Title: Early October Cold Fronts
Post by: Riegel on October 04, 2013, 05:27:00 PM
I was wondering what kind of experiences and insight you all could give me on cold fronts that pass through early in October.

I will be hunting public land this weekend with a nice front monving in on saturday. Where would you consider some of the best places to set up? Crops, bedding areas, hardwoods (lots of acorns), ect...?

Thank you,
Josh

Your not going to see flurry of movement like you would during the end of oct or nov. I would just hunt my normal feeding areas. Or deer coming out of or going into bedding. Only thing that mite work is they be moving earlier in the evenings

Yea I understand I most likely wont be seeing as much activity as I would during the rut. Though with that being said, I remember last year early october I had one of my best hunts as far as seeing deer movement during a cold front.

If the front brings in a good rain be on stand right as it lets up.
Like always if you have any travel corridors that's the place to be.

What macbow said. I think it always a good idea to hunt a cold front now matter what part of the season. Get in right before or after. It definitely gets the deer up and moving to feed.

Cold fronts usualy kick the movement up a notch!!!

Usualy, gets them putting the feedbag on, however... DO NOT overlook the possibility of alittle "chasing" either!!!!! The sudden cold snap flips the trigger in a bucks brain (if only briefly) but the does are not ready.

This usualy starts the rumors of an "early rut"

Whatever the reason... After a cold snap is DEFINATLY a time to be in the woods!!!!!

Or, it can move the elk into lower country. This pic taken on Sept 28 in the Bighorns.

We have a cold front over us right now but the wind is blowing 30 to 50. Went out last night and saw nothing moving. I think after this clears there will be a lot of movement. West of us got 40 plus inches of snow, glad that missed us.

A cold front in combination with the right moon phase can be a lethal combination. It's something to witness when it all comes together.
