What do you wear when hunting from the ground?Ghillie suit?Plaid or commercial camo?
Yes to all of them, each in their own time and place.
ChuckC
What Chuck said. Depends on the temps mostly for me. Wool Plaid is my favorite!!!
I wear a ghillie suit until theres snow on the ground, then its snow camo.
Leafy suit treated with permethrine til it frosts then plaids and even solid colors.
Rob
Homemade ghillie poncho with camo underneath. ASAT wool top and LL Bean wool pants. I like to mix up my camo patterns top and bottom.
anything that i have got to keep me warm if cold outside
camo, different paturns and shades to match area.
even my ghillie, never plad, from trees I have worn jeans though
Plaids and wool work good for me.
Denny
Mine's a conglomerate of camo. ACU Digital, BDU woodland and Real Tree shirt. Most of mine is thanks to the military. Winter, I wear some wool when it's really cold.
I like to hunt from the ground whitetail here in northeast Mexico. Depends on the foliage and how things are around me, but I like to use the Marc Anthony guillie suit with the carbon synergy applied to it, especially when I know the deer can pass very close to me. I have had the closest encounters with it, even deer bedded less than 10 yrds from me.
I had great sucess with the guillie in a Kansas hunt last november also.
I normally incorporate Leafy Wear into hunting clothes no matter the temperature. It works great in any situation that I've ever had.
A mix of everything and the Ghilie I got from you Tim.
Camo clothes mostly.
Camo and plaid, sometimes together.
Loin cloth. :bigsmyl:
But really the lightest weight stuff I can find. Some camo some not. When it gets cold I wear wool that has some form of pattern
Glad I saw this. This year will be my first time hunting on the ground with archery equipment so this will help give me some ideas. Right now I'm leaning toward the loin cloth due to the heat in Louisiana in October.
Commercial Camo!
When i hunt from the ground i try to make a quick makeshift blind with natural materials. sometimes its nothing more than climbing into a deadfall.
But when i do hunt on the ground i like to use syntheic leaves. you can buy a bag of green or fall colored leaves for cheap form most craft shops and just use a safety pin to stick one on each shoulder, a couple on the arms and a couple on my hat. Its a poormans way of doing it but works really good. Its a great method when you have to improvise and hunt on the ground when you didint plan to. Killed a doe in Illinois a few yars ago with this method. Was in a stand and watched a group of does use a trail 70 yards away, then half hour later a 6 point used same trail. i climbed down from my stand, attahced a few leaves to my clothes and hunkered down next to an oak with some shorter oak scrub infront for cover. 15 mintues later shot a lone doe heading in for a midday nap.
Woodland BDU's here in FL when it cools off. When archery opens it is still hot as you know what so I wear a leaf suit I made out of some mesh netting for air flow
I think you can wear about anything you want if you sit still and control your scent. Personally I think most of the new camo is too dark without enough contrast.
Mixed camo. The less I move, the better any of it seems to work.
Olive drab cargo pants and gray or dark t-shirts. A dark wool sweater when it is cold. It does not get that cold here in Texas.

I mostly use a leafy type mesh jacket over, well, anything from a long sleeve wool sweater, to a dark cotton T-shirt, depending on the weather. While not as good as a full blown ghillie, it does a pretty good job of hiding me. I never could get the hang of shooting with a ghillie on. Something was always snagging on briars or getting in the way of my bowstring. Plus, they are hot as the dickens.
For pants, I just use cargo pants. I have some that are camo, but my favorites are Duluth Trading military style.
My wife has made me a believer in the Bush In A Bag, so I will be using it this year more. Problem I always have is that I shoot about as many deer just spooking around with no stool and no camo, makes it hard to want to pack all of that stuff sometimes.
ASAT blends with brown carpet the best...or even Predator Brown. I also use Desert Camo wool sweater.

shadows, shadows, shadows
Most important thing IMO
The weather dictates my clothes, not the camo culture.
Commercial camo and wool plaid mostly.
Plaid
a little mix of plaid and commercial camo, but I gravitate towards old school camo patterns from the early-mid 90's reminds me of hunting when I was a pup
"when I fire a warning shot at them." LOL
I like wool plaids if its cool enough, Military woodland camo pants if warm and they last for ever washed in cold water.
And late last year I bought a QuakerBoy Outline Buster, I can use it once set up, its kind of like a leaf suit that your arms slip through. That way I can still sneek through the brush and green briars. Ghillie suit and leaf camo snags to much for me.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gonna be a mix of Asat, Kuiu, Multi-Cam and Asbell plaid.
I may look into making a ghillie in the off season
I wear "jeans" almost 365 days a year. I have a few pair of camo jeans that I usualy wear hunting. They take a hell of a beating, and are easily washed. (my hunting pants usualy get NASTY!!!) They also help keep me from wearing my "good" jeans in the woods!
Up top, I have a bunch of old wool sweaters, shirts & jackets that I wear. They're all "earth toned" colors, and blend in well.
I usualy have no problem getting close to deer.
I wear anything that has a contrast that will break me up. I will be hunting this year with the ASAT leafy jacket and camo pants.
Plaid shirts from Goodwill/Salvation Army thrift stores. With so many shirts there you will find whatever color combination you might need at $ 3.50 per shirt. Pants some are homemade by RIT dye on old jeans, but I have one greyish/green camo pants from Walmart with a lot of pockets. None of my camo is Realtree or Mossy Oak because I see 14 year old girls wearing it who don't even hunt. I'm too old to make a fashion statement. Older style Army woodland BDU's are too dark and become a solid blob. However if you can find a faded set (the ones you weren't allowed to wear on duty once the colors lightened up too far) they're okay. Ironically The Army made you get new BDU's right when the faded ones camoflaged you the best.
