Title: Need help fast!!
Post by: Jake Scott on October 16, 2013, 07:10:00 PM
Hey guys, I'm in a bit of a crisis here.  I'm leaving for an out of town hunt Friday after work.  This evening during my practice session my string broke.  No problem I says, went inside, got my spare string, and found my brace height (6 3/4 inches) and set my nock point 1/4 inch above center.  This is EXACTLY how I was set up with my old string. My arrow flight is terrible!!!!  I have moved my brace height and nock point both all over the place and got no real results.  A whole lot of side to side movement in flight.  Things got better at between 7 and 7 1/2 inches, but not anywhere near perfect like it was with my old string.  I will reiterate, my flight was PERFECT with the first string, and completely unacceptable with the new one.  I shoot 5575 goldtips 29.5 inches long BOP with 125's out of a 53# at 28 inch Foley recurve.  I am flustered and at the end of my tuning knowledge.  PLEASE HELP ME.

Jake

First thing , SLOW DOWN .

Tune one thing at a time , get your knock point close and then walk in your brace height . after that fine tune your knock point .

I have had that same problem trying to tune in a hurry , got flustered and couldn't do it .

Take your time , you know how to do it . Good luck .

Have you by chance changed your arrow rest or your side plate ? If the thickness of your side plate has changed that could be part of the problem . Possible limb damage too .

Thanks Graps, maybe you're on to something.  This hunt has a lot of promise and I am more than a little panicky.

The rest and side plate are the same, nothing changed.  There was no visible limb damage at all.

Your knock point sounds low . I would start 1/2" above your rest using a bow sq . As far as brace height where you are is common for a long bow , some recurves can go as high as 8" - 8 1/2

Were both strings the same; both fastflight or both B50?

Is the serving the same diameter? Do your nocks fit tighter or looser? Nock point both above and below the arrow on both strings?

How about string thickness at the serving?? Thats where I would begin.  :dunno:

i would immediately think of nock fir like sergio.

to loosen or tighten them, dip them in hot water then bend very gently.

should just be tight enough to hold the arrows weight in my view

Aha!  You guys are awesome.  Both strings are B-50, but I did notice a lot of difference when nocking my arrows.  The new one the nocks were much tighter.  Never even occurred to me to investigate that.  How do I fix it?

String is prob of different make or material.
Don't freak out. It will work out.
Take your time to tune the bow.
Good luck

Also, if you have different string silencers (or amount of silencer), that can effect your tuning.

Sounds like your serving dia. may be the culprit though.

Didn't think about tight knocks , that's probably what the problem is . Good catch Bladepeek

Either dip in hot water or sand them down.  I prefer using hot water.  Also give string a little time to stretch out.  Good luck

Don't forget a new B-50 string will stretch a bunch at first. Keep checking your brace height.

As So.Or. said, I prefer to warm them with hot water then I slide something tapered into the nock. I use the back edge of an old hair comb, don't overdo it or your arrows will be falling of your rest. They should be set so a light tap will release them. You should also enjoy some noise reduction as well.

The location of your string silencers can be critical, too, even if you are using the same style.
