I started shooting Traditional last September however I did not really hunt traditional last season due to lack of confidence and not wanting to wound an animal. I ended up using the wheel bow last season and wanted to dedicate my self to trad this season. Well this spring and summer I shot nothing but traditional...stump shooting, 3ds, field archery. You name it, I wanted to shoot it!
Missouri archery opened Sept. 15th and yesterday morning all my practice paid off.
A friend of mine who is also a trad shooter noticed friday evening that the deer were hammering acorns. Saturday morning he advised we do the "keep it simple stupid" and hunt from the ground near these big white oaks. We got in early and set up. I was sitting on a small stool about 30 or so yards from a creek bottom half way up a ridge. There were several good trails going across the up the ridge near where I was sitting. At about 640 a lone doe worked in to 18 yards and busted me drawing and skirted out of there towards the thick stuff. Then at 720 a young doe fawn came in by herself up hill behind me and let me turn. I drew my bow while she was slowly walking behind a big oak and as soon as I saw her crease in her shoulder come out from behind the tree I was going to zero in and shoot.
At 13 yards by arrow zipped in through her shoulder and exited out behind in opposite shoulder. She ran 40 yards and I lost site of her but heard a small crash
The Zipper SXT and 175gr Woodsman head did a number on her. 1st shot at a whitetail with my longbow was a success and I am even more obsessed with trad hunting now! I didnt know that was possible :biglaugh:

My favorite threads are these first deer threads, congrats !!
celebration time...now you are a part of a world that is really pretty small considering the size of the whole deal...
glad you whacked a doe...its something that is important to the herd...and quite frankly they are pretty good to eat too...
you have time to get another before the rut kicks in for sure...then maybe be a bit more selective...
all the best...t
