Well, the early archery season is finally here. It opened this morning in the NY northern zone. The southern zone archery season opens next Tuesday for most of the area. Good luck to everyone and please hunt safe. I will be in the mountains this afternoon. Yeehaw!
The new Oct.1st opener kinda takes some of the "fun" outa opening day,LOL!!!
We all used to head up to Kenny's for a "jumpstart" the last weekend in Sept. Gather up all last years tags, roam the mountain, eat like pigs, and yes... drink!!! It was a celebration, a reunion, and a grand time!!!!! Then... It was a 2 week wait for the southern zone opener.
Now, it's 3 days!!!!! I still get as excited as a kid at Christmas before opening day!!! But, I miss the old days.....
Looking forward to my first evening hunt of the year today.I've got everything ready to go and just need the deer to co-operate.. Good luck to everyone...Mike
Gotta say Ron I am quite jealous!
A couple of the guys at school came in late to class because they just got a doe this morning.
I have to wait until Tuesday the first....
Oh well, soon enough
Good luck all you bowhunters!
Heading to Columbia county for the Oct. 1 opener, can't wait.
I may not get out till I get back from Missouri, but good luck to those who do. Enjoy the fall woods and pick a spot!!

Thanks Ron and everyone, I may not get out till the first weekend myself. Best wishes for an :) enjoyable and bountiful season to all my fellow NY trad hunters. :)
Good luck up North!
Well I'm sitting in my stand as I type. Came out for the evening after I got out of work. Finally got a job after doing school the last 1.5 yrs. Been out several days with my bow bear hunting. Hoping the nice 6 pointer comes back. He was under my stand 10 yards away broadside for 5 minutes last week. I guess he had his days screwed up. LOL. Good luck to all.
Good luck and be safe. Wear a full body harness when in a tree. Watch for ticks. Pick a spot and may your arrow fly true.
I know of One arrow loosed at a NZ Deer so far. :readit:
Hopefully that fella will be along with a story tomorrow.
Waiting.......... :coffee:
i will be hunting with Adirondackman bright and early tomorrow on my favorite mountain! good luck to all!!!!!!!!!!
Hmmm, DANG Brother!!! I was SURE it was you.....
Good Luck fellas...I hope to see some awesome success stories....and I hope mine is one of them :archer:
best of luck and skill to all and be safe and enjoy the hunting season.

Can't wait for Tuesday. I'm hunting Steuben County in the far west side of the state. Great hunting and some amazing bucks!
This Just in, that loosed arrow resulted in a dead deer.

Good luck fellas!!!! And to a few fellas good job getting us started with some loose arrow. Joe
Congratulations Steve. Way to start the season.
I am tickled that one of my work projects will be completed this week and the next one is in November, giving me a gap in the work to get into the woods.
the wind really screwed me today, my own fault thought if it was only a light breeze i didn't have to move, YEAH RIGHT. deer blew at me from all angles! so close yet so far away!
look what was walking through where i sat today, this video was from yesterday.

Thats a great video Ken thanks for sharing!!
Very cool Ken. I have a couple pics to email you so you can post them if you don't mind. Shot one this am @ 9:58. Smallest deer I have ever taken but 1st one with the Longbow. 16 yards and watched her for a while. She was definitely on her own. She had a bullet hole through her side the size of a 22. Glad I decided to take her before she had issues from it.
Good luck Yorkers,we can get after them this coming sat in Vt.
Congrats Steve and Daniel
Thanks RonP and good luck all.
I did my last pre-season walk this morning and all looks good. Jumped three (saw no antlers) but the travel sign is good. Early yet for rubs or scrapes.
Just give me one good frost before Saturday to kill the mosquitoes!
hey Ron,
enjoy those woodsy mountains!
Good luck and hunt safe

Congrats on a bog ol nanny Steve.
Congrats Steve. I CAN'T STAND THE WAIT!!! Tuesday morning can't get here fast enough, forecast shows a west wind so I'm headed for the apple stand. About 13' high with good cover from a lot of vines and briars and shots in the 12-16yd range.
Nice Steve......
Congrats Steve :clapper:

:wavey:
went out in the P.M. and saw 3 mom doe's with a total of 6 fawns. I let them walk. What a great afternoon with the temps in the low 70's, bright sunshine, the fall leaves are great looking and just the smell of fall. It just makes for a great day in the woods.
Three of us got out early yesterday morning. Saw a lot of doe and turkeys. No shots taken but a great morning in the woods and fields.
I'm sitting hear debating if I should go this afternoon with temps in the mid 80s. I have a pretty long walk up a gradient hill. Good Luck all!!
I'm thinking of going out this afternoon, too. Temps about 70 degrees with a westerly wind.
I was able to get my first traditional deer yesterday. Shared the story here - http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=132109
A couple thoughts here. First, he didn't have that "I'm in rut" smell so it is definitely early for us in Western NY. No real signs of activity in that sense. Additionally, I saw 3 bucks hanging out together so no competition yet. I thought with the run of the colder weather for a while it would have been a bit more active. Definitely not though.
Hope you all have a great season as well.
I shot a nice doe last night and my son Adam shot two today making his first and second deer with a recurve .
Drew, way to start the season off. Congrats to you and your son.
Looks like Adam's starting to take after his Dad!!!!!
Congatulations to both of you, Brother!!!!! :clapper:
Congrats Drew and Adam! Good shootin' :jumper:
way to go bro and A Bomb!!!!!!
Way to go,Drew! You must me one proud pop.

That's great. Congratulations. Watching the next generation get a deer is even better then getting them ourselves. Especially when they start to gut them too. :)
Drew and Adam :notworthy: :notworthy:
Congrats Brothers.
Congrats Drew and son, nice job! Went up north for early bow this past weekend. I didn't get a shot with my Slammer, but my son shot a nice doe with his cheater bow. He says he will use his K-Mag down here, we'll see.
Work is crazy so I don't know when I will get out, but it sure is awesome out in the woods right now!
Nice hunting fellas, a good strong start to the season.Im having some action with the ladies but no buck so far.
Congratulations Drew and Adam :bigsmyl:

Oh wait that looks like the Bob Lee not the new grizzly.
I'm taking the lil man out for his first time bowhunting with me. I don't know who is more excited.
I have a pop up set up in a real nice funnel. Acorns are dropping like it is cool. Only issue might be the heat...
Congrats to those of you that have been successful. :)

Jim ,now it's time to give that very special Osage longbow a chance at a hero photo! Took my son and daughter out tonight saw one doe but she got nervous at the sight of the blind.
Dans doe, nice one bro!!!!!!!!

Nice deer Dan. The bucks have been shy this year with me, pre season and my few hunts but I finally discovered a couple of them hiding out.
Thanks for posting the pic Ken. She is small but was alone. I wares a while but just could not resist filling last years tag! 2 bears, a Turkey & finally brought home a deer. 16 yard shot & she went about 50 yards with no blood to track. Double lung passthrough. She bled all internally. Anyway good luck to everyone & Congrats to all who have drawn blood. I consider myself blessed.
Congratulations Dan
Congrats guys the does are droppping!!!
Working in the pinebush this morning charlie and seeing a lot of deer on their hooves. Keep your eyes open and no texting.

Way to go Dan. Now fill this years.
Thanks Kat & guys. Just home from work. Will get going on this years tags tomorrow. Good luck to all. Be safe and shoot straight!
Nice job Dan , congrats
will be hunting all afternoon till dark tomorrow.
Only two sits so far. Passed up 5 does and a small buck. Probably going to have to let the string go one day next week.
Congrats all!! Went out this morning for a few hours. Saw 2 does, 2 fawns, got busted when the wind changed direction. They were about 45 yards when they busted me. I'll be back out this afternoon
heading up now, light rain but will give it a shot!
Got rained out bad this morning but going back at it this afternoon.
Two sits over apples, A nice 8 point saved by a fickle wind, one doe that I couldn't stop in a shooting lane, and a decent seven point at 18 yds spooked by the weirdest bird noise I've ever heard. Funny but three deer in range and no shots taken saw a few more deer cutting through the woods.
had a small buck under the stand for a good 15-20 minutes. gave me a few really good shot opportunities, but I let him go so he could grow, now if it'd been a doe instead, I'd be eating tenderloin right now.
wow just got DRENCHED, came out of the woods and it promptly stops!!!!!!
Man, bro, the rain keeps following you. Didn't you get wet enough in Colorado LOL?
Congrats to all my fellow NY bowhunters that have been successful already!!!
Especially Adam!!! I so happy to hear he's back to shooting a trad bow!!!!
When he came to the bunny hunt several years ago and put on the shooting display on the rolling discs I knew I was in the company of one of the, if not the.....most gifted young trad archers I've ever seen shoot.....it was fun to watch!!!
Congrats Adam...how about some pix??
I'm headed out this afternoon for only the second deer hunt of the young season....
Thanks Curt , I'll have to send pic from my phone to computer and see if I can post.
Good luck to you and Cade
Congrats Dan.
Izzy, I sat a spot in the pine bush where you directed me and I scouted 2 years ago, a scheduled controlled burn had all the spots I normally sit closed.
I saw a woodcock and had a great sit with the other young critters. The bottom let out as soon as I hit the car to pick up my wife.
Thats a cool spot Charlie. Never hunted it but have ridden my patrol mt. bike in there and saw deer and turkey. Havent seen a car in there the few times I drove through there this year.
It was a beautiful morning. I'm trying to get "reacquainted" with a set of woods that I hunt. Hurricane sandy did a number on it. Huge oak blow downs are all over. Didn't see deer this morning. But it was really enjoying the sit. I'll be at it again tomorrow after noon.
I heard a deer fell over by Kinderhook today!
:readit: Congrats Terry!
Congrats Shawn.
Good Luck tomnorrow Sean B.
Saw a beautiful 3 1/2 year old 8. Passed me at 40 yards. Made 3 scrapes along the ridge he was traveling. It was cool to watch but Id have rather watched him running with his tail tucked tight and crashing into trees.
A bunch of new rubs popping up too.
Headed for Louisiana maybe a pig maybe a deer...I won't be able to get out a lot, but, the bows coming and I'll sneak a few sits in
Yep, 3rd sit was a good one. Just couldn't pass up the big mature doe at 5 yards. I thought I had hit a little far back and watched her walk 40 yards and bed down. I waited about an hour and then she got up and walked into some brush. I was thinking gut shot and backed out until 2 PM. I went home and got my son Tyler and went back. She didn't go 5 yards from where she walked into the brush. I think she walked in and fell over dead. I must've only got one lung due to the steep angle. Anyway, great deer for the freezer and it was really nice having my son with. He has been in Brazil for two years and it's nice to have my hunting buddy home (at least till he leaves for college).

