Title: Mississippi Hunt/ Kill Thread 2013-14 season
Post by: graybarkhunter on September 30, 2013, 07:58:00 PM
Breaker Breaker 1..9.. Can I get a radio check.. Just a few hours until the sun comes up on our 13-14 deer season and wanted to start it out ... Post up kills, thrills, misses, kisses, blood and mud.  Detailed stories are nice but pics are worth 10,000 words.. Let us all be safe and remember who makes the sun rise and set on us in the MS woods. Pick a hair and let it loose!!

Doe down with the new Tall Tines. Meat in the freezer. The Simmons tree shark almost passed completely through her at 25 yds    It entered high in the spine and was such a wide cut hit her spine and she took 3 steps and collapsed. I got down and quickly dispatched her. Man was it hot!!!

Was a tough weekend saw little deer movement. Nothing like 100% humidity and as sopping wet as if you had just gotten out of the shower all afternoon long.  Hope to get a hunt in this aft hopefully be better after the front.

Same here. If the front clears out they may move this evening, but it is still a bit nasty here now.

Tomorrow should be great though, so I'm going to be up a tree for the afternoon.

Sunday evening Sixer. The cooler temps had our deer up and moving and was able to get an arrow in this buck at 8yds with my Widow KB 56' 52@28 . 250 gr Abowyer Large Bonehead. Ran 75 yds and gave up. I got a baby girl due anyday now so I will have to put the Widow down for a lil' while and pick up diapers and baby wipes but it'll be worth it. I might be down for a little while, but I'm not out...    (http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg561/graybarkhunter/sixer1_zps1db01a38.jpg) (http://s1244.photobucket.com/user/graybarkhunter/media/sixer1_zps1db01a38.jpg.html)   (http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg561/graybarkhunter/sixer_zpscff95c06.png) (http://s1244.photobucket.com/user/graybarkhunter/media/sixer_zpscff95c06.png.html)   (http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg561/graybarkhunter/lung_zps940674e3.jpg) (http://s1244.photobucket.com/user/graybarkhunter/media/lung_zps940674e3.jpg.html)

Went today and made a day out of it, seen one doe this morning downwind of me and that didn't last long before the gig was up.  The morning was a little cooler if you call 67 cool but down here it is welcome although it was short lived as the temps reached mid 80's by around 2pm.

My buddy seen 4 tonight but no shots.  In the last 2 days (yesterday was a scout day) we made contact with 14 cottonmouth moccasins I'll say no more to protect those sensitive to harming these harmless reptiles   :scared:

I had a Fawn and Nanny under me tonight the Fawn came in unheard due to the wet ground or my bad hearing and the Nanny was a few seconds behind it and I moved at the wrong time.  I would have passed anyway but I would have like to have done it on my terms    :saywhat:

I just got busted a few minutes ago by a doe. I went to draw, and the spike that was with her (that I had assumed was too dumb to bust me) spotted me and spooked. Oh well.

Ok, been swamped and now got some pictures of the horns. Bear with me on this story.

It has been HOT, Real HOT down here the first part of October. Opening day it was so hot, i did not want to even sit in the tree, between the mosquitoes, humidity and finicky wind, the first afternoon was awful. Not enjoyable at all for me.

A couple of days later my dad, brother and i posted up again in a couple of different spots and all saw deer. I had 2 shots at does and missed both. 1 at 22 yards and other at 8. Needless to say i was upset, mad and starting to question my form, release, BOW and all of my equipment. I believe that was on a Sunday. My brother(graybarkhunter)killed that afternoon and was happy as a lark. I was happy for him because he was about to have his first baby and i knew i would be able to pull away in this race of kills that all brothers try to achieve:)

That night i got home and sent an email to a Tradganger on here Mike about a bow that i had asked him about back in August. I immediatly purchased it and said it needed to be here before the weekend preferably by Friday because i was planning on going after a deer that my brother and dad had see on 2 different occasions. 2 days later my brother had his little girl and i knew he was out for a while. Keeping dad off the spot was not going to happen so i just let it ride and hoped that the bow would come before Friday so i could tune her and go.

I saw a thread a while back on Timberghost Hybrids. I was intrigued and decided to do research and ask as many people as i could on the bow and how it performed. From all the info i decided to put a want ad on here. I had 2 offers. I talked to Mike Spaulding numerous time as well as Kent from Timberghost and both were unbelievable in helping me.

