Good day today for sure. After a busy Morning I hung out around the house and cooked some fresh backstraps...then a nap that I woke up from too late. So I grabbed my stuff and went hunting close to the house.
I went out the door at 5:45 and it had to be at least 90 degrees. Felt like it anyway. The place I was gonna hunt is 28 acres of honey hole I have permission to hunt that is in between two tracts of timber company land and on one end has a small cotton field.
Long story short on the short drive over there it came a good rain for maybe 20 minutes, cooled things down some and covered my walk in on the oak leaves on this ridge.
I climbed in a loc-on I had already hung a few weeks ago using bolts and a woodpecker drill. Set my camera up and hung my bow on a limb. I was expecting the deer to move maybe right at dark. The wind was swirling so I sprayed some deer scent every now and then and it had a bearing on this hunt.
3 big does and 4 fawns came easing up. The wind was blowing almost straight to them just a little to the left of them. When they got near killing close the second doe smelled where the scent had landed on a bush because I was spraying regular with nothing to lose because they were going to smell me anyway with the wind like it was.She walked towards the bush nose in the air then hit total relax mode. All the deer were standing still like they were waiting on her to say it was ok. When she started moving again in a calm way the first deer got sideways at 15 yards and I locked in on my spot and shot. Hitting forward a touch but still a very good shot. She ran maybe 125 yards .
The first deer I ever shot with a grizzly head. I was impressed. First I can get it scapel sharp and second it did have a bit of a twist to it making more than just a slit and the broadhead came out the other side and through the off leg. The feathered end broke off the PINK arrow.
I got both of this years deer hunt shots on film as well so I`m very tickled with the first two deer hunts of 2013.
Mr. Warren has a great video about using the woodpecker drill and bolts. One thing I do is put a piece of reflective tape on mine for when I`m climbing up or down in the dark using my headlamp and if I`m in a place like this where I leave the stand I can spot the bolts with my light in the dark. I sometimes pull the first few bolts to help turn away a fella that could want to "borrow" my stand.

Told you before, you have a natural way of telling a story everybody likes. Hope you're keeping copies for a book? No kidding.
Awesome RC. I'll be seeing Mr. Warren in a month and I expect that we'll be drilling a few trees. I have just the spot for him to find a feed tree or two dropping.
BTW, reflective tape on the bolts is a great idea.
