amazed at the number and size of scrapes I saw. The weather changed quite a bit in the last ten days (colder) and the leaves are dropping. No more skeeters.
Its time to be in the woods !

Yup

Watched 4 young bucks brawling in front of my stand last evening. Grunted and threw in a fawn bleat, brought them all in for a look. Now if their fathers would show up I'd be in business! Won't be long now.

Found a scrape at the police range this morning, right behind the backstop!
Izzy, that must be from one of those young buck (thrill seekers). Done on a dare.
Do deer "double dog dare" or is it something else ?

Last night a had a dandy of a buck under my stand, 140 plus but he already had a antler broke off just above his brow tine so he got a pass from me and I'm hopeing he makes it another year.

sure is. Ive seen some small muleys even starting to chase. gonna be a fun November.
I have came across many new scrapes and rubs this week, they are starting to get in the mood in the western end of Maryland, I thought it was a little early yet but I guess I was wrong, I will have to see if any of these scrapes have been reopened since the leaves have started to cover some of them up.

My buddy had a 4 point dogging a doe this morning!
It's not unusual for young bucks to start making a mess of scrapes about now, though the big fellas do it too. Thursday I found about 15 scrapes in about 100 yards along an old log trail. At least you know some deer are around, but 99% of the scrapes you see now will be gone in a couple of weeks or less.
How many bucks does it take (to screw in a lightbulb ? HA) to make all of these scrapes ? Is one skinny buck creating 20 scrapes or is this indicative of a handful of bucks out there ?
ChuckC
I have seen a spike wandering along a logging trail and probably make 12 scrapes.