Brazil??? Cool. What did he hunt down there, jaguars?
Good job Terry!! I'm on my 3rd sit at this moment....I hope 3rd times the charm all way around!!
Right now I'm sittin' at my desk... :( ... The only thing I can kill from here is time!
... mike ... :dunno: ...
Congrats Terry
Nice shooting Terry Congratulations.
A big Congrats.
Congratulations Terry. Beautiful deer.
Anybody??? Thought some deer would get hunt today. I was forced to work today (by myself) but man I wish I was out there, things are heating up!
work has ruined many a good hunter Izzy.
Tyler and I went fishing today instead. Caught a bunch of smallmouth and largemouth. We even caught a couple big walleye...they were really good for dinner. Tyler even caught a pike too. A good day with my boy!
Indianabowman, congrats on the nice Doe and reunion with your son. Congrats to all you guys that have been blessed with a kill. Iv' only been out hunting for a few hours altogether. Looking forward to this weekend.
I was out this morning. Tony Z and I had trails 1 & 2 covered. Deer were on trail #3!!
I haven't been out at all. My Mom just got out of surgery about an hour ago - triple by-pass and a valve replacement. Kind of stressed us right out! I hope to get out Sunday morning for a few hours locally and enjoy the woods.
Congrats to those that have put a deer down already. I've only been out twice since the 1st and have yet to see any deer. Hope to be out Saturday morning in westchester.
I made my hunting story to share today... I can't even post a teaser picture from camp.
:bigsmyl:
Ron,
Sorry to hear about your Mom.
Hope she is doing well now!
If there is anything I can do let me know!
I will be out of town Saturday and coming back late Sunday afternoon.
Been through it a couple of times with my Dad.
I won't be going out again until Monday
Ron P prayers sent. hope she recovers quickly. not get some medicine for yourself like the WOODS!
Thanks guys. She is doing pretty well and is awake and off the ventilator. So I will get out in the woods a little this week-end. The weather looks great for the next few days. Maybe a little too warm, but it will be great weather to be in the woods!
Should be a ton of forced movement this weekend with the any weapons youth weekend. Wear orange.
thats the great thing about the mountain Izzy, will be nobody but me and my crew!
Not much time to hunt this year with my new job and getting things ready around the house for winter. I scouted back on the state land in a remote area a mile behind the house yesterday. The area has several white oaks that are the prime focus of the local Deer this year. Tough spot to hunt due to it's location and the topography of the land and the constant southerly winds so far this season. My side of the hill is where I need to be due to time restraints. Going this morning to set up a tree stand in a pinch point that should see some action once the bucks start cruising more. Also going to hunt an area near where I work in Elmira. I'll be able to hunt the spot for a couple of hours after work. There will be little scouting and hunting from the ground only. Iv' been told there are some decent Bucks there.........we;ll see.........hopefully. Off to the woods I go, good luck everyone.
Went out this morning, had a lone doe come in at 730. She came in straight at me, then broke off to my right. I had a good broadside shot at her as she stopped with her vials framed out be tow tree trunks. I had a hard time focusing on a spot, kept worry about hitting the trees, so I didn't shoot. she was on a steady walk, I turned for a shot to my fight, but it was so still, I was afraid to move my feet so the noise wouldn't give me away. I wasn't comfortable with the shot, so again, I didn't shoot. She was about 20 yards at that point. That was it for the day.
I was blessed this morning, had a 20 yard shot at this nice doe. My Bob Lee 54" 47# @28" old Bear razor head on a GT3555 Blem :readit:
Nice shot!
Looks like your having a good season thus far Jim. Nice Doe, congrats
Went out this morning to sit a ground blind and then set up a tree stand in a pinch point. One of my local Does came by. I haven't shot any of the Does on my land in 5 or 6 years. Their numbers are down and their what draw the bucks in for me, so I don't shoot them. There is a young Buck hanging out where one hangs out every year. He has several scraps and I noticed a new rub this morning. I may have to see if I can get him if other plans don't work out. Trying to hold off for the mature Bucks that should start coming around in a week or two. I first want to check out that spot near where I work. If it looks good, I would be able to hunt it after work during the week. No time to hunt my land after work as it takes too much time to get up there from the house.Going to be a tough year getting time to hunt, but that's life! :banghead:
Ron, I pray a speedy and complete recovery for your mother. Hope you were able to get out and do some hunting this weekend.Best of luck to you my friend.
Thank you Dave. I appreciate it. My mom looked really good this morning and is getting out of intensive care as soon as a bed is available. I did get out and sat in a hemlock tree for a couple hours this morning as the sun came up. Great morning. No deer around, but it sure beats sitting in a stuffy waiting room!
Congrats AGAIN Joe! Nice shooting!
Wow Jim,great job so far this year 2 for 2 nice shooting. Save some for us. :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
I was fortunate enough to kill this buck on Saturday morning. It ends a three year drought on whitetails for me.I killed some hogs and small game, but no deer. The curse is over. I used my new Hill Style longbow that I built this August.

Good Luck Brothers!

wind shift two steps before she was in the open...grrr
Nice fellas. Congrats on the grandson too bud.
So it's the hat,Jim? Maybe I should start wearing mine, nothing else is working.
I've had several does and fawns in close but the does won't give me a good shot angle. The other night I had 4 small bucks right under the stand, the only legal one was a 5 pt. but I'm holding out for something a litte bigger.I'd sure like to take one of dem dare does, though.Gotta wear that hat! :D
Thanks Izzy.
Nice Glen!!!
Congrats Jim.
Glen, I was happy to see your picture. Congrats again.
I had some close encounters with a 4 point and a 5 point this weekend but couldnt get a shot off. they were all on the wrong side. Thats the problem with going inb blind on property you dont know.
Still a great weekend!
Congrats Jim and Glen!!
Nice shooting Jim and Glen. Congrats.
congrats Glen!
It's alittle late, But Tyler & I, had a couple visitors over the weekend!!!!!
Charlie & Nathan came down for our Hudson Valley Rendezvous!!!
We had about 6 TradGang brothers last year & tried to get about the same crew together this year. However, due to lifes confilicting commitments... Most were unable to make it. We missed you all, My Brothers! You were the toppic of many a conversation!!!!!
Charlie & Nathan arrived Friday night around 9pm. We spent HOURS catching up,eating snacks & drinking too much beer!!! (THAT was Charlie's fault!) Plans were made to hunt the Fishkill Cemetary property that we have permission to hunt saturday morning.
Saturday morning, I was up at 5am & cooking breakfast. Scrambled eggs,Sausage Gravy & Biscuits. Bellys were rumbling,LOL!!! Apparently, all of the beer from the night before, was taking is toll..... After a while, things settled down. I assured the boys that a "late start" wouldn't be a problem! (Due to my crazy work schedule, I'm mostly a "mid-day" hunter. Rarely in the woods before 8-9am & seldom later than 3pm. I usualy ALWAYS see deer) We got down to the Cemetary about 8am. There was a flock of turkeys on one of the sections next to the woods & we passed them driveing in. We headed into the woods and I gave Charlie & Nathan directions down to my ladder stand. Nathan would sit in the stand & Charlie aliitle farther up along the swamp, on the ground in his Guille Suit. Tyler and I headed down to the "Stone Circle" blind, where he almost shot a Spikehorn last season.
About 9am, Thing started happening!!!!! Tyler saw a deer picking his way acrossed the hillside in front of us. It was totaly unaware of our presence, and in no hurry at all. It zig-zagged acrossed the hillside, then down the hill past our blind about 20-25 yards away.It was a small Forkhorned Buck, but boy was he FAT!!! Tyler never even put tension on the string, even though I'm sure he could have made the shot! He told me later, he thought it was too far. Good call on his part!!! he little buck picked his way down around our blind, then back up again, then back down around & headed off toward the Cemetaty..... All told, he probly hung around for about 45 minutes!
While we were first seeing him, another encounter was taking place on the other side of the hill, down by the swamp. Charlie & Nathan had a nice little 5 pointer wandering back & forth between the 2 of them. At one point he gave Nathan a beautiful 20yrd shot which he passed on, and came within 15yds of Charlie, only behind him... He just couldn't get turned around for a shot without spooking him!!!
Around 10:30, I told Tyler there was movement below us... The flock of turkeys we'd seen earlier was making it's way up through the woods. I'd forgotten my mouth call, so we just watched them as they made thier S-L-O-W progress up the hill..... I picked a spot on the forest floor, where I had shot & killed a turkey several years ago. It's a long shot, but "do-able"... I told Tyler if a turkey got into that sunlit spot, to put the tip of his Razorhead on the bird & let'er fly! Well, yler got alittle "impatient" and stepped up out of the blind onto a rock, to get a better shot..... AND THEY SPOOKED!!!!! They all started running & Tyler thought it was SO FUNNY that they all got it a line & followed each other!!! "IT WAS LIKE A CONGA LINE!" He said... We laughed for a long time about that, LMAO!!! About noon, Charlie & Nathan headed down to the "Stone Circle" and it was time to head home for Lunch.....
Excellent story Chuck
Our designated "camp chef" Nathan, made us a delicious lunch of marinated venison sandwiches. (and a few more beers) We took a much needed nap!!! Then, it was back down to the Cemetary for our evening hunt...
Chalie & Nathan again headed down to the swamp, while Tyler and I headed to the Stone Circle. When Tyler & I got down there, it was apparent the our flock of turkeys wasn't spooked too bad... The forest floor looked like someone ran through it with a Roto-tiller LOL!!! Charlie again played tag with the small 5 pointer again, without an oppertunity for a shot. It was a nice evening sit, all around!!!!!
Nathan made a delicious Venison Chille, and we had Chille dogs, Chips&Dip, and yes... More beer!!! LMAO! We made Plans to hunt Stewart State Forest sunday morning. It has designated parking areas and we had to be there EARLY!!!!! It was a realativly "early" night...(about 11pm!) and seemed we had no sooner hit the sack, when the alarm was ringing a 3am!!! We drove over to Stewart, and found ourselves 2 parking spots. Then, it was a chance to catch up on alittle sleep.....
I awoke & it was just starting to break day... I textd Charlie asking if they were in the woods, figureing that Tyler & I overslept..... No answer. I txtd him again & got a response, "we're getting ready now"... Apparently, The boys are getting the hang of this "late start" hunting technique I have been using for years, LOL!
We headed into the woods, and Tyler & I set up along 2 stone walls that intersected in a patch of oak trees, bordering a huge swamp. It was a beautiful spot with lots of sign... However, we did not see any deer. Just a few squirrels & a bunch of "sauceabirds" LOL. Tyler commented to me, that the view of the swamp & the woods & mountains behind it was BEAUTIFUL in the early morning sunlight!!!!! I think he's starting to learn, there's more to hunting, than killing deer!
We met up with Charlie & Nathan about noon, and it was time for them to hit the road. Tyler & I had a wonderful time!!!!! These men, my very dear friends, and Brothers in my heart, have taken my son under thier wing, and treat him as thier own!!!!! I am very blessed to have such wonderful friends in our life!!!!!
Thank You, My Brothers!!!!! My door is always open.....
I got to dirty up some of my arrows this weekend. It was a warm one on Sat and it put me to sleep. I woke up to a deer standing 15 yards out munching on some acorns. I didn't even have an arrow on my bow. I stood u got my bow and knocked an arrow turned and saw the deer standing at 8 yards. I took the shot he ran 20 yards and doubled over. The Simmons did its job. Those broadheads are lethal.

