Finally got to take my longbow to the swamp today. I was sitting in the palmettos and just before dark I had a doe walk to within 30 yards. Unfortunately I wasn't ready, and by the time I was she had walked behind some trees. In order to make a shot at her with her current heading I had to stand up. Unfortunately I didn't see or hear the doe that was 20 yards to my right, however she definitely saw me. Needless to say I wasn't getting another chance at either one of them today but theres always tomorrow. All in all it was a good day and my first trad/ground hunt on public land turned out pretty well for me.
I think I can safely say it has happened to every bowhunter here. I would still say it was a successful hunt!
It's always the ones you don't see that'll get ya.
Good luck next hunt!

Yep been there. Best part is you get to do it again! If you are into critters you are doing it right. Great Job.
I just love that. Your heart is beating :banghead: Don't you just love it!!!! :biglaugh:
That's why they call it "hunting", instead of killing.......lol
Hope to get out there with you soon Todd. Any close range action on deer is a success in my book. Soon my friend, soon.
Great story and a good lesson learned. :clapper:
Dont feel like the Lone Ranger. Probably wont be the last time either. Just part of it.
I started to draw on a buck last year and at about half draw he looks right past me at a very nice buck that was standing about 8 yards to my right. They don't teach what to do in those situations in school. :D
Needless to say neither rode home with me.
Not alone. Happens every year
Still fun though
Got to love the rush!
I had that happen with a 160+ 12pt. Does walked silently down the road behind me and saved his life. It will happen to me again I am sure. Keep at it and your get one, sounds like you know where to go.
Just like Raptors, its the ones you dont see that get you, LOL. Been there many times.
You'll get 'er next time.
Those girls always seem to travel in pairs.
I too was on the ground last weekend and had a pair of does feed by me. The doe that was off 20 yards from me spotted and stared at something "off" in the weeds I was in, so I couldn't move. While the other doe fed only 10 yards from me, completely oblivious.
Sounds like a great hunt. I would not trade those days for anything (been there and had that done to me!)
I wish I could say that I have never experienced this before, but unfortunately I have.
Good luck next time:)
It's happened to all of us,but oh how it gets the old heart thumpin. :banghead:
I know the feeling. Keep at it you'll get another chance.
More than I care to admit . :o
Tomorrow is a new morning...we shall see
Sometimes you need eyes in the back of your head. Some of my best hunts have been ones where I walked away with nothing but lessons and memories
And you think 2 eyes are tough to beat! 4,6,8 while 30 yards from the ground! And then you have 1-4 noses also!
