Title: best "you stuff it" target?
Post by: johnnyk71 on September 19, 2013, 10:45:00 AM
i have the guts of a target i cut open to retrieve a brass insert that pulled out. it's mostly strips of foam sheeting. i was wondering which is the best of the "you stuff it" type bag targets that you guys have used. mostly for field points, but maybe and occasional broadhead if the mood strikes.

thanks!

For field and target points, soy bean seed crates stuffed with silage plastic. They are made of higher quality mesh than anything I have seen, they are large and if you know a farmer with a silage pile and a seed dealer, they are free.

Feed bag, (dog, horse, goat or what ever) stuffed with plastic shopping bags. Stuff it, close it with duct tape and put it where ever you want it. Cheap, lite and easy to make. Repair with duct tape and draw what ever critter you want on it.

I've shot at this type of target and one suggestion I would offer is use scrap pieces of carpet to nail to the front of the target.  The carpet adsorbs most of the energy from the arrow at impact.

The carpet can be replaced periodically when the face gets shot out.  You can go dumpster diving at construction sites and find big enough scrap pieces of carpet to do the job.

thanks to all you guys for the suggestions. I went with irishhacker's suggestion, since I already have an awesome backstop that I built, and like the idea of being able to hang the target in front of it by the grommets. I also have a good pile of "guts" ready to stuff it with.

got my target cover from Third Hand Archery today. pretty solid construction, and looks like it will last pretty well. just the right size to recycle my old target guts. I was a little disappointed that it came with the folded over and sewn corners rather than the metal grommets, but to be fair, they did show it both ways on the website. I guess I should have asked. probably a money-saving effort.

There is a guy who sell's the Bracken Carbom Monster replacement bags on the big auction. $ 7.78 for two of them including shipping. I buy a couple every year, stuff them, sew them up knock in some gormmets and away I go.

I went to tractor supply and bought a jute bag.
Stuffed it with Walmart bags.
Closed it with zip ties
Drew a leg and belly, and its actually about the right size (of the deer I shoot)
Irs cheap and not pretty, but it works pretty well.
I shoot a Martin Savannah at 50LBs with 2018's.
Every now and then if you get high or low it may pass thru. But most times you get little penetration.

I don't know if they are the best, but have to rank right up there with the cheapest. I use empty vinal dog food sacks & empty gunny sacks. I can buy the gunny sacks for about $2 here & a local feed store gives me almost all the plastic wrap I want. I stuff them myself. I'm using one now made out of a Cat litter sack in the hobby room for bad weather shooting.
A little imiganation, some spray paint, & bingo you have about any animal target you want.

A little off topic, but thought I'd post it anyways. My dad and I used to have an old burlap bag target we made into a tic tac toe game. Four pieces of duct tape to make the squares and you get hours of fun and friendly competition..... plus it's good practice!

Thirdhand archery targets are great.  Fill them with old clothes, sheets, comforters, etc.  Just make sure you remove any buttons and zippers.  They sell target skins that you can use with a homemade wood frame target.  Works great!
