Title: Which file for broadheads?
Post by: S. Brant Osborn on October 02, 2013, 08:20:00 PM
Need to buy a file for sharpening Magnus and zipper heads.  Which one do I buy?  And what size is best?

I can get my VPA 3 blades sharp without one but I think a file will
Work best on the 2 blades.

Personally I prefer a really big file-Nicholson mill bastard.

Nicholson or Grobet both make excellent mill bastard files.  They work very well for sharpening two or three blade heads.

Just make sure it's a single cut file, I picked up a double cut once by not paying attention and wasn't impressed.

Find a file that says "mill smooth"  finer cut than a mill bastard.

I recommend two, a Nicholsen 8" mill bastard with a handle to move some metal, and a 6" flat chain saw file to sharpen with. I like the one from Stihl.  Both are single cut (mill file) and the Stihl looks to be a second cut, smoother than a bastard cut.  Don't waste your money on a Made in India or China file.

I like a 12" Mill for initial sharpening then switch to the same model Stihl that Fletcher uses for the final sharpening.
