Title: Ontario DIY Bear
Post by: Ontario Longbow on September 24, 2013, 08:44:00 PM
One of my best friends and longtime hunting partner  Theo shot a bear the other night. We had been watching it for the last two years on trail cameras. After discussing we elected to wait until the following morning to track. Weather was very cool at night and Theo was concerned about shot placement. Based on what he told me I thought heart shot. This is a "Do it yourself " after work and weekends hunt. I picked up barrels cheap and have a friend that gave us all the restaurant scraps we needed. Theo is 5k ( 3 miles ) from his house and my stand is 30k ( 18 miles away ).

Bear only went 70 yards with a perfect heart shot. 660 grain arrow complete pass through and stuck in the ground. Last twenty yards were solid. I was "Lead" tracker and found the bear 15 yards into the swamp. Good thing Theo was backing me up with his Widow recurve. I felt very safe,, LOL. Worst part was getting that bear ( dressed at 252 pounds ) estimated live weight 300 lbs out of the swamp. An hour later we had him out of the swamp and on dry land. Then we used my game cart called the ATV ( All Theo and Vandeputte,, LOL ) to get him to a fire road. Best part was loading him into the trunk of a Honda Civic.
We were both dead tired and smelled of swamp and bear and sweat.
Frank

Theo designed and built all the tooling for the Canadian Journeyman broadhead. Did some work for Eclipse as well. He uses a Eclipse 145 with a 100g steel adaptor, 250 Carbon express Heritage out of a 62" PMAX 51@28.

Congrats on a nice one!  That sucker has some big paws!

That trail is a great testiment to a well placed shot and a very sharp broadhead.  Mudd read my mind when I saw the pics...Stevie Wonder could have followed that trail!

Nice bear is right.
Good tale on all the work and "hunt vehicles".
An earlier thread here talked about loading/using small cars for transport, you guys got'er done with a Civic. Tough to the end...

When I think of bears, I think " up north ".

Wasaga beach is pretty much southern Ontario.
Is the bear population moving south, or did you always have bear in your area?

The Bears are definitely moving south after the cancelation of our Spring bear hunt.

Bears where even south of here 35 years ago and moved North when the population grew. Now they are heading south so they don"t get their butts kicked from the bears up North !