I had a great time and almost had a shot at that dumb 5 point who outsmarted me. what does that make me  :knothead: I learned from it though and hopefully the next dumb deer gets an arrow through its chest.
Chuck, Thank you for the Hospitality. I'm telling ya, get Tyler under those white oaks where I saw the 5'er in the afternoon.
Matt Congrats on the Doe! I knew those arrows were too pretty foir their own good. Great Job on bloodying them up. :clapper:
Good shooting Jim, Glen and Matt.
And best wishes for Ma, Ron.
Nice one Matt :archer:
Good shooting Matt, but that doesn't look like your new Striker bow??? :jumper:
Congratulations to all that are connecting! I am still waiting to see my first Deer..... lots of Deer flys and hornets, however!
Nice one Matt.

Then I work 3 days and have 10 off in a row :p
Adam finished off a wounded buck this afternoon , it gave him a good run getting it but he made good on it. Meat was still good and deer was put to rest in the freezer
On 10/01 I moved my game camera off the hill and placed it literally a stones throw from my back door just to see what might be moving near the house (we raise sheep, chickens and turkey). I have not seen a deer yet on he hill - but this little half fork came by at 7:00PM last Friday (I never reset for DST) about 60 yards from my back door.

Must be genetic. This was last year's deer.

Congrats Adam, Your a killing machine dude.
Drew, you better chain that kid up or you'll be buying another freezer :readit: ;)
Glad to see all the hero pics & congrats to all. Didn't get out this week. Had to take my dog to the vets & just couldn't stop worrying about my baby. Good luck to all.
Nice job Charlie and Adam
Adam says he is done for the bow season , saving his last tags for the other season
There's another season!!??? :dunno:
Yeah, Late season :readit:
HA!! Gotcha Charlie, good thinkin!!
Had a great morning and not so great.Had 2 bucks come down the trail that was by my groundblind.Should have let the first one go by but got to excited and flubbed up the shot. Both were spike horns. What a rush though.............
Opening day of muzzleloader season here in my neck of the woods.
I went from being the only one around to everyone and their brother in the same 1/4 mile area....
Shots going off left and right
Counted six shots before 7:30
After that it got ridiculous
I walked out at 9 am and was a little nervous doing so even though I was wearing my blaze orange
Went out this morning... Cleaned all the new growth out of the Stone Circle. Saw 1 deer when I first got there, but all I saw was it's tail going over the hill, Lmao!!! I set there untill noon.....
My friend Dean txtd me that he had left around 10:30, So I decided to sneak around & do alittle scouting. I found an opening in the stone wall with a big White Oak a few yards away... In about a 1/2 hour, I had layed up a few stones & had a comfortable seat!!! I sat for about an hour and needed to get up & stretch..... That was when I saw a deer's head pop up!!! (Uhhh, What was that?) The wind was right in my face and it couldn't wind me, but it sure did see me MOVE!!!!! I froze, and he whatched... (it was the small 4 pointer Tyler & I saw last weekend) Finally, he made up his mind & moved off... Then he came back!!!!! The wind was still blowing toward me and he just couldn't get my scent..... But, he was DANG SURE, he had seen SOMETHING!!!!! We played "hide & peek" for about a 1/2 hour, and then he trotted off. Never giving me a shot...
That's OK, I've still got lots of vacation time left!!!!! :bigsmyl:
I was lucky enough to shoot this buck last weekend while hunting with my good friend Mike Manassa. Second deer from the same stand this year.
I used my trusty 45# Rick Welch Dakota Hunter recurve and Sitka Spruce Arrows.

Good job, Rick!

Excellent
very nice Rick , congrats
Nice deer Rick . Congratulations
Killed a big doe Fri AM at my buddies hunting cabin, my shot was too far back so we let her lay until 3:00.With much prayers we were able to find her quickly she only went 100 yards,it was a good lesson for me on how to handle a poorly hit deer .I shot her with my homemade hybrid longbow I call "Hulk" at #55 and GT blems with Simmons Safaris up front.
Congrats Rick! Congrats Gerald.
I had a doe at 10 yards this morning. Couldnt get a shot. She was behind a wall of brush and then tried to come through it straight at me. she was up hill from me and about eye level from me in my tree stand. she saw me and took 4 steps backward behind the thick brush and back out to the feild. 5 minutes later she came back looking for me to see if she really seen something that wasnt supposed to be there.
Getting ready to go out this morning. I haven.t gotten in a tree stand yet this year. Fri. evening I hunted my new found location near where I work. I made a quick ground blind in the goldenrod field I was hunting. Had a yearling Doe come within 10 yds. The only shot I had was at her head. She looked small, so I didn't shoot. The area has good deer numbers, but also other hunters. Still hoping for a nice Doe.............. or Buck! Hunting a spot on the state land down the road from me this morning. I haven't hunted it in a couple years. We'll see what happens. Waiting for the bucks to start tending.
Congrats fellas. This week should be awesome.
Great job of tracking Gerald congratulations.
Thanks for your prayers Jim,go get em David
Thanks guys, good luck to everyone, still a lot of season left.
Rick
congrats Gerald
Way to go Gerald, glad you got one. I came real close to dropping the string on a Doe today. I just couldn't get a clear shot at her. Iv' seen 9 Doe in the last two hunts. I'm starting to smell venison!
Big congrats Gerald,Hope you get another one.
Way to go Rick, nice shooting.....congrats on the buck.
Congrats Rick
I am going to try and get out as much as I can this week.the temps are dropping and the deer should be moving a little more, good luck to all NY stickmen.
I just checked my camera and there's alot more daytime photos being taken. Good luck to everyone who can get out. It doesn't look like I'll be getting out again until 28th.
Looks like I'll get out in the AM......1st time here at home. I'll be on the ground with my River Runner looking for anything that offers a good clean shot.
Good Luck Ron. Maybe you will have a 5 Yarder again?
Good Luck, Ron!!!!!
Heading out in the morning myself, I've got a freezer to fill!!!
(and a HUNGRY Boy,who LOVES venison)
Was out today in Rockland Co...nothing moving but squirrels...will try again on Friday...good luck fellas!
Got some added motivation yesterday - saw an 8 point (possibly 10) at 6:00PM about 80 yards away that didn't come my way. I tried two soft bleat calls but sunset came and the buck never did.
Good indication that a nice buck is passing at the right time - I just hope we meet before gun season and someone else tags him. In the last three weeks the scrape neat my stand has been visited - but not when I am there unfortunately.
Fickle wind this AM. Had a deer blow 5 or 6 times just before shooting time, wind was in my face but something set it off. Started to rain a bit. Wind changed and I backed out.
Had a great hunt this morning, minus the deer I sought. Got in very early with plenty of time before the woods lit up. Bumped some deer near my stand. :knothead:
Id been sitting in the stand for 20 minutes when at 07:00 I heard what surely must have been a murder of some poor critter. Then all was quiet for about 5 minutes when I heard something running toward me from the red pines. Thought it was maybe a fox but it turned out to be 2 fisher cats. The bigger one was chasing another big one although smaller than him. He caught him a couple times in the 100 yards I watched them til they disappeared screeching and rolling the whole way.
At about 09:00 I saw a flock of turkeys and nearly had a chance to bring one home but got busted shifting into position. A good, meatless day. :campfire:
I am officially Calling Woodchucker.
How much wood can woodchucker Chuck, if a woodchucker could chuck an Autumn orange out of a Bear Grizzly? At least thats the way I think it went :coffee:
Hey Charlie, I was waiting for the Woodchucker to come out and look for his shadow!!! Its Groundhog day!!! Come on 'Chucker..... :campfire: :coffee:
Hello, Brothers!!!!!
Downed a nice fat 3 point Buck this morning, down on the Fishkill Cemetary property!!!!!
Using my old 1972 Bear Grizzly, shooting an Autumn Orange 2016 tipped with an old Green Bear Razorhead...
The shot looked low,and I actualy thought I missed!!!!! I put it right through his left leg, through his chest putting a big slice in his heart and cutting the right leg coming out. He left a blood trail a blind man could follow, but he ran a heck of a long way... About 200yds!!!!!
I posted the story over on the N.Y. Trad Bowhunters forum... Check out the "Whatcha see today?" thread!!!!!
Saw 4 doe tonight and 2 were in to about 10 yards but they caught my scent ,I do love ground hunting.
Good for you Chuck........

Ok, details on my buck. But first, a big congrats to Chuck on getting his buck. I have been hunting in South Port, a little town outside Elmira. The Does around my house were I usually hunt have been down in numbers for a few years now. Therefore, for the early part of the season I have been hunting elsewhere in hopes of arrowing a nice fat Doe. My plan was to hunt Doe the first of the season and then hunt the bucks once they started seeking Does during the day. So anyway, Wednesday morning I see two bucks 1/4 mile down the road from my house. This pattern usually occurs every year, and tells me it's time to start hunting bucks. One buck was a four point and the other I couldn't count the horns on, but his rack was in the ball park of 16 to 18 in. in spread. Now when I see a buck like that around I get excited. Every year I have plans and visions of tagging a nice buck, but in reality they are few and far in between- at least in my neck of the woods. Most years I have enough time to scout and locate a decent buck to hunt, but not this year. With a new job, and no vacation time, I'm restricted to evenings and weekends minus foul weather. After seeing those bucks Wednesday it was time to start hunting my land. After work Wed. I rushed home, took my shower and prepared my hunting clothes and gear and headed up the hill. A 100 yrd wide growth of hemlocks growing on a more gentle slop between open hardwoods on both sides, makes a great recipe for buck travel. It's here, I have a permanent tree stand. I;m not sure how many deer Iv' shot from this stand, but it's a few, plus a few misses. Up I went in hopes of seeing a buck.
Ten minutes after I settled in the stand, I spot a deer coming down the hill in brisk steps with nose to the ground. I know it's a buck, but he's 70 yrds. away and he's heading down the hill staying 70 yrds from the stand. I grunted a few soft grunts with my voice and figured he just keep going down the hill. Suddenly behind the stand I heard footsteps, but couldn't be sure if it was the buck or the squirrel I just saw head that way, but I waited in anticipation. I heard nothing else for another five or ten minutes. Again I heard something behind the stand, but figured it was the squirrel again and kept my eyes looking up the hill for more arrivals. Once more I heard something behind and down wind of my location.I went to turn around to take a peak, when off to my right stood a spike horn just looking around. He was only about twelve yrds away as he turned and looked in the pine trees with his face turned a 180 degrees from my position. I seized the moment, and stood with My Cheetah ready.
Be back in a bit guys, I gotta do a couple things before it gets dark.
Congratulations!!!!!
OK David, Now your Talking! Looking forward to the rest!
Nice Job Chuck!
Great day Izzy! I have never seen a fisher yet myself, but the sightings are getting more frequent here. It's just a matter of time.
Work has been crazy so I have not been out since our season started. Now that it's cooling down and things should start to happen I've got to change that.
Congrats all. Catskill Longbow, been seeing them every now and then in Andes. My mom and dad live there.
I no sooner got ready to shoot and the buck turned broadside and immediately started walking up the hill away from me. This was the same exact location I shot a buck from this stand with my self bow five years ago, and he was now behind the same little pine tree I shot threw to get that buck. As he stood there for a second I drew down and shot. This time the arrow found a branch, and either went under the deer or over but when I retrieved the arrow latter, it was laying on top of the ground only two yrds past where the buck had been standing. Usually that means the arrow bounced off the deers belly, but at any rate, the buck jumped ahead a few yrds and was now standing broadside again with his head behind a tree. I reached back quickly and grabbed the second arrow I had resting across two limbs. I got positioned for the second shot, just as the buck walked forward in front of my stand. I paused for a second wanting him to stop. The clear spot in front of the stand is blocked partially by a small tree and he would be behind it in two more steps- I had to get on him quick or not at all. With the deer now blocking his shoulder area behind the tree, I pulled back and stared at the area four inches behind his front leg. In a flash the arrow was in flight as I watched it bury to the end of the fletch. The shot looked good, yet doubt entered my mind. The buck ran straight ahead along the side of the hill and out of sight.Hearing no crash or thrash, I waited half an hour and then slipped down the tree and quietly inspected the area 18 yrds in front of the stand. No blood or arrow at the shot sight, so I walked over and picked up my other arrow and headed home down the hill.
I gave it an hour before returning to hopefully find the young buck. I took a drag rope and flashlight. The bow would do me no good if the buck where alive. I was however fairly confident I would find him motionless. I picked up the blood trail ten yrds past the shot sight, and found the four shaft of my arrow just past that. I found a little lung matter on the shaft, but mostly dark red blood. The blood on the ground was dark with no indication of a lung hit, yet the yellowish splotch on the arrow was telling me I at least hit a part of one lung. The blood trail never got heavy, but the coagulated red blood said liver the further I went. This deer was dead- I was confident of a good hit. Know all I had to do was find the deer!
I trailed the deer for another forty yrds and found him dead indeed. He hadn't gone more than 70 or 80 yrds before expiring. I knelled down and thanked the buck for his life and the good lord for bringing him to me. It was Fall in all it's glory. A special tree, a special land, a special time, a worthy quarry, and very special feeling.
Very nice David
Didn't get any herro pics last night, but as soon as Janet gets home I'll have her take a pic or two of the buck.
I used my new 65" Cheetah with cedar shafts and Zwickey Eskimo heads
Congrats David. Well Told!
Thanks Jim- and for that memorable day on the water! Glad to see your having a great season.
CONGRATULATIONS, David!!!!!!!!!!

