Title: Which buck do you prefer?
Post by: vermonster13 on September 08, 2007, 10:54:00 PM
A symmetrical typical or a nontypical?

Here typicals are all there is and I'd sure like to get a non one day preferably a droptine buck. Which do you like better?

I really would not care as long as it was within bow range

non-typical

Depends but either way I'm a sucker for heavy mass and long tines.  Especially super long brow tines....

Good example, the world record non typical from here in MO is (to me) a totally butt ugly rack and that is the world record.  Funny though, I've seen lots of non typicals in magazines that "looked" bigger to me.  I've seen replicas of the "Missouri Monarch" in person and just kinda thought Huh....oh well.

massive nontypical!

of course I wouldn't pass up a shot on either, but, if I could choose then I would rather have a huge typical.

Both sets of antlers cook equally well...the texture and taste of the antler broth is completely dependant upon the culinary skills of the harvester.

I often recommend sautee'ing the antlers at medium heat with shallots and nutmeg.

Serve with a light cabernet, and ensure that the tips of the antlers are presented in the tops of the bowl as it is served, and biscuits on the side are often a welcome addition.

But your tastes may differ...

Now back to your regular programming...

Never been much of a trophy hunter myself, but I do like the looks of a nontypical, crazy drop tine, or one with palmated antlers. They remind me of snakey character bows. The more crooked the better.   :D

Don't read more into it then is there guys. Just an honest question. I like to fill the freezer myself, but we are allowed to dream too and I have 4 more weeks of dreaming before season starts. lol

I want the BIG typical I been chasen for a few years. But I wouldn't pass up a nice non typical either. If I had several nice typicals I'd probably prefer a non typical. But for now I just like the looks of typicals better.

I'm just bein' funny...I really like the looks of an oddball non-typ myself.

My neighbor just came back with a 5x2 muley...looks like the rack was combined from 2 different critters!

See Ya,
Marc

*Pass the soup!!  LOL!!

I like to dream too, but I only have to for six more days.    :D

Okay, more dreaming on my part the season opens on  the 15th but, I prolly won't get any time to hunt for a while after that.

Vermonster,

Since we are dreaming.....I would love to see a heavy typical, with about 12 points and tips that nearly touch up front!

...back here in reality anything that is brown and has four legs!!!

The best of both. A massive 5x5 with double droptines! Booner class of course. (Whilst we're dreaming)

A typical/non-typical.I like a perfectly symetrical 12 pointer, average tine lenght around 12 inches or more with all kinds of crazy sticker points and droptines mixed in for effect. Some hellacious burrs scattered on the bases would be okay too.A little palmation and a hole in the horn and I would be pretty tickled.I mostly see deformed spikes though.A wild lookin atypical spike is on my hit list.I figure I got a descent chance where I hunt in MI.

I long for the good old days in Illinois.

I like big nontypicals but a 240" nontypical doesn't do as much for me as a 190" typical. That being said, I ain't passing either!

One of the coolest things about my last job at an archery store was registering deer (in WI you have to bring your deer to a registration station). That, coupled with the annual big buck contest we ran, allowed me to see some really awesome bucks. My favorites were always the gnarly nontypicals with drop point bucks being my highlight.

But, I would rank a huge, symetrical six or eight point as my coveted buck. I mean something like a 150+ six or eight point. I've seen a few eight pointers that were in that class or bigger but they are rare. I was also fortunate to see a monster (read: MONSTER) six point that was shot about 2 miles from the shop. I think it scored a net of 153 inches as a typical six point. No lie.. last I heard it was recognized as the largest six point ever harvested.

So to sum up, I would absolutely love to harvest a massive, symmetrical six or eight point. For a six or eight to get really big they have to have it all. Mass, length, height, they're just really impressive.

Of course, I haven't seen anything real big on the public land I hunt so I'll just continue to harvest whatever I'm fortunate to come across.

