Title: Mystery Bow?
Post by: HOWITZER on September 13, 2013, 08:33:00 AM

Does anyone recognize the maker of this bow?  It has zero markings on it.  It's in pretty good shape except for all the small holes drilled in it for sights and what not.  The grip feels very familiar to me but I just can't put my finger on the maker.  Any suggestions or guesses?

Not a clue....but I am curious as to how you ended up owning a bow that you don't know.

It just smells like there's a story here and I'd love to hear it.

Thanks for sharing! (and pimping my curiosity)...lol

God bless,Mudd

It's really not that exciting, it's more or less how I end up with most of my bows.  A friend of a friend knows somebody who has these "old" looking bows and doesn't know what to do with them.  So I say are they wood, and they say yes so I say I'll take a look at them and it usually turns out to be some older beat up long bow or target bow, but not this time!  He actually had two both bows were owned by his father, one was a big horn in great shape and the other was this one.  He did know that his father once told him it was a famous bow maker that sent him the bow 99% finished and he just put the satin clear coat on it, so I think what happend is the bower didn't want to put his name on it because it wasn't completed by him!  So I thought I would throw it out to the tradgang brother hood and see if we can come to a possible conclusion of the maker.

That grip looks just like the grip on my Damon Howatt...

It does have a Howatt sort of look to it, but i don't think it is one.  That is a bear stabilizer though.

The grip and the shelf look a lot like my howatt hunter.

A Howatt maybe ? It looks kinda like an old Schaefer to me. I saw where someone mentioned the original Shaefs were similar to a Shakespeare Necedah. Im not too familiar with them but its a good place to start looking. By the way, good luck with those moose tags.

The cut-out under the shelf looks Shakespeare the top half of the riser looks Shakespeare but the finer points on the bottom of the riser do look Howatt if the tip overlays don't look like wood I'd be suspicious of it being a Howatt and I wouldn't have any idea of the maker if it is a higher end custom.