Iv' shot everything over the years from 3 pointers to 11 pointers, but this is my first spike. I get just as excited about harvesting any Whitetail. What a fantastic animal to hunt.
Well done.......
Thanks Charlie, and Chuck and Ron, This thread has really been enjoyable this year with everyone sharing their hunts and the NY brotherhood of the bow. Very cool! God bless
Nice one David... good shooting!
:bigsmyl:
A big congrats to you David, nice shot ,story and recovery.Looks like the rabbit men are doing fairly well this year.Good luck to all my fellow NY stickmen
Great stories & nice pics boys. Congrats. Have not been out. My dog who owned my soul died suddenly Monday night. Literally dropped dead from a heart attack. She was young & had taken her to the vets several times the last month & a half. She will lead me to a deer as soon as I feel like getting back out there. Good luck everyone.
Congratulations David, nice deer. I enjoyed the story.
Glen
Way to go David......Great for the Grill.......
Congrats on the deer!
Sorry to hear about the pup. Just remember now he will be with you on all your adventures afield.
Sorry about the pup--they seem to have a stranglehold on our hearts. My 7-year old lab blew out her achilles tendon so no birdhunting for her this year. Breaks my heart to leave her home.... I have a sign on my garage that says
"Heaven is the place where all the dogs you ever loved come to greet you".
Keep that in mind.
just an awesome story bro thanks for taking us along!
My condolences Crotch horn, May the good Lord lift your heart.
Great job David, gotta love a trad buck!
Sean B- I actually thought I saw a fisher around Dingle Hill in Andes. Turned around and went back but whatever it was was gone. Bummer!
I see you guys talking about Fisher. I have them around here. Iv; seen two and one dead along the road. My brother watched one come down a tree from 15 yds away while sitting near my TeePee. We are starting to get some Bobcats around as well. Steuben county, thought you may like to know.
I have heard that the Fisher are putting a dent in the turkey population. I heard they take them right off the roost. Don't know if it's a fact. I have seen them for years hunting up north now is seems they are every where. Going to do a mid day still hunt/scout tomorrow, just to see what I can see.
Good job David. Congrats. :clapper:
The deer are active this morning round here, too bad I have to watch from my car.
Drive some to me Izzy. I haven't seen anything on stand yet this morning. Even the chipmunks slept in
Thank everyone, back to hunting for a Doe from the ground for me. I wish you all the best with your season and God bless. Knawbone
Took a walk/scout on the state land near me at mid day. Was out for about 2 1/2 hours and was surprised to see some good sign. 2 good scrapes that were fairly fresh. That's pretty good since the deer aren't really bumping into each other around here...lol! The wind was nuts...... swirling, changing direction, just hard to play. When I left I took a ride around the area......not one other vehicle.
Unable to bow hunt this year, have to have shoulder surgery in about 6 weeks so Jim (stone knife) took pity on me and took me duck hunting. While we were working our way around the back of one of the ponds a real nice 8pt. probably at least a 2 1/2 year old just stood in front of us at 40 yards what a sight. Cant wait till I can finally shoot again, this is only the second bow season I've ever missed.
Wishing you a speedy recovery Alex. Stone knife is a first rate guy. I'm glad he got you out duck hunting.
Thanks David, Jim is a great guy. This is going to be the second surgery in 8 years on the same shoulder, I guess to many years of shooting a heavy bow and working heavy construction are catching up on me. I think it might be slowly sinking in that I'm not 20 anymore, guess I'm a slow learner.

What do you mean? I feel like 20 still :knothead:
Raining here this morning, 50% chance of rain today and all this next week. All the moisture makes for some tough hunting, and besides, I hate hunting in the rain. If I hadn't already filled my buck tag I could be hunting for a mature buck. The thing is, this often happens every fall. Come rut time the weather go's sour. Hopefully the last week of October and the first week of November will see good weather for all my NY trad brothers. Personally, I hate hunting in the rain, maybe I can get out this evening and hunt for that fat Doe I'm looking for. If I do, I'll be a mile down on the state land with a long drag up hill. Always a possibility of seeing a black bear too. Go get em guys! Did I mention I hate hunting in the rain?
Went to church this morning but will be out in the afternoon to give it another whirl.
same here Jim, oh and you're not 20 anymore :biglaugh:
Congrats to everyone who has taken a deer so far. Haven't been out much yet as my moose hunt took a big chunk of the season so far but got out yesterday and today. Had two nice eight pointers chasing the does all around today but never came quite close enough.
Alex hope you have a quick recovery.
Crotch Horn sorry for your loss, been there and know the pain . Some time in the woods is good for the soul.
Got out about 3;30 this afternoon. Still hunted a section of state land I haven;t hunted since last year. Kicked up two deer I believed to be bucks by where they were and where they were headed. Then shortly before reaching my vehicle, two young deer stepped out in a firebreak. I was perched along the edge behind a blow down when they appeared. One of the deer worked it's way to within 25 yrds of me. I had a broadside shot but didn't drop the string as it was a little to dark and the deer looked just a tad on the small side. That's the second opportunity Iv' had from the ground this year. I'm having a good year despite not having a lot of time to hunt. Man I love my deer hunting. Wind was blowing right to those last two deer and they never smelled me. I'm consistently getting close to deer on the ground.......I love it!
Thanks Bob I just want to get this over with, its been steadily getting worse for two years I tried the usual roots physical therapy and cortisone injections with only minor relief. Told the doctor Id be happy shooting a high 40 to low 50 lbs bow I cant even shoot my wife's 37 lbs bow right now.
Alex sorry about your shoulder, I was wondering why you had not put one on the ground yet. I met a one armed guy at the Hawkeye bowshoot who would sit on the ground and pull his bow with his only arm and shoot, and I am telling you he was DEADLY! I think I would do that if I had too.
Gerald I'll have to keep that in mind for next year, I'll have to design and build a bow with a boot stirrup. I actually hit and lost a 6pt in the beginning of the season and that lead to the decision to lay off for the rest of the season. The pain that occurs upon the release was effecting my accuracy but I was in denial up until that point, I came to the point that I shouldn't be hunting and made a appointment with the surgeon. Hopefully the 6pt and I will recover completely and we will have a chance meeting in the future. Even if I cant hunt I hope to bring the dogs out for our second annual rabbit hunt.
Had two does feeding right up to me last night, then two buck started to fight making the does nervous. No shots but it was a blast. I'll be out today :bigsmyl: deer are moving good now.
Cooler weather seems to be getting things fired up.I missed a big doe(shot low) while hunting on the ground Saturday. Friday I watched a nice 8pt work a scrape and then walk under me at 5yds.Guess I shouldn't have shot a small 6pt 2nd week and used up my buck tag. Every day new scrapes are showing up in our small woods and I've seen three different bucks. I've been seeing a few turkeys too but haven't had a shot except when a couple went to roost by me and I didn't want to shoot a $16 carbon/broadhead into space.
8pt...
Full story is on the post titled Canadice curse..good luck to all...!!
just got permission to hunt an AWESOME piece of land by my house, scouted and hung a stand today. 10 scrapes and a ton f good trails, hope to hunt it in the morning!
Good luck!!
good luck fellas, things are heatin up
Anybody see any chasing yet???
AWESOME new property! had a spike feeding right in front of me at 6 yards for 20 minutes or so with 2 big does just out of range. only draw back to the new piece is the land owner (150 acres) is a trophy hunter and asked me to please pass on anything under a 6 point but told me to punch my doe tags if i can!
Hey Ken, thats great. At least you can fill a freezer. One of my property owners in the Catskills, says NO DOES!!!!! :knothead: but hey, he makes the rules!!
I banned myself from shooting Does 6 years ago. Coyotes where taking a toll. I went hunting for an hour after work. When I got home, three Does were in my field. This is the second year with no coyote around. Another year or two and their numbers should come back.Males won't come around or stay around very long without the ladies! I'm hunting for a Doe right now. But not on my land.
That's great Ken, go get em brother!
I had a little forkhorn chase a doe past me tonight in the Batavia area.Yesterday afternoon my wife and I were driving up Rt98 near Barre and saw a small buck hounding a doe.
Saw a small buck tonight ,came by me but too far then proceeded to eat acorns for the last hour of light out in front of me ,again too far.
I saw three bucks and a doe last night. The only one that presented a shot was a 2.5 year old 8 point at 13 yards. My arrow deflected off an unseen branch and was sent harmlessly downward and stuck in the dirt. He didn't spook much as I watched him feed for another 5 minutes after the missed shot. I hope he comes back tonight. Awesome encounter.
I've had deer in front of me the last two days I hunted but the situations weren't quite right for a shot. On Friday afternoon, 3 does came down the trail but veered off away from me and into some cover that was not conducive to a shot. They stayed relaxed the whole time and just meandered away so they didn't bust me...just bad luck I guess. Yesterday a doe came flying thru like her tail was on fire. Thought for sure she was being chased by the buck who made the scrape line I've been hunting...but no such luck. Will give it another try on Friday. Good luck to all
Wow, was it snappy this morning. 22 degrees when I left the house at 5:15. At 8 am I had 2 does cruise by out of range. Squirrels were having a party all around me, but not much else going on.
heading out at 2:30 till dark in the new stand.
Was in my stand nice and early this morning. Beautiful morning, the kind I love, a little grey. I'm still trying to figure these woods out since "Sandy" changed them a bit. I kicked a few out in the dark on my walk in. I didn't see anything on stand. Ion the way out, I found a bunch of very Large scrapes. They are in the middle of some blow downs. I may have to ground it out there on Thursday!
Thanks for the well wishes. I will see my Jessie again. She was a great girl. This is the first time I have been on since posting. Have not been out with the bow yet. I have hunted a little at my property in the northern zone with a gun. My one brother doesn't bow hunt so I've hunted with him. Hoping to get back at it next week. Good luck out there everyone.
Sounds like a nice place Ken . Best of luck.
AWESOME hunt tonight. got busted drawing on a doe from another doe that was directly behind my tree! didin't think she could see me and i'm pretty sure she didn't but she did see my bow swing around! let a HUGE body 4 point walk directly underneath my stand, mouth open and definitely looking for love. i hunted with the land owner tonight and he has now told me feel free to take whatever i feel like. this place is awesome and i will definitely get a shot soon!
Glad your having some great action Ken. Best of luck.
it was one of the nights that just really lights the firs ya know! man i am having a ball and i can walk to this spot from my house! been here 6 years and this is the first year he finally said YES i can hunt there. thats 2 days in a row i have had a deer in bow range and just could not drop the string, its coming though.......
Sounds like a nice place, Ken... Enjoy it! Good to hear the land owner gave you a free hand... Means he trusts and admires you buddy! Just hang in there and let it happen.