I dont know about you guys but i am an impulsive buyer, and a guy told me once not to make any decisions when you are mad because it might come back to haunt you. It did not matter, i was pissed and did not blame my Cheyenne for the doe misses, it was operator error BUT it did give me a reason to buy a new bow! So i emailed Mike and told him the situation, he said he would have it here if possible.

I wanted to wire the money to him so he would ship as soon as possible. He would not have it and said that he trusted me and would stick it in the mail Tuesday, BEFORE MY CHECK EVEN SHOWED UP. Unbelievable!

He mailed it Tuesday, sent me the tracking number. I checked Wed and it was still up north somewhere.
Thurs morning i checked track again, OUT FOR DELIVERY.

My Postman usually runs between 12 and 1. needless to say i was at the house from 11:45 till 1:15. No mail truck anywhere. I drove around the neighborhood stalking him. Finally at 230 i found him about 2 miles from my house and he flagged me down because over the years, he knows what is in the tube or box.

Got to house shot it few times and really liked it. Got it tuned as as well as i could with brother help and felt good. I wanted to really start over with new arrows but i just felt like i was good or good enough. It hit where i was looking ,so on and so on.

Tuned up, Centaur big games sharpened and thermocell refueled. Friday i left work early and met dad at the farm and told him i was going to go after the buck that he had seen on Wed. He said go ahead, we had pictures the day before at around 6 pm and he was in there. There is no way that he will come back i thought.

 (http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy160/Dmosal1/13buck_zps312ab954.jpg) (http://s787.photobucket.com/user/Dmosal1/media/13buck_zps312ab954.jpg.html)

Here he is the day before, so i knew where i thought he might be coming from and was ready at 415.

5:05 i am texting with Widowdoublelung,Spurs, dad and Graybarkhunter just killing time when i look up and see a body move thru a patch of sunlight.
Picked up binos and saw his rack and knew it was him. He was coming straight down the trail he was supposed to in the food plot. The trail he entered on was at 20 yds coming straight on so he entered the field and walked to within 13 yds but was facing me the entire time.

Intense is about the only word there is to describe the situation because he was looking thru me or under me, i was not sure but standing up waiting on a broadside turn felt like 20 minutes but was probably only about 2. So i was looking away just trying to keep my Sh**&%t together so that i would not look at his horns all the while using my periphrial vision to notice a turn one way or the other for a shot.

Finally, he turns to his left, i draw, anchor and loose.
Slightly quartering away, my first thought was oh no it is a little high but being so close it should lodge down in.

The arrow hits, sinks in about 15 inches and stops, no pass thru and arrow sticking out at 45 degree angle with green lighted nock flashing while running off hitting trees. I saw last tree he ran by and he disappeared and seconds after i lost sight, i heard him bellowing like he was dying while running up a small hill. Kind of struggling.

Like i said , my first thought was HIGH and no pass thru BUT when i heard him bellow i felt better and honestly thought he was dead within 100yds.

Long story short, we came back 2 hours later and found zero blood, arrow, hair, deer, green lighted nock, nothing. I came back with my 4 year old the next morning and did another search to no avail. We were sick and again i was second guessing my equipment, release , form etc.

I did not know what to do. Told my neighbor that i had shot one and be on the lookout for buzzards. All hope was lost, i even hunted the same spot 4 days later to look for buzzards.

This past friday i get a text from my neighbor and this is what it was.

I could not believe it. That was him and his caretakers had found him next to his lake which was about 700 yds from where i shot him with my arrow still in him. He was severely decomposed and cutting the horns off is a another story.

I was pumped to say the least and have not had another shot at a deer since. HaHa, doesnt matter because my confidence is back up and with the Timberghost coming thru, i cant say it is the equipment. It is an awesome bow to say the least. Thanks Mike

Great buck! Glad you ended up finding him. May not have been the way you wanted it to happen but that's the way it goes sometimes. Reminds me of a buck I killed a couple years ago. Shot him almost right under my tree and only got one lung because of the steep angle. I knew he was down and ended up finding but not before the coyotes did.
Glad you're liking the bow, sounds like it found a good home!

That's a great deer! glad you found him and way to whack those does boys! I have a similar story but with no happy ending. I have debated even telling this but I will. I have just been sick to my stomach ever since.

Friday evening I hunted a spot of public land here in Starkville that I had only been to one time in the past. Long story short, at about 6:20 I look up and see a good buck coming my way.  He was a solid 8 with high antlers and at least a 3 year old maybe more.  Well he decided to flank me and walk a logging road and not come in. I had one hole at about 35 yards. I stopped him in it and drew back. My form and shot felt perfect except for one key thing.  In the heat of the moment I rushed the shot, I guess cuz I didn't think he would stand there long, and didn't completely touch my anchor on my face. The shot was perfect up and down but I hit him forward in the shoulders.

