Title: Thinning the herd using smoke
Post by: The Night Stalker on October 06, 2013, 04:09:00 PM
I had a friend come over in attempt to thin the herd. I put Jeff on the food plot stand. It  is for shooting does. I went to a new tree  closest to the house.  I had a doe show up with good size twin fawns. She was just a little to far and they were heading in Jeff's direction.  I waited and herd some commotion. In the meantime I seen a lone doe coming in. I studied her from a far to make sure she was not a spike. She walked within 20 yards a was really nervous. Jeff does beekeeping so we used his smoker to treat our clothes prior to the hunt. The wind was blowing towards her. I half stood and shot through a maple. The arrow hit her high as she reacted. She was angled forward, so the arrow went through the top of her shoulder and hit her cervical spine as she ducted. She dropped and I quickly knocked another arrow stood up and dispatched her. I dragged her down the hill and went to check on Jeff.  I seen an arrow sticking in the food plot. I walked over thinking it was his practice judo but when I pulled it out of the dirt, it was a three blade VPA.  He said there was another up further.  I found another missed shot.  He seen 8 all together.  He missed a really old doe that really needs to be harvested. It was a good time and we will do it again when the weather cools. This is Jeff's first year hunting with his Tall Tines that we found on the classifieds. It is warm for our area so I butchered her this
morning before it warmed up.

Wayne, I should of just stood up and shot as she came in.  I will have to try the smoke thing again. Remember Doug in elk camp holding his clothes over the fire and he shot the cow on the ridge down wind.
The cooler is a large icy-tec that I bought a few years ago for that reason. I have put two large does in there and packed them in ice until I can get to them in case of warm weather.

My son swears that if he uses right guard and aftershave (axe) he doesn't have a problem with deer sensing him from downwind.

I gave up on all the gadgets except for showering with "unscented" soap before the hunt.

But no one should change what they are doing based on my results.

When packed in elk hunting, I also use the smoke. Can't say it helped... but can't say it didn't.

It did not bother the deer, they were back in the food plot yesterday in force.  Were think about trying again on Friday. Neither of us are on call. Hoping for a cool NW wind.