Went out over the weekend at a county park on Long Island. Saturday morning 35 deg and nice..had 4 doe come by with no shot then a lone doe that presented a shot and a miss over her back at 15yds oh well..later around 9:30 a crasing through the woods and here she comes with a decent 8pt in tow. no shot but it was exciting!! Heading to Stueben County this weekend to hunt with some old buddies in Prattsburgh can't wait!! good luck to all!!
LI, you'll be only about 25 miles from me. Prattsburg is a good area. Best of luck and have fun.
Crotch horn sorry to hear of your loss. I went through the same thing last spring there is not a day that goes by that I don't think of my dog and how much I still miss him.
Checking traps then hitting the stand.
Saw some chasing yesterday AM-- it was pretty frosty out there! Expected some action last night in a new stand--the first truly clear evening with light winds that I have been able to get out. 4PM neighbor started the chainsaw and that, as it turns out, was the end of my peaceful and hopeful evening hunt. Back at it today.....
Snowing here right now and season is closed. Good luck folks.
can't wait to sit all afternoon!!!!!!!!
Go Git'em Brother!!!!!
Stoneknife has a story to tell,I am waiting for more photos patiently !!!!!
The Lord Blesses me beyond what I deserve. I had been waiting what seems like forever to hunt the stand I shot him from, while hunting other stands the sign kept showing up. Today the wind was perfect so I was able to set the stand I call the horse trail stand, on the way in I put out a little doe urine that I'm sure he smelled because he tried to circle but as soon as the shot presented itself I took it. I had pics of him on a trail cam this is the fist year I ever had one of those, it was fun watching what was out there all summer and fall. Shot him with my Bob Lee hunter 46# @28, Big Jim GT blem, old Bear razor head file sharp, SBD string. He weighs #175 pounds dressed on my deer scale, 8 point one side is weak so the pics show the good side :bigsmyl:

BEAUTY!!!! congratulations Jim, having a heck of a season!!
Good one Jim........
Way to go Jim! You are a deer killing machine. I've been out a few times and have been passing up quite a few in hopes that my son would get a shot. It came together last night. He shot a nice young doe that will be fantastic eating. Shot was a bit far back, but angling into the vitals. It didn't go 75 yards. Pictures to follow.
Congratulations Terry. I had passed up a couple bucks for that same reason, Joe is done so I had the opportunity at this one so I took it. It's so much nicer to see the kids get theirs first.
Jim I would call any trail that deer walked down the horse trail ! He is a great buck and it looks like a great shot . As soon as I got home Amanda had to saw me on Facebook. Congrats
Congrats Jim that a heck of a buck!!!! Well deserved, good things for good people!! Congrats Joe
Beautiful buck Jim.congratulations
way to go Jim!!!! i definitely picked the wrong night to sit in the new stand. got i in at 1:45 and the farmer was driving the combine in the field next to me, couldn't hear a thing! got out of the stand at 5:45 farmer was STILL in the combine, still could not hear a thing, that was a LOOOOONG time to sit and listen to that thing!
CONGEATULATIONS, JIM!!!!!!!!!! :clapper:
He's a BEAUTIFUL Buck!!!!! He couldn't have gone to a more dedicated & deserveing Hunter!!!!!
AWESOME JOB, Brother!!!!!!!!!!
Tyler's deer. Nice young doe that will be some amazingly good eating.

How about that Tyler!!!! Congrats little brother, you're a chip off the ol' block!!
Again nice big buck Jim,thanks for the story as well.
My daughter carved this pumpkin tonight (//%5Burl=http://smg.photobucket.com/user/1966kodiak/media/d849a595-7c72-440c-a3ea-d690617d2d8a.jpg.html%5D%20%20%5Bimg%5Dhttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v298/1966kodiak/d849a595-7c72-440c-a3ea-d690617d2d8a.jpg) [/IMG] Tommorrow after the trick or treaters are gone I'm in the woods for four solid days going to feel good.
Congrats Tyler & Jim!!! Both great deer. Ken you will drop the string soon. I can feel it for you brother. You will score. It is your time.
Just a warning guys..... Ticks have been bad this year. Found one on me day and a half after my last hunt up north. Be careful.
Bob, your daughter has talent. Very nice.
Shick
Bob, that is cool, Amanda has talent :clapper:
Wow Jim beautiful Buck!!! That's awesome :bigsmyl:
was just getting light this morning and...... the farmer fired up the combine AGAIN by my stand. i know it does not affect the deer but i can't stand it, got down early to go have coffee with my mother.
Way to go Jim and Tyler!!
Im switching hours at work Sunday, from then on I should be able to hunt some afternoons.
Oh....and Im heading to Westchester soon. :jumper:
Hey Brother!!! Sleep in... Make & Eat Breakfast... Slowly wander in to your stand about 9-10am. Get yourself sitiated.....
Then have a nice quiet mid-day sit, while he's having lunch!!!!!
Woodchucker don't "do" early!!! lmao
Hey Jamie! Keep me informed about Westchester... My left arm ain't gonna fall off after all! :dunno:
Ken My Buddy... Remember the scene in Kellys' Heros when someone says: " So long as them Tigers are running their engines, we can sneek down to the edge of town and they won't hear us!"
Well? How's about some still hunting? Gotta be more then one way to skin a cat.
... mike ...
Oh yea... Forgot to add: I have yet to kill a deer with trad gear stalking and still hunting... Just sayin'.
Was a warm and gloomy morning.Nothing moving this morning where I hunted. This warm spell shut down movement.hope we get another cold snap and things will happen.
Great jobs Jim and Tyler! Congratulations! :archer:
We're having 45 mph winds at the moment so I guess I won't try and sneak out early tonight.
Got out for a few hours Tuesday and didn't see anything but squirrels.
Anybody get out today.......I'll give it a go tomorrow.
Hey Ron,
My son and I spent the day in our pine trees enjoying the rain. Saw the biggest buck I've seen in quite some time. Going to be good and frosty in the morning.
Say hi to the tribes hill gang for me.
Watched a six-point work a sapling, scratch his ear with a hind hoof, nibble away at browse . . . all 20 yards over my right shoulder through the branched of the red maple I have my stand in. No shot but it was great seeing a totally relaxed deer that close. Saw two other antlerless in range bot neither was "the shot".
CHecked the trail camera behind the house and this little fellow had stopped by.

Third deer this year taken with my Rick Welch Dakota recurve. No monster bucks, but all were nice clean kills with short blood trails and a freezer full of venison.

Charlie, looks like thanksgiving dinner is waiting in the woods for you :bigsmyl: Congratulations Rick, nice deer.
Way to hunt them up Rick, congrats
Has anyone heard from Ron P. I haven't seen him on Trad gang in a while and hope that he is doing ok. I sent a prayer for the Fathers intercession.
Did a mid day sit, I was thinking if the chase was on just maybe.......I had a snack and then I saw a deer 50 yards away. I picked up my bow Just in case.....then to my left, another deer. It was a big doe and she's going to be at 15 yards real quick. Just as she is going to give me a shot she turns and walks straight away....no shot. I relaxed and said to myself ....that was close. Then to my right I see the other deer coming back.......
So, as I watch her move toward me I turn on my Pac-Seat and get ready. She turns broadside at about 20 yards and looks the other way. I reach full draw undetected and focus on a dark spot just behind and above her elbow........I release! The arrow is on it's way and I'm thinking it's looking good and .....CRACK......off she goes, stops and looks back and begins to feed. I had center punched a 1" hickory sapling that was right in front of her vitals......Well at least I'm getting close. :dunno: I'll keep at it.
That is Awesome Ron. This is your year
It will happen soon enough.......
... mike ...
Keep at it Ron
Sounds like you had a great hunt Ron.Keep after them,it will happen. Next time you hunt that spot, shoot the buck that will be chasing that doe! That Wesley should get it done for you.Best of luck Ron.
Rick,
That's a beautiful buck for your part of the woods.
Congratulations.
congrats rick
Congrats Rick.
Thanks guys, they are just starting to chase does up here around the Thousand Island region. Good luck to everyone.
Rick
Happy for your success Rick. That is how you get it done!

