hey guys, I have recently started archery, with a club, mainly because I want to get into hunting. Everyone I talked to said, "You need a compound. No-one ever uses trad for hunting successfully." I figured people had been for 1000's of years. I also reckon the simpler something is the less bits to go wrong. The problem is my club, although experienced, is all about target shooting. Stand side on, use the sights etc etc etc. I read the newbies post but am looking for more good resources to get form for hunting right. It seems like it would be hard to stalk standing side-on. Oh yeah, hello from NZ

daddymonster, most of the guys who bash trad archery are just speaking out about that which they do not know. You are correct in thinking trad gear was used to feed mankind for thousands of years and still works today.
You will gets lots of good advice on this forum and most of it will revolve around a few major points:
1. Get equipment that you can handle - don't over bow yourself.
2. Tune well.
3. Practice diligently, always paying attention to form, and realize that traditional bowhunting is a close range affair.
4. Also, practice from stances and elevated locations that you are likely to encounter in the field.
5. Have confidence in your ability to learn to shoot well - it won't come overnight, but it will come.
6. When the time comes, PICK A SPOT!
7. All this time study the animals you wish to hunt so that when you go to the field, you will not be totally ignorant of the game.
8. Use trad gang as it can be a valuable resource.
9. Most importantly, HAVE FUN! Repeat, it should always be fun.
You will get a lot more detailed info from guys as you pose specific questions, but the basic concepts here will get you going in the right direction. Good luck and welcome to trad archery.
Welcome to the gang! You can definitely kill things with traditional bows :biglaugh: and you came to the right place. You should also get in touch with your local New Zealand Bowhunters Society, PM sent.

Hi, don't feel too alone, I am in the same boat. Where abouts are you? I am in Whakatane, Bay of Plenty. I am working hard with my recurve with a goal of taking deer but getting help is hard. Mostly Olympic style at the club.
Anyhoo if I can help at all, just let me know.
There are several Tradgang members from New Zealand.
Maybe you folks can find a way to hook up even if it's just by the telephone.
Welcome to the tradgang family. :campfire:
God bless,Mudd :archer:

In the right hands a trad bow can be deadlier than any other weapon.
You dont have to be able to split nocks , but shoot consistant and a comfortable distance.
One important lesson I figured out is that shooting targets is a lot different than shooting an animal,
