Title: Bug Repellent?
Post by: britt on October 08, 2013, 11:30:00 AM
I had my first evening out deer hunting. The bugs ate me up. What do all use that has no scent? Thanks

Don't worry about it.  Get downwind and you can use anything.  Last year, my thermocell crapped out on a hunt and I had to use deet.  Had a doe within 10 yds but upwind.  She was fine until she circled around, got downwind and got my scent.

So how do you use the thermacell? Turn it on and carry it in your pocket? I'm not familiar with it.

I usually don't turn mine on until I'm on stand.  Wouldn't put one in my pocket, but the pouches they have for them have a belt clip on them.
I firmly believe the Thermacell is one of the greatest thing to happen for warm weather hunters in many, many, many years.

Another thermacell endorsement. From the ground just set it next to you, in a tree I hang it from a close limb or tree step.

Thermacell, buy the holster and just hang it from your beltloop.  You can also use peramone on clothing.  This will repel ticks.  You have to spray clothes and boots the night before, this is insectacide.  It works well.

Thermacell!!!  I hunt on the ground and when I find a place to stop it saves my $ss literally- cept its worthless for yellow flies.  As far as sprays I use Herbal Armor, its all natural uses rosemary and lemongrass oils- smells 'herbal', critters ought to be fine with it.  Downwind is the key.  I get close to critters just being mindful of that.

I'm a big fan of termacell for mosquitos, permethrin (treat clothes) for ticks, and in a pinch I keep a bottle of Cedarcide in my pack to keep the Mosquitos at bay if the thermacell quits on me. The latter also also acts as a decent cover scent too if the winds are swirly.

I use "Bens" almost exclusively. I have used it in Canada and on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and the bugs leave me alone.  Just don't get it on any paint as it will soften it up.

This thread is the first I've heard of cedarcide, but I suspect it's very similar to a product I love. It's just a spray on cedar oil product and works pretty well. It's great on repelling chiggers and works fairly well on mosquitoes and the like as well. I have a Thermacell new in the box that I traded for a while back and have never opened. After reading the recent thread on Thermacell tips, I was seriously considering soaking a pad in the cedar oil to see how it works. Anyway, link here:  http://www.cedarcreekcamo.com/products/cedar-oil/8-oz