My Vacation is over back to the real world today :(
Good luck Ken
F-Manny
that fell through as i have to go to a viewing but i have the green light to hunt the am and pm tomorrow in the new spot! put in a decent ground blind today.
Congrats everyone that connected and good luck to everyone now that the weather is cooling down. I have not been out anywhere near enough, and just got my computer repaired!
First post; thank you for accepting me into your community.
Rattled in a nice 7 ptr yesterday (Sunday) at 6:15a.m., 10 yd shot, double lung, went 80 yds and piled up. Deer was butchered and packed in the freezer by 5:00pm (thanks for your time, Dad!).
This buck was on the prowl, nose to the ground, heading towards his scrape only ten yds from where he dropped.
Get out there; it's prime time now. I hunt northern Dutchess Cty.
PS: If anyone can tell me how to post a pic via my iPhone, I will do so.
not sure how to post from your phone but if you email me the pic i will post it for you.
Where in N.Dutchess, John???
I have hardly seen any deer I the last couple sits, it is like feast or famine. I am getting a little worried I might not get another chance.
I finally got some meat for the freezer. I made a great hit on a 10 yard doe this afternoon. She ran about 100 yards. I've been seeing bucks every day.
Congratulations Michael.
Congrats Mike, Get yourself a nice buck too!
Congrats to everyone so far.
I have just made it back to NY
..After checking my trail camera which died after 2 days. I realixze I might have a chance here in NY. I hope to get out this saturday and sunday.
Good Luck Ken, sounds like a great spot.
Good Luck Sean and everyone else.
Dont feel bad Ron W. You will soon see I have been struggling with hitting deer too!
Was just reading Charlies' thread about your hunt Charlie. Cool stuff. Must of been an awesome time. Congrats and welcome home. Hope you get a dandy this weekend. You and Ron W.
Going in the AM......hope'n for a good wind!! But I do have options........
Me too. I anticipate being stricken with a mysterious illness come an hour before sunrise that will pass by just after sunset. ;)

I hope you get better soon I have been struggling with the same thing almost every year about this time ;) The Dr. told me that once the freezer is full the symptoms will pass :readit: Good luck guys.
Nice job Mike, the Predator strikes.
Passed up a couple of shot opportunitiues early in the season-- now as always I am wondering why......
Off to "Werk". I hope I have glorious updates upon my return. :readit:
Saw nothing this AM......very strange today, no wind for the first 2 hours,
Spooked one going in a new spot this morning.Sat till 10 o-clock.Moved to another ridge.Had a nice doe 5yrds from me for about 20min.She would not give me a shot.Thats too close, had to close my eyes a couple times.Got a scrape right in front of me 10 yds.She stood there staring at me like forever.Only good thing she didn,t smell me.Still a great hunt.Had turkeys around me around noon time. They finally left and I snuck out. Will be back earlier in the morning tomorrow.
Had my best hunt of the year today. Havent been out since last Monday but today 4 different deer at all different times came past the stand. The only one to offer me a 10 yard shot was a particular spike horn that has been put on reserve at my friends request. Got into the turkeys again too, very close but no shot.
One of the deer, a small, doe bleated several times as she fed on beech and white acorns but no one came to take advantage of her. I heard another deer bleating at about 12 but never saw it.
This week is gonna be awesome.
Really enjoy you guys' thread. You can take a boy out of the upstate but you can't take it out of him.
Sure wish the pumpkin army was still a month away.
wow really expected to see some deer and get a shot today but not to be. saw a yote in the morning and a red fox this evening, fun time any ways.
Been seeing a lot more movement in the past week. I have the next 5 days to hunt. Good luck to all you guys and gals.
all these threads are keeping me fired up! i am sitting in some thick stuff with a few apple trees that are loaded and dropping. in front of me is a cut corn field, behind me is a standing corn field. to me right side is extremely thick brush. there are 2 pounded down trails going right by my stand and blid, its only a matter of time!
Tyler & I went out early this morning. We just had a feeling that "today was the day".....
However, It was not mean't to be. We had a good hunt, saw the normal bunch of squirrels & birds. We called it at noon, and decided to do some scouting on the way out. At one point, Tyler said to me "Dad,LOOK!" Trotting down the hill toward us came a BEAUTIFUL little Red Fox!!! I slipped an arrow from my quiver and nocked it, but he caught my movement and froze..... The arrow was away in a flash, but it missed it's mark, and I heard that old familiar "thunk" that could only be wood,LMAO!!!!! I had buried another old Bear greenie in a dead Ironwood log! I tried to wiggle it out,and pulled the insert out of the broadhead. Then we tried to pry it out with my old Kitredge Keen-Kill..... I only succeeded in bending the crap outa both tools!!!!!
Oh Well, Another greenie gone to Hunting Heaven. I've lost and left so many in the woods over the years.....
I wonder if they'll be waiting when I get there???
Don't lose the zeal Ken. It's important to keep a fresh hunt perspective. You are certainly in a good spot. Keep after em bro, and stay ready it's coming!
John's buck CONGRATS!!!!!!!
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v119/adkmountainken/tradgang/IMG_2689.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/adkmountainken/media/tradgang/IMG_2689.jpg.html)
Thanks, Ken.
Great Buck John!
Good Luck Ken, sounds like a great spot.
Chuck, Great experience! Bet you and Tyler are still stoked!
Nice looking buck John. Congrats.
NICE, John!!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!! :clapper:
Again, thank you all for welcoming me into your community; it is a privilege.
Chuck: I hunt mostly in the town of North East, specifically state land that borders on NY, CT and MA.
If any of you hunt in northern Dutchess County (or the vicinity), please get out there this week, even if it's only a half-hour before sunset or the first hour of daylight; it's prime-time now. Hunt the scrapes and create your own mock scrapes, don't be afraid to tickle the horns and make noise on the grunt tube, and be conscious of the wind.
Good luck to all of you; may your hunts be safe and memorable.
Up around Rudd Pond???
Nice buck John, Ken keep the faith your next.
Chuck - yes, way up on top.
Congrats John, Great buck,nice
Congrats John and Mike way to go
Nice one, John.
Good "seein" day for me but no shots. This AM got out and at about 8:00AM I heard soft footfalls. A big 'ol eight-point was walking very slowly towards me. Ooooooh boy! He stopped frequently and I tried, and tried, and tried to ooze into a position as he would take a step, stop, scope the woods, take a step. He was cautious.
Unfortunately, he was coming up from behind my right elbow - and that side of my red maple stand is well blocked with branches. I couldn't lean out far enough whith the safety harness.
After five or six minutes and as close as 20 yards he finally reversed course and walked off at the same speed. I believe he might have winded me but was smart enough to just quietly go back the way he had come. Kept in the heaviest cover all the way (brushy dogwood, small poplars and hawthorn). By then my legs were shaking from holding a squat position waiting and hoping he'd shift path enough to cross into an open spot. :D I tried a doe bleat after five minutes and one soft grunt - but no further signs.
He was a nice one 180 to 200 lbs dress I'd guess - wide across the hips. A healthy guy. Nice tall symmetrical rack with 8" tines. It's about a five acre tangle he was moving along the edge of that had been a pasture 30 years ago and is now thick, low cover. Usually a bedding area.
After lunch I watched three hens and one bearded turkey feeding on apples off a nearby tree.
Al and all - a great day.
Here's my stand tree. I like to have cover behind - this time it cost me. He was approaching from where my thumb is covering (picture was two years ago with the tuft of hair from a hit).
Saw my first chase tonight ,small buck chasing a doe ,it got my heart racing for those few moments but no shot taken.
nothing this morning.
I went out early & alone this morning.....
I decided to sit in my ladder stand, down by the swamp. I was slowly stillhunting my way down to my stand, and 2 heads popped up, about 30 yards away!!! I'm sure we were all thinking the same thing,at the same time,LMAO!!! (HOLY CRAP!!!!!) I honestly never seen them untill thier heads popped up. It was 2 twin Spikehorns... We all froze, but they were the first to head for cover!!! (I'm sure if they knew I only had 2 doe tags in my pocket, They'd have hung around for a chat!) No matter how hard I try, I can't find a bald head, to save my A$$!!!!!
I finished picking my way down to my stand, and climbed up in. About an hour, I saw a few turkeys on the other side of the swamp. They picked thier way around the edge of the swamp, and past my stand about 40 yards away without giving me a shot. There was 8 of them, all Jakes...
Idk what the problem is, all the women used to LOVE me!!! Now, they avoid me like the plaque!!!!!
did you see if the arrow got out the other side? 2 holes or 1? I think he's probably dead. I think that there's more myth about dear surviving arrows than anything else. a shot to the abdomen or chest is probably fatal 99% of the time, whether from blood loss or infection. A kidney has alot of blood flow ... that would kill you.
Any intestinal juices along the blood trail?
I'd probably give it another try and just circle out from last blood for 200yards .... maybe even start searching thickets just off of the nearby deer trails ... might get lucky. I doubt he's gonna live or is still alive ... just a matter of how far away he is.
Watched a buck chasing a doe at about noon today. I was out back of my work place. I work right on the fringe of Elmira Heights. Deer there all the time. Can't hunt them there, but it's a good situation for keeping a log on the rut activity. The buck chased her around for quite a while. Fun to watch. Nice little 8 point. It's going to be on and off with this warm weather. Hopefully we will get a cold snap or daytime activity will be stymied.
The Lord blessed me with a 5 point this evening. Had 3 does go through just out of range and he was about 20yrds behind them. He stopped at 23 yrds and gave me a nice broadside shot. double lung pass through with a 525 gr arrow with a magnus 1 up front. Went down in sight. Used my Sasquatch longbow 45lbs at 27". Didn't get any pics, it was dark by the time I got him out. very happy!
Congratulations Larry. Woodchucker,I know how you feel. I haven't seen a doe all season. Mostly young bucks. I was out last Sunday morning on your side of the river and had a six pt come within ten feet from the blowdowns I was hiding in. He hung around inside ten yds for over a minute. Plenty of time
CONGRATULATIONS, Larry!!!!!!!!!! :clapper:
Good job Larry. Congrats.
I don't know what happened to my post, though I see LittleBen responding to it. So I'll post it again. Last evening a small 8-point came in around 4:15. Took an 18-yard shot and as I shot he took a long step with the result that the arrow hit him in the area of the kidney. There was some blood around 25 yards from the hit, then nothing (no intestinal fluids either). Also, we haven't been able to find the arrow, which had fluoro green banana fletching. The folks who were helping me track (for 6 hours earlier today) think the arrow is still in the deer and that he would have bedded down within 100 yards if he'd been lethally hit. We checked all the deer trails, and covered the area (and well beyond) very thoroughly. It has been over 30 years since I lost a deer-- I feel sick about it.........
It happens Sue.......I would do a repeat search and think like a deer.......look to the thick stuff and try to pick up some blood or hair. Best of luck!!
Congrats Larry.
Sorry to Hear Sue, best of luck!
Larry congratulations on your buck
Thanks .
I've had 5 small bucks inside the 20yd mark in the last week but can't get a doe for anything.
Tuesday a 8pt dogged a huge doe near my stand for 10 minutes. He offered perfect broadside shots but the doe never ! I watched my wife (stands 80yds apart)trying to get a shot at a forkie working a scrape maybe 18yds from her but she just couldn't get a good angle. He then walked past me. Things are lively out there.Good luck to all.
I just got in from the trapline and The deer are on the move. I need to skin some fur, take a shower and spend the rest of the day out there. I saw 4 bucks on seperate does this morning.
Saw two little guys this morn and got wet. Hoping it will stop soon so I can sit all afternoon.
Damn!!! Double post. Lol
Congrats Larry!
I know how you feel, Susan. I have lost two and it really ruined both seasons. Hopefully he survived.
sitting home happy to be home after my tree stand just broke with me in it! grabbed the top of the climbing sticks just in time, you would think i would learn after reading Charlie Lamb's adventure... :knothead:
Wow Ken I'm thankful you were not hurt.
Did you have your harness on Ken????
no, should i YES...
Hmmm, weren't you just saying yesterday.....
Glad you're Ok, Brother!!!!!!!!!!
:saywhat: What can I say........
i don't learn so good brother even when i read it in print or print it myself.... however it is sahe to say i learned the hard way this time, stand will be down tomorrow!
Ya know... Funny thing is, on the foot platform of my ladder stand, the platform is held in place by 2 pieces of 1/8" X 3/4" flat steel. Looks pretty strong!!!!! However 4, 1/4" X 20 bolts & nuts hold the whole shebang together!!!!! I've seen ALOT of bolts break in my life!!!
I ALWAYS stand on the top rung of the ladder and snap my harness to the tether rope, before stepping up onto the foot platform!!!! Even after I've been sitting awhile, My heart is in my throat every time I stand up to stretch..... :scared:
Old Woodchucker likes it MUCH better with his feet on the ground...
Ken,
Glad you were not Hurt!
Glad for ya Larry, Good going!........Congrats!
I'm glad it was only a close one Ken! Keep after em!
Way to go Larry . congrats
Glad your ok Ken
Glad you're OK Ken. I had a home-made one slip a foot while I was standing in it and the feeling pops the wax out of the 'ol ears. :scared:
Wear that harness!
I didn't get out today but my wife finally connected on mature doe with her recurve. She walked right into a group of bedded deer on her way back to the house after 3hrs on the stand.A small buck stood up and she shot under it but a doe jumped at her shot and made the mistake of standing broadside to her at 16yds.She's been off all week and spending every minute she could in the woods. So glad it paid off for her !
Ken glad you were not hurt. But if you are up in a tree stand and am a big guy over 200 lbs we do not bounce well as young and light bow hunters...that why this fat, bald, 280 lbs, 72 year old fart now sit on the gound. I fell less than 12 feet and broke my right leg in 9 places 20 years ago. The amount of deer I take has gone down by being on the ground, but when you shoot them it is eye ball to eye ball. OPlus if you fall asleep in the chair on the ground, the most you get is being pushed to being wide awake...
keep safe all you tree hunters and ware a safety harness...
Bill
Congratulations Mrs. swampbow2.
I missed again! I still hunted for 5 hours yesterday and saw 15 does and 8 bucks. I had a 17" 10 point chase a doe by me at 20 yards but my arrow missed the mark. a clean miss. I won't be able to try again until Monday. Good luck to all, and be safe.
Congratulations to Mrs. swampbow2 Keep at it Mike
Heading out this morning, with 2 doe tags in my pocket.
Been trying to think of some kinda "cologne" to attract some lady friends.....
Like always, I'll just clean my old ugly butt up, and hope for the best!!!
I have about a dozen or so tree stands that i have acquired over the years. Last year i noticed the cables had rust on them so I called the mfgr. for replacements. Too expensive. So I went to the web and got some 3/16 steel cable, crimps and a crimping tool. Now all the stands that were rated for 300 pounds are 800 pounds safer. Next Spring/Summer I will take some of the tools to the woods and fix up the ladder stands. Laura and I also use life lines like the ones that Summit offer and never ascend/descend without being hooked in. By the way....it was less than $100 for the cable, crimps and crimping tool. Cheap for 12/13 "new" stands.
Larry...nice going. Got some pics we can see? I know I'm from NH but spent most of my childhood in Brooklyn and East Rockaway and started to hunt in Westchester when I was 12. Wish I knew then what I know now.
Congrats to Mrs. swampbow2. Ken, I am glad you were not hurt. That is not something I would ever want to hear. Now wear that harness, Bro!
Double post....sorry.
Marvin,
Congrats goes out to your wife :clapper:
Good Luck Chuck.
I cant get out till tomorrow.
Mike, that must have been intense! Great day it sounds like, minus the miss...
Thanks from the wife for your kind words.I just came in to get a coffee, check my emails, and then get on the tractor to go get a flathead I just shot.I botched the shot at 10yds by not leaning out from the stand and my bottom limb hit it.I missed by several feet with a loud "BONG".Lucky I had a young dummy who went 15yds and stopped to look back ; bad move .I hit perfect 2nd shot and watched him go down in 50yds.Wife saw a nice 8pt pushing three does but she was on the ground and got busted. What a great morning with action aplenty.Go get em !
Congrats to all that have connected!
I use the lifelines too and it is the only way i hunt now out of a treestand. great idea on replacing the cables.
Congrats to you, too, Marvin!
Today was Turkey Day!!!!!
Check out the Traditional Bowhunters of N.Y. Forum!!!
Congrats to you and your wife Marvin
I'm very fortunate to be having so many great hunts this year. I just wish we were hitting better with our first shot.I believe the DEC has it right about how high the deer numbers are in Genesee and Wyoming counties. My wife and I have been into deer just about every time we've been out around Batavia and friends have told me they're seeing up to 25 deer a day in the Alexander area. Our turkeys seem to be down but we got deer. Good luck to all this weekend .
My deer numbers are down here in my part of Steuben county, I have managed to find them about 50% of the time while hunting. Going out this morning to see if a buck will chase a Doe in front of me. I'll be hunting a mile or so behind my house on the Erwin State Forest. Good luck everyone!
Going in the AM early on Sunday......Bow only Zone East of me.......Hope'n to see some movement and maybe some action. The journal I keep tells me I see the most action around Veterans day. I hope it continues.......LOL!
I know someone that shot a nice buck :D I hope he posts it on here :readit:
After spending six of the first nine days of November in the woods with zero rut activity and only seeing 1 1/2 year old bucks this guy came into a scrape that I doctored up with some Smokeys tarsal gland scent last night. He has a broken tine and a hole in his ear so he tangled with somebody. Heart shot and saw him go down. I can't understand the complete lack of rut activity ? Guys an hours drive away have had a rut frenzy going on for over a week. Sorry about the poor picture I didn't know how to use the flash on my phone then the battery died ! Good luck less than a week until the orange army invades and if the rut starts then they are going to kill allot of deer.

