I just use beeswax

I get it from a local Gentleman at our regional market.

You can use bees wax and toilet bowl ring to make string wax, not sure how much of each you could probably web search it or some here will chime in.

I've done the bowl wax with bees wax and it pretty much sucks. It works but if you've used good string wax there is no comparison.  I used a recipie that some one posted like 50/50 or some thing like that. Beeswax and rosine like good string makers wax is all I use now because I'm making bunches of strings and it works the best for twisting strings. I don't have the recipie but if you find one with rosine that is the one you want to make. Dino

I have been discussing wax with others recently, I did use a wax left over from kids drinks, the kind that have been filled with some small drink, I mixed it with toilet wax and vegetable oil, it was smooth, and penatrated well.

I use 2-parts beeswax, 1-part toilet ring wax. Just the right amount of tackieness for making strings.

Bee's wax and toilet bowl ring. Mix to get the degree of tackiness you want.  That's the key to a good string maker's wax--hard enough that it doesn't gob up on the string, soft enough that it holds the strands together and is sticky enough to give you some "traction" for the twist.

I don't remember how I mix it...I have it written down somewhere.  I do a bunch when I make it, because it can make a mess.  Last time the base was...either 25# or 50# of bee's wax...I think 50#...don't remember how many toilet bowl rings.  The brand of toilet bowl seal you use might make a difference--not sure there.
