Title: Ivory soap for wood arrows
Post by: McDave on October 06, 2013, 04:55:00 PM
A friend showed me this trick at the Petaluma trad shoot.  Ivory soap rubbed on wood shafts makes them easy to remove from 3D targets.  He gave me 1/4 of a bar to carry in my pocket.  Just rub it on the first 4" or so of the shaft every 4-5 shots similar to the way you would rub wax on a string.  Seems more convenient, and certainly cheaper, to me than commercial products made for the purpose.  Maybe other brands of soap would work as well, but Ivory is what he had.

I used to carry a bar of soap(any bar of soap will work) around for 3D shoots. It made arrow removal easier in the foam targets with my wood arrows.I also used a small tube that I put in a couple of pieces of foam soaked with Armour All.I would just slide my arrow in and lube up the front 8" of my wood arrow,it made removal easier.

Soap works pretty good.  I use a bar from a hotel.

McDave, We were at Petaluma. You should have dropped by the Legends Bows Both and said hi. It was a great weekend.

Lets see: It could give you a clean release. A clean kill or a clean miss. It could also give you more bubbles in the blood on a good lung shot. LOL I don't see any down side to it!

Thanks for the tip.  I have been concentrating my practice with my wood arrows and broadheads on a 3d target and it is taking a toll on my arrows.

Hi Michael,

I did spend some time looking over the very fine collection of bows you brought to Petaluma.  If I had spent any more time than I did, I'm sure I would have walked away with one of them and would have had a much lighter wallet!

Good to know.
I have a 3" X 5" piece of bike innertube, just grip the shaft with the rubber and the point might come off before your hand slips. Put a small cord thru one corner, to make it easier to retrieve from your pocket. If you have large hands, wrap it around the shaft first. Works wet or dry.

Ivory soap is good for everything, but this one is news to me.

I have used Ivory soap for troutline bait for catfish. I have also used it for hunting soap for years, until A5 started selling his soap

The best part is when you are shooting or hunting in the rain and you shoot you will get bubbles coming off your rest from all the soap residue!

Ivory soap works for any shaft material.  I keep a couple bars on hand at our 3D shoots for anyone that may need it.