Wow,
Congrats Bob!!!!
Activity is hit or miss here also, just like the acorns.
Nice deer Bob.
'Chaser, that is a fine looking deer. No problems with the picture. Congratulations.
Shick
Bob that's a nice looking deer congratulations. I have been seeing a lot of mature bucks on the move while I've been driving , saw a monster along rt.490 near exit 3(Churchville). One more month till surgery all I can look forward to is hunting with a muzzle loader.
Very nice buck, Congratulations Bob.
Rick
3 1/2 hour sit this AM.......Saw a doe and her skipper, at 8:30 I thought I was going to have a shot but the wind was fickle and they just backed out slowly. At 9:00 a real nice 4 pt. got to with in 40 yards but again I think the wind did me in. None were spooked but just sneaked away. The forky was high and wide, nice for a young deer. Lots of squirrels.......
A 1 job 2 all
VERY NICE Buck, Bob!!!!!!!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!! :notworthy:
its on big time here in south eastern NY, killed a nice 8 yesterday. Mike
Awesome deer fellas. Congrats to all. Two more hunts for me before the guns hit the woods. Tomorrow is my lucky day.
Congratulations Bob
nice Bob, looks like he was a fighter
Go get'em Izzy
Nice buck Bob,that is a perfect shot.
Congrats Bob , nice buck
congrats Mike
Nice job, Bob. He looks like an older buck that's been around the block a few times.
I'm seeing plenty of deer . . . at 40 yards.
Congrats on a great buck Bob.
Hay.....nice buck chaser. Congrats
Thanks guys. He was a scraper for sure besides the broken point and tore up ear I found a big hunk of skin skin hanging from over his right eye. Funny thing is there is zero rut action or did I miss it ?
Good luck to everyone and remember you can use your bow in gun season so it's not over. I shot my first trad deer on a Thanksgiving morning during gun season.
When I was younger before wife and kids and the need/want to put more venison in the freezer I only hunted with my trad bow all through gun season as well,I got some real weird looks from guys who were toting guns, that was about a 10 period. But now with 6 people in my family we can eat about 5 adult deer a year.
Did not hunt for most of Oct. very bad shooting. I shot the compound for the 1st time in years I hated it. Shooting this felt strange and my shooting was no better. I kept shooting my recurve until I got some confidence. Hunting about 11 times out since late Oct. I had a few close encounters but no shots. Sunday am 22yd broadside shot no blood for 1st 60 yards. Found deer about 200 yards from stand. I would like to say hi to all my trad friends from Havoc and Mohawk Hudson.
Good job Dan.......
Congrats Dan!
Nice buck and a great shot. I still hunted Saturday thru a property I haven't spent much time on this year and had a good sized 7pt at less than 20yds in open woods. It was fun but no buck tag! Maybe next Saturday my Hawken will get to make some smoke with him.It won't be the same as my bow but I do enjoy using my old cap guns during gun season.I do respect those who stay with their sticks in gun season.
Congratulations Dan, I'm going to head out this afternoon to try for another doe because I need some jerky meat ;)
Didn't see anything this afternoon......
Got a 5pt. just before dark tonight,Gonna try and get him cut up and in the freezer tomorrow and then I'll try for a doe.
Congrats Dan and Jeff
Good shooting Jeff. Congratulations
Congrats fellas!!
Way to go Jeff  Did you have Stickbow man with you ;)
good going guys! got a few days left before they start running scared!

