Title: Stuff other than the kill
Post by: tradarcher816 on September 26, 2013, 11:29:00 AM
I got off work last night and in bed alittle after 12:00. The alarm went off bright and early at 5:20 and after a quick shower and a poptart I was off to the woods, hoping to chance another encounter with 'ol saber noggin this morning. After making it to my stand and getting tied into my tree, I sat quietly and watched the world around me wake up. The sunrise was heralded by a pair of owls who seemed to converse between tree lines like a pair of old men having coffee at Hardee's early in the morning. After the sun rose and cast a shimmer on everything with what was left of the nights rain, I hit that hour of every morning spent in the stand where the eyelids grow heavy. I was brought back to clarity with the sound of a hawk screeching as he circled the field I was hunting over. I was taking in all I had already seen an dreaming about getting a shot at ol saber noggin,,,,, or a doe. When I heard the sirens of a fire truck speed off in the distance, that was almost odd to me. The last property I hunted was in the middle of town and I heard cars all the time. This land however was far enough in the country I rarely hear a car. So as I pondered how strange it was to be hearing a truck, a pack of coyotes sounded up in the next field over. They howled and yipped as a pack, making a sound I've only heard twice before. I kind of figured that wasn't helping my odds at getting a deer, but it was cool all the same. After a couple more hours passed with no deer movement I made my way out so I can get some rest before work this afternoon. I managed to get some pictures on the way out and thought about how much more a hunt is than just the kill. And how it never ceases to amaze me how God in heaven made all the increadible creatures an scenery I was able to enjoy today.

Hey, sounds like we are in the same situation. I am working evenings. Went this morning also after the rain, thought the deer would really be moving but didn't see any.  Lots of squirrels out though. Where in the upstate you from? I am in Simpsonville.

The world is at it's greatest beauty just as the day is breaking. Maybe God had bow hunters in mind when he created the sunrise.

Just being out there smelling the fresh air, seeing the beautiful trees, flowers, birds, animals, makes for a great day.

We're on the same page tradarcher.  There's so much more to hunting than killing game.  Don't get me wrong I'm out there for that purpose, but I get just as much enjoyment from bird watching, and seeing all the other critters and non-game related events that pop up...

One does not hunt in order to kill
on the contrary, one kills in order to have hunted.

If one were to present the sportsman with the death of the animal as a gift he would refuse it. What he is after is having to win it, to conquer the surly brute through his own effort and skill with all the extras that this carries with it: the immersion in the countryside, the healthfulness of the exercise, the distraction from his job.

--- Jose Ortega Y Gasset

From Meditations on Hunting by José Ortega y Gasset. His classic work was first published in 1972 by Charles Scribner & Sons.
