Title: early season &misquitos,bugs help?
Post by: mike p on September 07, 2007, 05:30:00 AM
How do you keep the bugs off. I live in central wis hunting starts next weekend and we are getting a hatch of mosquitos that can give blood transfusion in less that 5 min. how do you protect your self? I was thinking of trying a thermalcell?

Thermacell works! We all tried it at bear camp this year and all agreed-it works! I can't imagine it would spook the deer and not the bears but who knows? Anyone?

Mike, if your skeeters are anything like they around down here by me it would be suicide to go in the woods without a Thermacell.  Even with a good bug suit on the buzzing in your ears would drive you insane.  I don't think I've ever seen them this bad other than maybe in Canada.  The Thermacells DO work!

Amen!  :notworthy:
You can use it for any outdoor activity.  I'll use the thermacell to keep the skeeters at bay anywhere I take my 10 mo daughter, I don't like to spray her down with OFF.

I've been using them for 5 years now and would not go into the woods without one - unless they stop making the refill kits. I use it when working outside at home also. Best bang for the buck I have ever found - in any field of products.

The Thermacaell is awesome.  And I know the little sleeve/holster thing they make looks like an unnecessary gadget, but that thing works real nice for keeping additional butane cartridge and repellent mats with the main unit, and also could be used to secure it to your tree stand (otherwise easy to accidently kick it off).  As someone above said, best money I've spent recently was on the Thermacell.  Works great at outdoor concert, picnic, fishing, etc. too.

Heck, I just lettum bite me.  I was told that they need blood to reproduce, so I figure I will help the little buggers out.  My thought is that if we get enough skeeters around here, it will chase all you folks from IL and MN outta here.   ;)    Just kidding   :smileystooges:

I use a Therma Cell and Max Deet or No Stinking Bugs.  I also spray my clothes (or use the soaking version) with Duranon.

The Thermacell works great when sitting still, but it's pretty worthless when stalking.

The No Stinking Bugs is from Scent sheild and is 25% Deet mixed with a cover scent.  Max Deet is straight Deet and I use it when the bugs are REALLY bad.  It smells funny, but I am not sure the scent really worries deer.  I use these when I know I am going to be moving.

The Duranon is oderless and sprayed on your clothes (never on your person) and not only repels ticks, skeeters and chiggers, but also kills them.  Since using it I have NEVER had a tick on me.

A note on the Therma Cell.  In a post or two above the little carrier for the unit was mentioned.  I think this is invaluable.  Not only does it let you carry extra fuel and repellant, but you can strap the unit to your stand or blind and keep it in the upright position.  This is important as my experience has been that when you lay it down, it burns fuel faster.  Maybe it's just my imagination, but I don't think so.

They work so well for me, I bought two--because I can't imagine being without one.
I just wish they'd sell the blue wafers seperately.

Where does everyone buy their Thermacells ? Where is the cheapest place you think ? Also when you buy refills which one do you buy ? The mats only or the package that has butane and mats together or vice versa ?

NoCams, I got mine at Walmart, $22.00. Refil packs with one butane cartridge and three scent mats for $6.00. They also sell them on that auction site. Do a search on this site for thermacell and you'll get a lot of threads on it. I believe someone said you can also use the butane from women's curling irons or something like that. It's probably cheaper too, since stuff in Sporting Goods are usually more expensive.

Some our sporting goods stores have Thermacells for about $20.  Single refills (1 canister + 3 pads) for about 5 bucks.  Some places sell multpacks for cheaper.

As dry as it has been in Georgia, opening morning was amazing.  I actually saw more deer than mosquitos.  Saw and killed one mosquito, saw 7 deer and was about a tenth of a second away from my anchor on a coyote.  No blood today, but a wonderful opener.

I treat my clothes with Permanone and use my Thermacell.  No ticks, chiggers, or skeeters.  The Thermacell is the best thing to come along in a long time.

Bought me a Thermacell today, I am sure it will work as advertised. All my buds have used them for several years, I was just a little slow to convert..... I used to wear gloves and a headnet and worked pretty good. Only bad thing was they would get around the eye holes and still buzz around your ears even with the headnet. Looking forward to no headnet and no buzzing !