Of course,Jim.Stickbowman is ALWAYS watching over us,don't cha know? :D
Good Job Jeff.
Congrats Dan. You dont know how happy this news makes me. I know it was tough for you to get to the woods this fall wit all your comitments!!!
Well Done!
Nice buck Bob...I hear ya on the activity..I've seen a total of 4 does this season. Just got back a little while ago from an all day hunt and saw nothing but squirrels. The scrapes went cold, no rubs and no scat. It's like they vanished. A late rut maybe but it's really unusual for my area
This morning was my last bow hunt for a while. At 18 degrees I could barely get myself out of my safety harness my fingers were so numb. This was one of the quietest mornings all season. I saw 2 about 300 yards out in a cornfield and then nothing else. Monday was quiet too with only one bb that followed my scent drag all the way to my tree. Also saw 2 beautiful red fox hunting along a stone wall but they never got closer than 50 yards. Its been a fun season.
Did manage to kill this doe yesterday. (http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/IMG_1797.jpg) (http://s122.photobucket.com/user/2crazyboys_photos/media/IMG_1797.jpg.html) :p
way to go Izzy
Izzy that squirrel would look good in a smoker. Last day before the big bang and I have to work :(
Congrats Izzy,
Good luck if you get out to Herkimer!
Yesterday was my last shot at it. I left some boot leather in Letchworth State park and saw some beautiful scenery. I saw 8 does and 3 bucks. Nothing close enough but had fun none the less.
Congrats to all that have connected this year, and good luck to all that continue to "fling the string" during gun season.
I'll be out with a smokepole tomorrow but good luck to those who are sticking to the bow. I had a fun season with far more close buck encounters than any year I can recall. Mostly small bucks but I did see 2 big guys and had one close enough for a shot but no tag. I got to hunt with a little 48# Northwind recurve I bought years ago,I thought it too light and never used, and found out I like it !Got pass thrus on both my deer with a Wensel on one and a Snuffer on the other. My wife filled a doe tag so with three in the freezer I won't fell pressured to get out when the weather is bad. Other than a longer archery season how could it get any better ?
good job NYer :smileystooges:
Noah got his 1st buck now its time to hang up the guns and get a Griffin back in my hands. It seemed like there weren't many gun hunters in the woods this weekend and lots of deer. Late season is looking good. Congrats to all you fellas with deer in the freezer. Great hunt Glen.
Congratulations to Noah! :clapper: :clapper:
Gezz, Iv' gotta catch up here!
CONGRATS to Noah,Dan and Jeff. Way to go guys.
Congrats Noah!!!!
Congratulations to all my fellow New Yorkers!
congrats Noah
Happy for your son Izzy. Best of luck. Plenty of season left
Anybody still out there ......I'm going in the afternoon tomorrow with the bow to see if I can't get it done. Going to be be cold but maybe that will get them moving......Won't see to many sitting on the couch.....lol!
Good Luck Ron.
Let us know how your hunt went, Ron. We have a bunch of snow here and I worked on my kitchen and stayed by the woodstove.
9 degree this morning clear and cold and about 4 inches of snow on the ground. I got the pellet stove going, having a cup of coffee and at 72 year old thinking back to those early years when I would already be getting on the wool togs to go sit with the bow. Now it by the TV and heat when it this cold.
Good luck to anyone out there hunting.
I don't blame you a bit, Bill. I wish we had some fresh snow here were I hunt. I would be out still hunting- too cold to sit. The ground is so crunchy, the deer hear you coming a mile away.Besides, there aren't enough deer here to warrant sitting in this kid of cold. I'm sure there are some deer moving around in this kind of cold, but they won't have to worry about me.
Maybe this afternoon it will warm up enough to take some of the crunch off. I've been gun hunting but I've seen a couple of does in the afternoon by one of my bow only stands (too close to a house) so next week if it gets in the 30 degree range I'll head back out with my bow.
Well it was a cool sit this afternoon. 3 hours and I saw 2 grays looking for acorns. On the walk out I saw 2 or 3 deer moving up a gully away from me and then a doe and 2 skippers at 20 yards on the other side of a hedge row on the neighbors land. The land owner saw a buck and 3 does but no shot. When I left my wife said are you going hunting or ice fishing.......LOL!
:campfire: Anybody hunting?????
Went out this Sunday in 4j and it is still getting hit hard by people. I walked up on one guy and saw another coming in. Kinda a let down i wanted some piece and quiet. Still good to get back in the woods.
I'll be headed for the Adirondacks tomorrow if my truck is repaired. Can't wait to get back up there...
Still at it --
Limited to weekends, but I will be at it till the end. By the time I get home its almost dark.

But I stalked up to shooting range (20 yards) over 15 minutes on a large doe from 50 yards out in a brushlot and, unfortunately, zinged a sapling - burying the arrow in frozen ground and a clean miss. That made my whole season. Been a LONG time since I had made a "successful" stalk on a whitetail.
No venison for me this year. Had too many non-hunting obligations this year. Then I broke my toe feeding the dog, so I'm done for the year.
It's the dog's fault.
Had a nice shot from a ground blind at 18 yards on a 6 point. Put it over top of some goldenrod - and as low as I dared. Without movement, it would have entered the center of his chest. But he crouched and the arrow sailed.
Same spot a week later and a different 6 point. He was on a trail at 9 yards. He heard my arrow draw against my riser, and left dodge.
Congrats to all you guys that put venison in the freezer.
Next year!
The deer are still moving. This nice snow made for a great morning. I saw about 30 this morning.

Nice Job Terry...Big Girl.. There's some good eating..
Congrats Terry. I was happy to hear the news this morning.
I'll be out Wed. Morning. Its been a tough year for me here in NY. Hope something changes.
Nice job Terry. That's a big one for sure. Congrats
Nothing Moving this morning except the squirrels and a few hunters.
Nice Doe Terry, Way to stick it out. Congratulations!!
I haven't been hunting at all. Too many other obligations right now. I hope to be able to get out with the flintlock next Sat. Will be the last day for me if I can get out. Very pour deer numbers for me this year. I hope this trend doesn't continue!
Headed to the woods now. I can hardly contain my excitement.
Congrats Terry!
She looks like a horse!!!
Well done Terry!
10 degrees with a steady east wind blowing between 15-20mph. Perfect weather to hunt a little thick spot by my house where the deer like to bed on days like today. Very similar to the Island of trees, if you've ever been to one of Shawn's hunts.
So I start slipping along, a little faster than I should have been, and come across some tracks that are pretty darn fresh considering that it's been snowing lightly most of the day. 5 feet ahead there is a small opening, if I can get there it will be a good spot to take a good look around, I get about 2 feet and 5-6 deer jump up and move off.
Fortunately when it's cold like this they don't go far if they're not spooked bad. I slow my pace and head in the direction they went. Soon I see them up ahead, about 40 yards out. They bed back down. I decide to hang there until they get back up. 1/2 hour later my hands are burning so bad from the cold ( light cotton glove on bow hand and only shooting glove on drawing hand) I've got to make a decision, now I can only see two of the deer, both bedded, facing away from me. So I work on closing the distance. After a super slow stalk, I'm 25 yards away, but it's way to thick for a shot. Hands are hurting bad now, the deer get up, if they go to my left, they will give me a twenty yard shot through some openings, if they go to the right...they're gone. They slowly start working to my left....come on girls, just ten more yards and I've got a shot! Wait! what's that? wind shift? c'mon, it's been steady all day! You guessed it, they change direction and head to the right, out of the thick stuff and across the road. So close....hands are almost thawed as I type this.
That sounds pretty exciting, Larry! Close! It was pretty cold out there today. I hope to get out tomorrow morning.
Great hunt Larry. Always good to be into deer. Tomorrow morning I am hunting a place that I haven't been to since early season. Fresh snow, gotta go
Great Hunt Larry!
Good Luck Glen
Way to hang in there Larry
Would have been nice for a bit of snow.....not over a foot!!!
Was going out today for an afternoon hunt.....one last try. I looked at the temp......I looked at the wind......I looked at the 12"+ of snow. Then I asked my knees, they said no. So I'm making a pot of chili. My season is over, it's official.
You are a much wiser man the me, Ron. I am heading out in our 30" of snow in a little while. Opps, I just looked out the window...31" and counting!
I can't wait for tomorrow night so I won't keep thinking I have to do this any more LOL!!!
Wiser maybe not, older absolutely......LOL :biglaugh:
Im headed out in the morn with as much hope as 10/01 but if not, lord willing there will be next year. Ive had a great year. You ready for Moose River next September Mr. Purdey? Its on my mind constantly.
Lets get a date on that Moose River thing, I'd like to go, but I'm a schedule guy....
Great minds think alike, Izzy! I was going to contact you soon.
I'll tell ya, the last couple days of deer season I always like to sit in the forest in the snow for a couple hours and reflect on my deer season. The good times as well mulling over the frustrating times, misses and such.
And just about 2 hours ago I was sitting under a hemlock tree in 30 inches of snow thinking about Moose River and our great hunt we had. Short but great. It was the highlight of my fall deer season and I can't wait for next September!!!!! I, too, think about it all the time. In fact at work this morning I made up a calendar and made sure I marked the 27th and wanted to put in for time off already LOL!
Hey, the 27th of September is a Saturday next year, so maybe some more folks will attend. Hear that schedule guy Mr Carr? You are more than welcome to join us!
Dan,
We hunted the best part of 2 days and spent one night in the Moose River Plains area this past fall. We will do it again and hope to spend an additional night or two or three next year. Early bow season is from Sept. 27 through the 30th, using leftover tag(s) from 2013. Keep in touch as we plan this trip.
Im all in. Im probably gonna head in Thursday and hunt til Sunday.
I think the season next year starts on Oct. 1st state wide.......I could be wrong but I think they changed it. There will be no hunting with last years tags. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I just looked in the book that comes with your license and it says Sept. 27 but I think I read some place that it was going to change.....as I said I may be wrong.... :dunno:
Sept 27th Northern & Oct 1st Southern next year.
http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/10002.html
Maybe I read someplace that it was proposed....I hope it stays the Sept.27 th. Thanks Charlie....
The change to Oct. 1 is being talked about by the DEC.
Being a government agency, I wouldn't be surprised if it takes a year or two to move on the new date.
I hope they don't take away that early season, Sept. 27th opener. I guess we could hunt squirrels if they do.
Or bear!
What would be nice.........if Northern bow opened at the same time as early bear. Then you have some time to spend hunting bear and deer at the same time.......that would be excellent!! Of course this is wishful thinking. :dunno:
That would be nice, Ron.
Well the fat lady has sung, it's all over for 2013. Had a pretty slow bow season, but the gun was really good here is the final count.
1 longbow doe
1 .243 buck
2 .45 cal T/C Prohunter deer
1 .45 cal Custom flintlock Penn longrifle
Not a bad take for the year, and am looking forward to chasing bunnies next.
Thats all she wrote. Tag soup. I had a great time following everone elses adventures :clapper:
With a bit of garlic and some onion, tags aren't that bad.......LOL! :biglaugh: I eaten a ton of them!!
I cheated and put one in the freezer with my 11-87. But I sure am re-thinking the does and spike I passed on early in the bow season. :banghead:
Saw a couple nice bucks too far out that I hope made it through to be even nicer bucks next year.
Taking them with a gun ain't cheating in my book.I spent about 10 years only using the trad bow all deer season. But after marriage and 4 hungry and growing kids I don't let too many deer walk anymore. If I could kill them all with the bow I would for sure, but I'm not that good, and have actually grown to enjoy gun hunting.
I shot the first two deer that came in this season then shot a decent buck so I have no regrets. Freezer is full now while I dream about next season and chasing bunnies :readit:
I'm mad at myself after I missed what should have been an easy shot 55yd shot with my .45 Hawken on the last hour of the last day. Must be the gun ! I would like to get out and wing some arrows at bunnies but I'm just not seeing many and may have to settle for squirrels which are everywhere. You WNY fellas seeing many rabbits ? I'm not looking for a place to hunt just wondering if they're in a down cycle.
Muzzleloader hangfire @ 4:15 the last evening of late muzzleloader ended a frustrating season for me. I passed on a number of deer (AGAIN!) early in the season, shot a buck I wasn't able to recover, have a bird dog with a torn Achilles tendon.......better luck next year I hope!
(http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/IMAG0024.jpg) (http://s122.photobucket.com/user/2crazyboys_photos/media/IMAG0024.jpg.html) If you felt like this last night minus the turkey, don't forget, the end of one season begins the next. Time for bunnies and hogs. Hope to kill a pile of yotes this year too.
Good year for me. Killed 3 does and 1 buck with the longbow. Son killed two more with the recurve so we are good to go for meat.
Any JLMBH warmups scheduled?
