I was able to sit a stand yesterday morning and was into the deer before sun-up.
By 8AM I had seen over a dozen doe/fawn. 20+ for the morning hunt.
Since I have started to build the Shrew bows for Mr. Ron LaClair, I decided that I would hunt with one this year. So I had a 49#@29" 56" classic in my hand. I draw 30"
Arrow was a full length AD Traditional. Broad head was a 185 Grizzly. Penetration was just at 30". The shot was a liver hit, so I left her until this morning.
Sorry, but I do not have any pics as she was in a tangled up mess of a swamp and once I went to her I brought her out in pieces. camera was on the shore.
The Shrew worked to perfection and put the arrow right where I wanted it to go. She turned just a tad at the shot I think and didn't give the angle I was looking for, but she is in the cooler and that is a good thing.
The shot was just about 27 paces from the tree, and the shaving sharp Grizz buried to mid-fletch fletch. The arrow broke or I think I could shoot it again as is. I will re-mount it and touch it with my file and continue on with it this fall. I like these heads a lot. Nice job Mr.Dunn.
Below is a shot of the deer in the swamp, see the white? Not far away just very thick and thorny. Also is the broken arrow
So,
My first deer for 2013
My first Shrew kill
My first Grizzly kill

Well, since I don't have pics. I will tell the rest of the story details.
Just before 8am, 3 deer entered the field from the East, they came out of the swamp. As I wait to see how they wanna play out, I look behind me and see three more heading my way.
The entered the woods I am setting on the edge of and then work toward me for a short distance more and then re-enter the corn field and keep heading my direction.
The two youngsters(doe and button buck) step up off the field and walk directly under my tree stand. The nubber was between the tree and my ladder, the doe fawn was maybe 3 paces to my left.
The big ole doe was at about 15yds but behind some limbs. Just as she clears the limbs she turned and headed away from me.
When she turns back broadside, I squeaked to get her to stop, the little nubber turns inside out and knocks into my ladder. No worries tho, my sights are locked on and the fingers hit anchor and the arrow is away. My fletch appeared right where I was looking.
I watched her make her way to the swamp and marked where she went in.
The arrow hit right where I wanted it to but she must have turned just a bit at impact, she went to far while I watched her so I knew my shot was not as intended. This ole girl was hanging on hard, so I decided to leave her alone until this morning and then found her just 25-30yds from where she went into the swamp.
The broadhead half of the arrow was only 10-11 steps from impact, and the fletch was maybe 30yds more.
I was worried about spoilage and yotes but everything is just fine. parts are in the cool garage and we shall eat high tomorrow, we have plans for this eve.
Thanks all,
CST
Congratulations on a your first Shrew harvest.
Waydago Chuck! Got yourself some fine dining.
Eric
Great story Chuck and good on you for giving her time. I would've loved to have seen the button buck's reaction when you squeaked. Too funny!
Matt,
I used to get so hung up on what the other deer might do that I would never get the shot. now I just trust my actions to do the work I planned for and let the chips fall where they may. I am very aware of the deer around me when its go time, but my attention is on the chosen one.
Once in awhile the whole field will clear just because of a little squeak. most of the time it works in my favor. I keep it very low in volume, and I only use it when I need to.
This particular little guy must be high strung though. I hope we can play again in a year or two or 4.
I hear ya. They are like us. Everyone of them is different and react differently. They have life experiences too that are all different.
Ps there's a box on its way to you.
