In my search for a custom I think I have it narrowed down to a 50's style recurve. The 50's style recurves are very simple and appealing to me. I was wondering what bowyers are the "go to's" for these style recurves. I am looking to something silky smooth, quiet, and dead in the hand. Not looking to brake the bank either if all possible.
Thank you,
Josh
Mike Dunnaway of Wild Horse Creek Bows makes two such bows. Will send a PM with his contact info.
Kota Bows makes a Kill-Um recurve
Toelke Chinook
I did take a look at the killum, liked the look and the price. How do you like the killum recurve?
Fox Breed is the one I let get away and want back!
The Kota Killum is a great bow. I would still have mine but I just can't shoot narrow grips well.
Toelke just came out with a sweet looking static recurve.
A few more,
Kohanna Kurve
Saxon selkirk
Great northern super ghost
Vintage works. Or bear archery. They just re-introduced the 59. Its awesome!
Great Northern Ghosts are pretty fine 50s style recurves.
Then of course, original 50s bows are pretty fine as well. You can buy a 57 Kodiak for $250 or less and it will shoot right with any bow mentioned above.
Trap
Whisperstick Mojostick by JD Lund. I have one now I'm hooked and want one of his Voodoosticks.
Toelkes are sweet
I think the best 50's style recurve is a 1960 Kodiak...I paid 325 bucks for my last one, a very nicely refinished 64 inch
DDave
Mahaska!!
Toelke is a good choice too. Or Fox.
St Joe river bow.....

glenn
Fox Breed.
I am happy with mine.

Wild Horse Creek bows are hard to beat when it comes to shooting or eye candy.Mike is also a great guy with a lot of pride in his work.

I love the bow, have a thread on here about it, picked it up in June. Easy to shoot bow. Tim had a handful at a shoot I was at and I grabbed one.
Kohannah Kurve is the best one I've shot. I liked it far better than the GN Super Ghost I had.
Chad Holme. River Runner recurve. Great bow and great price. Chad is also a sponsor.
Look at the new Bear Kodiak 59
I have a Kohanna Kurve and I love it. It's the only bow of that style that I've shot, so I can't say whether it's better or worse than any other. But I certainly do enjoy shooting it. Bought it off a fine gentleman here on TradGang, in fact.
Ive had a Kohanna Kurve, a GN super Ghost, a Toelke Chinook, and a BW PSR. They wee all great shooters, you wont go wrong with either. They're all decent priced, well, the PSR can be if you pick one up used. I was surprized by how much I liked the Super ghost, and the Chinook was probably the better shooter out of the four.
I have a couple Mojostiks,56".They are smooth, easy to shoot and very quiet.
I also have a Vintage Works 59 replica but generally when people ask about a '50's style recurve, they aren't asking about that type bow.

There is a good-looking McCullough 59er for sale on TradGang right now. McCullough makes a heck of a bow.
this is also my favorite type of bow. you should look hard at the RER Retro. i love mine.
i also have a really short Sheepeater Spirit that shoots great too.
i looked hard at the Fox Breed, Kota Killum,, Kohanna Kurve and Maddog Retro as well.
I have seriously tried hard to own every 50s style recurve ever made over the years.Thier are many excellant choices no doubt.
This 2 PC. Whippenstick Inferno I shoot is right at the top of the list for me.It only comes in 62 inch length though.
Take a look at it along with some if these other fine choices.

St Joe River Bows. I love my 2piece recurve that they made for me a couple of years ago. I like you am a fan of the 50's style simplicity of bow.
Love my Fox Breed. I'd like to pick up another one but a 2pc version. I'll get one hopefully within the next few months but I'm going to order a Royal Crown and Maverick first.
Those are my favorite style of bow. I really like the Kohannah Kurve and I have a custom Northern Mist Ottawa that is just awesome. Fast, smooth draw, and dead quiet.
I have a Toelke Chinook and love it
Herb Mealand of pronghorn is making them again.
some great bows mentioned, the Fox Breed and Toelke Classic Chinook are the 2 I would focus on.
Maddog - Retro Recurve  one of the quietest, fastest bows I've every shot!
My Kota-killum, can't go wrong. (//%5Burl=http://imgur.com/lVKs0mV%5D%20%5Bimg%5Dhttp://i.imgur.com/lVKs0mV.jpg) [/IMG]
Ed Holcomb 59 replica!.
The new bear and vintage works are nice,, but the craftsmanship of Ed Holcomb is second to none! A performer too!
An oldie, but a goodie:
"Shawnee Stalker" (//%5Burl=http://imgur.com/BXFRVBI%5D%20%5Bimg%5Dhttp://i.imgur.com/BXFRVBI.jpg) [/IMG]
I like the Bear Super Grizzly great bow with little to no wait and very quick nice bow.
Mike Dunnaway of Wild Horse Creek bows builds two models. My bro just ordered one and I ordered his 60" Kestrel. He makes the prettiest performing longbows and 50s recurves I have shot. His force draw charts are amazing.
another vote for the Kohannah Kurve
Toelke Chinook. Quietest bow I've ever shot. Good performance. Great grip.
commanche static by Curtis byrd no longer made but sometimes you see one for sale in the classified
I had a beautiful 50's style from Dick Boss I bought from a fellow TradGanger. Sold it to one of my best friends about six years ago, and despite having a bunch of bows now, he won't sell it back for any amount of money :)
Still the quietest recurve I've ever heard, and really flings an arrow!
Not sure if Rivers Edge Recurves (RER) is classified as a 50's style recurve. But I have one of their arroyos and love it. I would say it is definitely worth a peak

Maddog
I've owned a Jim Reynolds' Ramhorn, several Kohannah Kurves(great!), a Mahaska, and a Northern Mist Ottawa(awesome!).
They are all very good to excellent.
Probably the smoothest shooting recurve I've owned though was a 1959 Bear Grizzly.
As my handle name says, the Mojostick is hard to beat. I shot all of Jim's bows (aka JD) and owned a bunch and I found the 62" Mojostick to shine the best. Others with different draws like the shorter bows.
I've also had Dan Toelke make Chinooks for me. I'm not sure you can find a better "new" 1950's bow.
But then again, if you want a 1950's recurve, why not seek out a real 1950's recurve? I understand Bear made a bunch of them. ;) If you don't want a beat up old bow or the high price of a mint original, there's a lot of great refinished 1950's bows out there that are magazine cover worthy. Just a thought.
Does Mike Dunaway at Wild Horse Creek Bows have a web-site?
How about a Red Wing Hunter?
In 1957 the recurve world changed overnight. Can still be had for $100 to $150 and perform as well as new $700 bows.
Mike Dunaway does not have a website. But I'm sure he'd b more than willing to speak with you over the phone. Real nice guy.
Real nice bows too.

RER Retro or Pronghorn. I own an RER and it shoots very well. I've shot the Pronghorn and it shoots just as good.
