Title: Insert Weight Question?
Post by: Alexander Traditional on September 24, 2013, 01:45:00 PM
I'm wondering if a 150 grain broadhead with a 65 grain insert weight will affect the spine the same as having all 215 grains out front? Will the difference be minimal or will I just have to rig one up and go out and shoot it? The reason is I have some 150's from a different set up and have found that 215 up front is what is working now and would like to use the 150's,but the weight would be somewhat redistributed.

I think you be fine.  But almost always, the best teacher is experience.

For what it's worth, I've found that the relatively short length of the heavy inserts works the same as a heavy head for me.

A 75gr insert and 125gr field point fly the same as a 200gr field point. I have several arrows set up with insert weights and light field points so that I can replace the field points with a light broadhead in an emergency when I don't have any more of the heavy broadheads. All shoot to the same point of aim out to 20 yds, which is my self-imposed range limit.

Single inserts do not tend to change spine drastically when compared to adding point weight, but did learn a lesson when adding 2 long 100gr HIT inserts to the arrow as the overall added length of the long inserts did stiffen the arrow up considerably more then it should and resulted in some unusable arrow shafts.

Mark I think you hit on what I was asking, are you saying that it actually stiffened the arrow? I am somewhat confused. I didn't think it would stiffen it,but I thought it might not weaken as much as having the weight out front?