He tore out and I backed out and came back 4 hours later with my buddies. I was shooting tree sharks and when hit blood and he started pooring. We trailed him through a clear-cut and he was pumping out both sides. We probably trailed him for close to a mile it seemed and never found him.  He eventually clotted up and the blood quit.  Went back the next day and didn't find anything.  I hope he'll make it but man am I sick. This is the only deer I've even drew back on since my buck opening day and too say its a blow to my confidence is an under statement. Just gotta get back at it tho.

No luck thus weekend, but i managed to do some scouting and found some good white oaks. Hope to get to hunt them later in the week.

On another note, any if you guys left handed? My buddy has gotten interested in trad, but since he's a lefty he can't really try out my bow. I was hoping there might be a MS tradganger in the area who is left handed.

I had an interesting hunt yesterday that turned out well. I had a stand near a pin oak that the deer were hammering. No matter what I did I would get winded as the deer would always circle down wind. To give myself a better chance I hung a dirty T shirt in the oak and moved my stand down wind about 50 yards. This fat old girl stopped by for a little sniff.

My buddy Wade  killed a nanny on my place a couple weeks ago. He is a TX boy and is not used to hunting where he can't see a feeder. This is his first MS deer. I hope it won't be his last as I intend to continue shooting critters on his place here in TX. We were watching the solunar tables and it called for midday movement. He sat from Before daylight till 1:30 PM when he made the shot.  Perfect heart shot with a great 60 yd blood trail.
 (http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/image-3.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/image-3.jpg.html)

The conception date data is interesting. My place is in the north end of Warren county and I still have a bunch of spotted fawns. There are older fawns too but a lot of little ones. We also have a lot of deer like the one Wade killed. She was about 80 LBs. Too big to be this year's fawn but not nearly 1.5 years yet. Generally a yearling doe will weigh north of 100# there. My bet is she was born about  October last year putting her conception date right around April.  We are seeing a lot of of this in my area. Another buddy killed a 100# button buck in October. I wonder if we are hammering the big does a little hard and maybe fawns are coming in late and getting bread?

I'm from perry county and last year the latest report of a doe being bred  was in March during turkey season. We start seeing fawns in august and most years we are still season some with spots around Christmas it seems to be very spread out down here and I imagine it's like that for a lot of other areas too.

I had a great hunt Sunday. I went to a stand that has always been good but saw no sign. Decided to relocate and on the walk out stumbled across a very hot spot. I backed up against a gnarly Osage and waited about 10 minutes and did a long grunt with my mouth. I heard a noise and shifted to my right but saw nothing. Looking back to my left was a nice buck walking straight to me at less than 20 yards. He stopped , hooked a limb and started a scrape. He was pissed. He then turned broadside at 10 yards. I took careful aim and sailed a hand made sitka shaft over his back. It would have been perfect had he been 40 yards out. I love it.

Actually I switched bows yest.  I had not killed a deer with my widow I got last march.  Black and white ebony 57@28 "Black Death" .   I would say its first hunt was a memorable one.

Love the Widow. Last but not least is this guy from last Thursday. Huge 8 with some stickers off the base and brows. Used my Thunderchild on this hunt. Bonus buck, never knew he was in area. Been a very good year!    (http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc447/swinestalker1/436c83a6-42e9-47e3-9e11-ccb181d2df32.jpg)

Natural hide I built in a pinch point between 2 large creek bottoms under a magnolia tree. Saw 11 deer the first time I hunted it and him the second day.

what are you hunting post rut? food sources or funnels?
Title: Re: Mississippi Hunt/ Kill Thread 2013-14 season

Funnels from bedding to feeding.  The edge of thick travel areas.  Cutovers are usually really good that time of year also eating whats left of the greenbriar.

Me thinks 20th - 6th might be a bad time to be a deer in Will's neck of the woods!

Some little ones chasing next 10 days will be the time. Could be best visible rut in years. Given the weather.

well I dont know what happened but the bucks are still working scrapes every night. used a can to call up a 2 year old 8 point and he seemed uninterested once he got there. just kind of wandered off. we havent seen much chasing at all but granted we dont have any deer this year either but we always pull a ton off neighboring properties this time of year. Been a crazy year