Chris

I like the freaks.  Messy tine mutations any day for me, more antlers just means more soup.  :bigsmyl:

I like typical racks with nice long drops coming off both beams!

So, Dave, go ahead and scout me one out for the 6th!  :bigsmyl:    :campfire:

Which ever one's the closest! I would'nt turn either one down. I like those non-typ's myself. Leonard.

My dream buck would be a 10 or 12 pt. with a huge spread like 30", symetrical and lots of mass. Or a droptine non-typical would be cool too.

Some non-typicalls are cool looking, but if I was ever going to shoot a big one, I tend to symmetrical.

Big massive non-typical does it for me.  Although wide and tall tined typical wouldn't hurt either.

The most magnificent buck I have ever seen in the Woods had double brow tines and double drop tines. He was, as far as I could tell after studying him from 40 yards with 10X50 binoculars, incredibly symetrical. If he had even a small sticker of a tine on one side it was on the other side. The double and double were just that too. He had jaw dropping mass and I have NO DOUBT he would have been the New World Record for anyone that was able to take him. Here is a question his appearance raised in me. If he is compltetly symetrical so there is limited, maybe 5/8", deductions is that really non-typical by the way they usually mean it?

There are some real trashy NT's out there, some I like some I don't. Can't say what makes the difference, probably balance, long tines and mass. Likewise a big Typical gets the old ticker spinning pretty good too. I do know that I can't help but feel a deer hunter who can't dream of "Big" deer, just doesn't seem to me to have much soul. Heck I like tenderloin and venison stew as well as anyone, but it's the lure of the next encounter with a big buck that really keeps me going to the deer woods each fall. If it was just the meat, I'd buy a hog, or a quarter of beef, certainly cheaper

I'd rather have the non typical as they are a lot rarer.

A friend shot an 8 point DOE.  That's not exactly typical...

C2 some deer can be measured both ways, but only one score could be entered in the book if that was someone's intention. There would be deductions from a typical with junk on his rack. In my eyes the kickers and drops add character to the rack just as palmation does.

David, can we look at em both first? LOL Seriously, make mine a 180 typ, with some junk to knock the score down a little.........

I'm with the nontypical types, this was goliath. He was a pen rasied deer, but kind of give's a idea of how unique they really are. And lets ya dream a little of whats possiable.

Serious junk, but wow what a deer!

I myself would love a big typical 20"s wide 25" main beams and tines from 5"s for brows to 10-12"s for the rest an 8,10 or 12, I would not be fussy. I have a non-typical, but nothing spectacular. shawn

Give me a "Busted-Up" 6 or 8 pointer any day!!!!!

I'll take a "Fighter" over a "Movie Star" any day of the season!!!!! I want a buck with the "nuggets" to stand and FIGHT!!!!! When that big old "perfect" 12 pointer comes out into the field and "shakes his rack" little old "Busted-Horn" comes running over and and KICKS HIS TAIL!!!!!

(or at least gives it his best shot, and makes the big boy wonder if he really IS the baddest buck in the woods)

I can get alot more nocks and knife handles out of a nice NT, which is what I would really like to harvest. I would get more enjoyment out of the rack that way(besides, mounts are EXPENSIVE!)
If I was dreaming of the ultimate tropy mount, I would definitely go for the perfect typical. With matching droptines...OH YEAH....

I've seen some non-typicals that aren't so good looking and I have seen some typicals that aren't so good looking. There is just something about a heavy symetrical muley or blacktail that does it for me. I have seen a handful of non-typical muleys that look great. So, to answer your question, it depends on the formation of the rack.

If I have to choose, I'll take the non-typical. Either would be awesome, but I've never even seen a non-typical in the woods.

My dream deer is a symetrical (is that right  :bigsmyl:  ) ten point.  My dad has always wanted to shoot one and has been unable to do so.  Now he has rotator cuff problems and can no longer shoot a bow and I hope to hang one on the wall for him in thanks of all he has done for me.
